On the difference between a 12 inch fretboard radius and a 14 inch radius: I have two guitars that say there isn't much. Many years ago, I fell in love with two guitars on the same day and eventually I wound up with both. They were and remain two of the best playing guitars I have. I'm talking about them because they both have 14 inch fretboard radii AND TOM-style bridges. Every bridge of that type I've encountered has been 12 inches in fretboard radius, and I can confirm that spec in one guitar, having replaced its bridge. The feel changed not at all. The fact that more than one maker considered it worthwhile to pair a 14 inch fretboard with a 12 inch bridge says much to me. The fact that I found and find them both keepers says the rest!

One looks like a solid body version of a Gibson ES-335; it's a Hamer Sunburst Archtop XT. The other is very different and much better looking. This one is a 2003 Schecter C-1 Elite with a quilted, transparent amber top. It's my most beautiful guitar! Let me know, though, if you really do want the photos of my actual axes!👍

It was everything you said it was worth every dollar it has the stainless steel fret so I hope it’s from the upgraded batch. it looks like the orange new color I received it in Jan.-Feb.2024. How can you tell the production date in the serial number?

If it’s the “darker” color with the Stainless frets, and you got it in Jan/Feb 2024 time frame, then it’s probably from the 2nd batch. Look at the Serial Number on the back of the headstock. The 1st two numbers are the Manufacturing Plant code the next two digits are the Year, next two Month of manufacture. Hope that helps…truly appreciate your stopping into the channel! Much thanks…🎸👍

Hi Rob…I run a separate cab as it gives the speaker more air to move and the cab has a Celestion Vintage 30 12” speaker in it vs the 12” 70/80 Celestion that is in the amp. A bit more coverage and sound for the studio…thanks so much for watching and stopping into the channel! 🎸👍

WOW… Just wow!!!! Odin REALLY loved that box for some reason-and boy was he DETERMINED to prove you wrong about wanting to go into it! 😂 Definitely one of the best models Firefly has done, and clearly one of the most popular-it certainly has had some of the most runs, and they always seem to sell out. Apart from the SS frets though, it looks like there’s virtually nothing different enough with this new run to make it worth preferring one over the other. I kind of wish they’d sent you one of those new Gretsch-like “Chicken” models-those ones look unique, and it would be interesting to see if those Filtertron-style pickups and Bigsby-type trem system sound as unique as they look. 😂

Odin was just determined to enjoy NGD regardless of the type of box…😎 I was just glad to see FF actually do some upgrades to even this model, which was pretty darn good in its initial release. For those that don’t already have one, this is still a great bargain! They have kept the price the same, along with adding the Alnico 5 pups and the stainless/ball end frets. Pretty cool…hopefully those who were waiting to grab one will now get the chance!! We will see about the “Chicken” model for the future…🎸👍

Jimmy I just love your reviews… I bought one of the first batch MadCat guitars and absolutely loved it!! When I saw Firefly had dropped another batch I thought How could they improve on something so already great? Well I think they did overall but the first batch still was right up there with it still so I felt like if I bought one of these new ones I would just be duplicating a guitar in my collection. Well Jimmy they solved this problem for me by coming out with the Purple Madcat guitar. I bought one and love it just as much as the first one I got. I have this version. It arrived with a slight back bow. Good thing the truss rod works. I also lightly buffed the frets with 1000 grit sponge block because they seemed a little sticky or gritty as if there was some poly overspray on them. Also buffed the back of the neck to satin up the feel. Restrung with EB slinkies. It is hard to put down now. I have a real deal made in California Ernie Ball Cutlass with stainless steel frets for reference. Is the Firefly better ? nope not really close. Is it a great instrument. yes definitely

I would think a 12” standard radius bridge would be just fine however as that is what is normally used for 12” radius fretboards along with 350mm Asian fretboards at well. Hi Jimmy, I owned a 1973 Fender Precision bass for years. I'm not a bass player, so I eventually sold it. Two weeks ago, I saw a review on another channel of a Firefly Sunburst PJ bass for $170. I ordered one. It arrived this past Tuesday. My Lord, what a beautiful instrument! IMHO, it's nicer than the Fender. The guy who did the review said that the pickups are "good". But he added that you could upgrade to a set of Fender or Geezer Butler pickups, if you wished. Other than that, he called it a "killer bass. " It looks like Firefly has got it dialed in. 😊 Thanks, as always, for the great reviews. Shalom/gw PS would you happen to know anyone who might sell a white pearl pick guard for that bass?

Great guitar, this one came with little need of fixing as did their Jazzmaster version I got last year. Unfortunately the new Gretschy tele red one got recently I had to get out the tools and fix some high frets. But at these prices, can't complain. Could be a problem if you don't have the needed repair skills. Guess one would return it.

Care to comment on the string spacing between them? These are narrower than a standard tele but measurement at 12th fret is wider than most.

