Try to vary his diet. In the wild game fish will practically eat anything they can fit in there mouths. By only feeding them one species of fish there whole life will cause a nutritional imbalance. With that being said awesome fish! And good luck!

Algae over comes the tank, I had uv sterilizers the whole 9 yard no change
@sparkyjones560

Algae can be a problem but it isn't really sunlight. It's too much food and waste in the water or not enough plants to eat up the last stage of the nitrogen cycle, the nitrates, which are fertilizers basically. Higher order plants will consume the nitrates and algae won't have access to it. Ammonia and nitrites are dangerous and it don't take much to kill fish, but that last stage, the nitrates, can get up to 10ppm, 20ppm 30ppm with no adverse effects to the fish so most people ignore them, but when nitrates get high and they aren't breaking all the way down to nitrogen and leaving the water fast enough, the nitrates will build up and algae will take advantage of it and bloom massively. Some people without plants will do water changes to reduce nitrates to zero so algae doesn't become a problem, even a couple ppm is ok, but 10+ ppm winds up algae going nuts.

Lots of light means lot of plant growth. That can be fine, but it might mean more work keeping the water chemistry balanced. Better to keep it from getting too much light. Maybe keep the blinds partially open instead of fully open.

I'm in my 60's and grew up with a dad that bred tropical fish. I've kept multiple tanks all of my life. You're never too old to learn, and I still pick up new things to me from, time to time. LOL, for a new tank, I have it cycling for a couple of months. Personally, I don't think a tank is usually stable until around 6 months or so after set up. Experience is the best teacher and so this guy will learn as time goes on just as we all do.

@sparkyjones560

Asmith12342000 Smith it's a month tops unless you overstock all at one time or have poor filtration. After the first cycle where ammonia spikes and recedes and then nitrites spike and recede as long as you don't stock to fast and let the biological build up it won't spike again. Most people can't just put in one or two fish a week and give the biological the time to adjust to the waste load on the system. They toss in a half dozen fish or a dozen, or more after the cycle and cause it to overload and spike again. Anyways. 6 months don't hurt I guess if you can be that patient, but it isn't necessary.

So here is the thing about filtration. And this applies to fish that are larger bodied more than regular fish. larger bodied means Thick compared to something like an angelfish that is thin. just because your filters together rate at 350 gallons and your aquarium is 220 doesnt mean you are over filtering. In reality especially for these types of fish you are under filtering. The rule of thumb is 10 times over. So you want about 2200 gph for an ideal setup... And I know im being that guy. But your life of maintaining that aquarium will be much much easier and your entire setup healthier if you follow this rule of thumb. I have a 125 and it filters around 800 gph with two sunsun 405bs rated at 525 GPH. This accounts for the fact that all of your sponges media and headheight of plumbing restricts flow alot. So you are more at like 250 gph anyways. Give or take. This is just long term advice. Take it for what you want to. For the baby fish now. Not such a big deal. But when he gets big. Or those bass get so big you need to move them in there. Cichlids of any type are extremely messy.

I raised a Hybrid like this in a 125 like you are doing and they will get to be about 20 inches then you will need to get a much larger enclose. I recommend a stock tank from farm and fleet. I bought a 1000 gallon stock tank for 300 bucks and made a filter out of a 32 gallon brute can used a 5200 gph pump and 2 inch PVC. At this point your thinking either I am crazy or I love fish... Both. I set this all up in my basement and its probably the only reason this worked because year around I had 68 degree water. My water devils (tiger muskies) ended up about 40 inches before one died then the last one just quit eating and lived for weeks with about 200 large gold fish and some wild caught gills and sunfish to eat but he passed on around the age of 10 at 47.5 inches. These fish deserve to be in the wild and a bit of info for you I live in Illinois also and even though its a game fish it is a Infertile Hybrid that can NOT reproduce so it is perfectly legal to keep as a pet. As for releasing into the wild I am not sure of the law but I thought if its here in the wild naturally you can release it. when I was young I caught a tiger in the rock river fishing with my dad, and that started my love for the fish.I currently don't keep game fish anymore but as you said many aquarium hobbyists start out with fish they catch. I have many very large aquariums from 125 up to 300 gallons but I like the 210 or the 225 the best, because the 300 is 8 foot long and the weight of the glass is well 3 times a 125 so it takes 4 strong men to move. the 210 and 225 are 6 foot long and 2 foot wide so fish have a lot more turn around room then in the 125 that is only 18 inches wide. I have see your videos and enjoyed them but I could show you how to make a dolly to help you more your 125 by yourself. Yes I said by your self, even with your stairs on your deck. I moved a 210 a few months ago from my place to my moms alone. It would have been better to have help but when I start asking for help to move a tank my friends all run away screaming. Anyhow enjoy that tiger and keep up with the videos.. I wanna see him when he is a monster.

