My son recently purchased a blacked-out Leatherman Wave, and it looks so much nicer than my standard Wave! Add to that, this one-handed Trekker is U.S. Government issue, and you have a very serious contender for the "BEST SAK I'D LIKE TO OWN" award!

Victorinox knives are really an addiction. It's amazing how four identical knives can look so different in the eyes of a knife enthusiast. I'm personally guilty of that 'syndrome' if you will, owning more than 40 as of now. I have that Trekker though not the three other models shown in the video, but wouldn't think twice before buying them should the right time comes. This week I scored a Soldier model from 1940, which is coming in the mail from Switzerland in the next few weeks. Thanks for the video and congrats on the knives.

Hi Tim, I think addiction is a good word. Silly sometimes even, but their quality and utility just make them so attractive. Good score on the 1940 Soldier knife. They have been elusive in good condition.

I do wish it had the toothpick and tweezers. They are both very handy at times, but the toothpick can be replaced with a new tool called the Firefly. It's a fire striker that, for a soldier, Marine, Airman, etc., could be a lifesaver in an emergency situation. I have one for two out of three of my Victorinox SAKs, and they work very well.
@FreeAmericaChannel5 жыл бұрын
I have seen the firefly and I think it would be a cool addition as well. The Dutch and German Army issue Trekker knives don't have the toothpick or tweezers either. I guess that is because they are tiny and get lost. When I carry my regular Trekker I loose the toothpick if it is not is a sheath/pouch.
@mukkaar2 жыл бұрын
@@FreeAmericaChannel That said, it's super useful and you can just replace it, or not. There are many really nice SAK blades with nicer handles, but trailmaster is one I use as my backup blade and multitool for camping/hiking since it has tweezers and toothpick. If you need to pick anything out of your skin it's lifesaver. And toothpick obviously for annoying stuck food. Actually it's often my main blade because most of time camping and hiking I do doesn't require blade.

I wish the US adopted that version because I know for a fact no one will keep it sharp and the next guy to get issued that knife will get a dull baseball bat and probably not know how to sharpen it! I made a lot of money in Afghanistan sharpening other people's knives!!!!
@FreeAmericaChannel5 жыл бұрын
LOL! Baseball bat indeed. You are so right about not sharpening knives. I never carried sharpening gear to the sandbox. Travel light, freeze at night. The M9 bayonet had a ceramic sharpener on the sheath but I never saw anyone actually use it (for any knife).

That's a pretty good side hustle, I have heard of guys who did something similar cutting hair on naval ships, and sowing certain things for others while in the service, but sharpening blades is something I never would have thought of but is definitely something that would be a valued commodity, especially since as you said most people don't know how to sharpen a blade, know how to do it properly, or let alone have the equipment needed to sharpen a blade. @@FreeAmericaChannel and Die Abonnentin, if you are not able to get it through other means you may wish to check out UniversalSpartan.com and look under national stock number items, I believe it is the second from the bottom knife, it is on their website for $99 on sale from their usual $109, there is also essentially the same exact knife for around $55 that can be found on Swiss Army Victorinox's website but it doesn't have the US printed on the side of the anodized black stainless steel, so I understand if you wouldn't want to get that version. You could also possibly get one through a friend if they are in the military or work for the government, and perhaps there is another way that I don't know about, but if you keep your eyes open I am sure you will be able to get one.

Save your money you can get the affordable German version from colemans or amazon. My German vic is built to perform. Go to tractor supply and get the tapered sharpener for peanuts and keep this heirloom quality, go-to, edc system as sharp as you like. A weapon you say? Yep, open the phillips and stick it between you ring and middle finger in your fist for added effect, or use the main blade. It's built for the military by Victorinox hence it's a serious piece of kit. Nuff said.