Perhaps I am just getting use to the Asian radius, but these play great and the spacing with a a 12” radius bridge is no issue. Thanks for stopping into the channel! 🎸👍

Hi John…thanks for watching and commenting. Firefly has done some “southpaw” guitars in the past. They did some 338’s in lefties and also some LP styles in lefties fairly recently. Obviously, they don’t sell as quickly so they limit their numbers and frequency of release. I have no idea as to when and what models they may release in the future for lefties, but as I said, they have done them in the past. Just have to keep your eye out, and I will as well. @@retired_USAF Thanks so much for watching and commenting. In the “early” days of Firefly guitars, they used a system of serial numbers by model so you could decipher build dates. This didn’t apply to the 338 as they have never included serial numbers. The current serial number scheme no longer applies. It use to be first two digits was the manufacturer plant number, next two digits the month, next two digits the year, and the final digits was the individual number of the instrument within that particular batch. For this particular model, the color is the determining factor…the older 2022 units were not quite as “orange” especially in the neck and no SS frets or Alnico 5 pickups. The newer 2024 version is more “orange” and includes SS frets along with Alnico 5 pickups.

I got mine before you got your new one. Only thing I don't like is a reddish stain on the upper left bout. Otherwise, the rest is beautiful and the neck is awesome!

Mine just arrived today. You must have been sent a ringer, because mine has issues. The nut is cut too high and most of the high E string is dead. After a minute playing my fingers were black. There are a few high frets, but its not too bad. I would rather pay another $25 and have the bloody thing playable out of the box, even if it is a $200 guitar. Yes, it is pretty. The other issue is whatever chemicals the Chinese are using. The chemical odor off of the packing material almost knocked me out and I just returned a semi-hollow bigsby tele because of the harsh chemical odor coming out of the body. My first firefly was a strat and that was pretty decent out of the box. My enthusiasm for the sub $250 chinese guitars is waning, although the Harley Benton TE-62 is pretty darned good..

No “ringers” here my friend…Firefly doesn’t get to check them out prior as they are directly shipped from the manufacturers plant directly to a warehouse in CA and from there to the customer when a order is placed. Sorry to hear yours had issues…a good setup along with strings is to be expected on any guitar bought online, though in my reviews I always try to do the review directly “out of the box” whenever possible. @@JimmyStewart1 Hi Jimmy, Firefly uses a logistics firm called S&B Industries in calif to do their order fulfillment. That doesn't preclude them sending a batch of guitars intended for influencers that have received a proper setup. The only way to do a review on a guitar that has not received special intention is to have a friend order it thru normal channels and have it delivered to their address. Not faulting you, and you did disclose right up front that they sent it to you. Sean at scar my guitar just went over one that a friend of his got and it was also unplayable out of the box. Yes, still a nice looking and playing guitar after a proper setup and fret leveling. My only wish is that their quality control was more consistent and you could count on anything you buy being at least playable, even if it needs a minor tweak. Case in point, I recently got a chinese made Jackson js22 (200 list, i got 160). Other than having to lower the bridge a smidge, it was pretty much perfect out of the box. Plays and sounds like a dream too. I recently sold a japanese jackson soloist pro, so I am familiar with their top of the line guitar quality. Anyway, who cares. Like your videos. Keep on rockin'

@@Vicos Glad you enjoy the videos….as far as FF shipping QC’d and setup guitars to certain folks and not to others, well…I just agree to disagree with you here. I usually do a setup on each guitar I receive (regardless of manufacturer) and some are better than others out of the box. If this was in fact true, then my last two guitars from FF would have had a functional locking nut on the FFST and a working Neck/Middle Pup on the latest SP…😎 Issues I can certainly deal with, but frustrating nonetheless. I get it…the QC is still evolving and continues to need to improve. I have only had a couple guitars that I could not do a review/demo of right out of the box. Neither of them were Firefly’s. Anyway…truly appreciate your stopping in and sharing your thoughts…much thanks! 🎸👍

Said it both ways. I went back to double check. I have 4 firefly guitars the latest is the full maple capped ice tea Matt finish FFSPS with the alnico pups. SS frets. Love it.

Hi Jimmy. I can't help it. To me, that pickguard is ugly. I haven't seen the guitar in person, but if I am correct, the pickguard is clear, with black "paint" spots. Sorry. Dan. 🙁 🙂

@@JimmyStewart1 To me, three of the current stratocasters are pretty, Chameleon Green (I just got it - it sparkles in the sunlight), Chameleon Blue, Sunburst. Maybe the transparent green one, too. I think the blue semi-hollow telecaster is also pretty. There was a red one, but it seemed like it was gone within an hour. And, maybe the transparent green one is also pretty. For the Prince telecaster, I would just change the pickguard. 🙂

well , glad you got a good one, I wish I had the same experience. Mine came out of the box with a severe back bow, I was able to adjust it to be playable, Mine also had Two small finish cracks on either side of the neck pocket. At 200 bucks its not worth going through a return process so I will keep it but it was still a bummer. Other than the flaws I really like the guitar.

I tend to expect some finish imperfections at this price point, but this was virtually flawless. This model really is nice, and with the upgrades being another big bonus! Hi Ricky….hmmm…another cat video? Odin takes offense as he only had about a minute and 15 seconds of screen time on a 32 minute video. 😻 He loves box openings and I was a bit surprised that he actually fit himself into that 3 inch size box. Yes, I could edit all that out, but I don’t. He has fun… I didn’t mention anything about a difference in body size simply because they are identical in body size. Camera angle/perspective and all that… I appreciate your stopping in regardless though…hope you had a wonderful day!