Free America - Get the right round diamond file, and these serrations sharpen up nicely. Light touch. The Vic pattern of leaving straight edge by the handle is perfect for general utility. Serrations remain effective through a lot if work. All straight edge not as good for a non-tactical utility knife. I wish our army would issue this. But Israeli soldiers all want heavy Leatherman like Surge or MUT. I heard that the black is not simple oxide coating. BTW the US military buys a lot through BA (British Aerospace), so much that BA has incorporated facilities in the US. The Brits also wrote a lot of the software for the F-35 Lightening II. The US buys from us. Israel missiles, armour kits for vehicles, pilot helmets and lots of electronics. What's odd is that Switzerland is not a US allies, whereas Britain and Israel are. But great knife choice. Sure beats what the once-great pocket knife industry in the US produces now. Which is sad. But I'd have preferred a Swisstool Spirit!
@FreeAmericaChannel6 жыл бұрын
isrealpiper, I agree the serrations stay sharp longer than the straight edge. I have the ceramic sharpening tool for serrations, so they don't bother me at all, but I do like the option of a straight edge, so I wish they made both.

Awesome review of a real rarity! Now does THIS one have all the BLADE PLAY of the standard issue civilian One Hand Trekker? I have had mine for a couple of years now. I truly hope there is some way to adjust something in the knife somehow to get rid of the sloppy blade play. I very much DO like the knife overall as a multi tool. The serrated blade on mine with the thumb hole opener is actually very nice and came extremely sharp. I have the Victorinox Hunter as well. The HUGE one the biggest single blade one. Blade play to the Nth degree. Anybody know how to adjust a Victorinox Hunter?

@@specterm2149 I appreciate the response! If it was not for the true versatility I get out of my standard one hand Trekker with its screwdrivers, awl and even wood saw that actually works really well I would have traded it off or sold it off for something else. Victorinox. Good ole Swiss Army Knives. I collected blades for a very long time but only have 3 or 4 multi-tool/blade knives. There has GOT to be several ways to be able to adjust the dangerous main blade play out of my One Handed Trekker and my huge single blade Hunter. My Hunter came with one of the nicest sheaths I have ever seen a huge folding pocket knife come with. The One Hand Trekker is sheath worthy as well. As long as I do not suddenly need a pair of pliers it gets me by better than my Leatherman. Am keeping my eye out for the US variant in this upload

And the same as the One Hand Trekker which is the newer name for the Trail Master. In the USA there was some issue with another company already using Trail Master for a knife so Victorinox changed the name in the USA market to Trekker

The Military buys Beretta , Sig Sauer, so not surprising swiss army knives. Swiss are neutral and make best knives
@FreeAmericaChannel5 жыл бұрын
I agree that Victorinox makes excellent knives, but they don't make them in the US. Beretta and Sig both have factories in the US that produce guns for US military contracts.
@edwardelkins87235 жыл бұрын
@@FreeAmericaChannel Victorinox is my favorite knife. I just bought a set of Smith and Wesson throwing knives I didn't know Smith and Wesson made knives until recently. They are also decent knives but nothing comparable to Victorinox. I wonder if CZ will get a military contract , they are making their guns in U.S. as well. I think the P09 and P10 are just as suitable as the Beretta

No U S companies capable of building a Knife for U S military
@FreeAmericaChannel4 жыл бұрын
Tons of US companies are making knives for the US military, but this is a patented Swiss Army knife that cannot be made by US companies and is a great tool, worthy of consideration for purchase. I have had Swiss Army Knife One Hand Trekker knives since they were first introduced and carried them all over the world while serving in the US Army.
@kothaelser32826 жыл бұрын
I think that the 'US' lettering on the handle looks kind of lame. If the German Army can have an eagle, why can't the US Army have a bald eagle then? Also, why didn't they order it with a clip? Even the standard Victorinox clip is better than no clip.
@pappaclutch32666 жыл бұрын
Don’t like the serrated edge. Don’t like the hole missing in the awl. Don’t like that it doesn’t have the toothpick and tweezers. Don’t like the Philips on the back and not the cork screw, I use that almost daily for knots and digging around. Everything else I like
@FreeAmericaChannel6 жыл бұрын
Haha! George N, this knife is basically the same as the German Army Knife and the Soldier 08.
@israelipiper6 жыл бұрын
So many say they don't like serrations, but they make perfect sense for a utility knife. Especially the Victorinox design of front-end serrations, with a small plain edge for push-cutting close-in. Many love this design because this works well for a utility general purpose knife. It is not a fighting knife, and Victorinox has over a century of experience in designing with, and for, Swiss soldiers. My only suggestion is to consider a slightly wider knife and have a straight and a serrated blade. Victorinox serrations are very good, and they are not difficult to sharpen, if a little time consuming.