Wow I share your excitement . I just bought a 55g and 100g from Craigs list and I just got a Redfin Pickerel in the 100g. only a few days ago... Wish I had room for that tank and that fish. Watch out for direct sun on that 200g cause it could turn into an algae nursery sitting next to a window, Northern exposure would be best case. Don't learn the hard way as most of us learned that lesson. I have 60yrs of keeping tropicals from South and Central America. I did a couple saltwater aquariums many yrs ago too. I have native fish to NWC Fla.on my channel lately. I love them too. I thought the Bluegill was very smart and would approach me too. Like a puppy. LOL But he tore up the tank making a nesting area. He had a virus infection when I caught but was in prime shape when I released him back into the pond. Very nice vid . I really enjoyed it. So thanks for your effort in bringing it to us.

Hey Chris. My best guess is that the black spots are parasites (icks) and could be Cryptocotyle sp.. But I'm not that familiar with parasites in the US. I'm a Danish biologist and wrote my master thesis in parasitology (although my thesis was on a quite different parasite, E. multiloccularis) Many icks have a life cycle where the parasite has fish as an intermediate host and doesn't grow to the adult stage of the worm until the worm ends up in a definitive host. The definitive host is proberbly a mammal or a bird of some kind. When the parasite ends up in the definitive host the parasite grows to its adult stage and become sexually mature. From here the parasite can start to produce eggs that spread with feces into water systems and infect new fish.

Awesome fish Chris, have fun with it! I'm sure it'll grow very fast! Look in to grass/redfin pickerel, they make awesome pets and only get 12-14" long, so they're much better suited to aquarium life and still have that characteristic Esox look and attitude. They can also be kept in groups if given enough plants for cover and plenty of food, I have a group 3 in a 125 gallon tank with no issues (knock on wood lol). Just another option for you when this monster outgrows your tank!

Cool. I have never heard of Northern/Muskie hybrids. You might think about putting wire mesh, weights or some other sort of tie-down over top of the glass covers. A fish that size may be able to knock the glass panels loose if he lunges upward. You don't want him getting out of the tank and going after small neighborhood dogs!

That is cool that you put the tank close to the windows to make it easy on the growing of your plants. However please consider that because it is so close to the windows that you may start to have algae spikes from time to time and you are limited on tank mates to control the amount of algae. Also being close to the windows, keep an eye on the temperature in the tank as the seasons could effect the temp one way or another. Otherwise best of luck brother, I'm glad young people have taken to the hobby of keeping fish, in the end, it's all worth the effort.

Careful about too much natural light, it can cause an algal bloom of volvox, which is the single celled genus that causes green water. I think if you keep your nitrate levels low you won't have a problem, I had a bad problem with green water once & had to use a U.V. sterilizer to rid the tank of algae. Good luck with that muskie.

Just a heads up, other then the fact he's gojnna outgrow that tank super quick, but if u already have a established tank, that's been up a while and thriving, when you get s new tank, you can take some of the sponges from one of your other tanks and squeeze all the funk and filth into your new tank (as long as you established tank is clean) but u can squeeze all the funk from you filter fro . The tank you already had established, n make it turn ur tank like chocolate milk or black, the the very next day you can add fish, won't have to wait to a month plus before you can stock it.. it's called "seeding"! New aquarium.. you can Google it just for future references. If ya get another tank instead of setting it up, addijng ammonia waiting for it to cycle etc, just squeeze all the funk from your filter sponges into the new tank and the next day you can add fish. . I've been doing it for 21 years

It is fun to sit and watch your fish just swim around. Good luck with him and yes if you keep that window open a lot you will be cleaning algae off the glass all the time. Not telling you how to run your tank dude but there are some things that will just happen.

Hello! I've been breeding fish, shrimp, and plants for 10 years now. I just came across your video, keep up the good work! I do want to mention one thing though. Early in the video you mention Uv lightning on your tank. UV cannot travel through glass. So you won't be getting any UV light from your window OR the top of your tank (that is, if your tank tops are glass). You're probably fine with the setup you have right now, but if you experience any plant melting or early decaying; I would suggest stronger, more defined light options like LED floodlights(the colored variety). I have at least one of these lights on each of my 30 tanks.

Awesome tank! Make sure to keep some type of lid or cover on the top. The reason I'm saying this is because I used to work as a manager of a small bait shop in TX, and one day I walked in and found our 4lb spotted bass dead on the floor. He had jumped out of the tank (I think trying to eat a minnow?). Either way, wasnt fun to peel him off the floor!

Paint the back of the tank black to eliminate the sunlight. If you have too much sunlight you will grow algae. And plus the black background looks good too.

I actually had a pet pickerel named Jaws, when I was younger. He was in a 50 gallon tank for about 4 years without a single problem. I actually caught him in a net while playing in a creek and he was probably 4 in. long. We did release into the wild at a private pond when he was about 10 inches. I fed him goldfish and minnows. I would sit there and watch that thing for hours sometimes, waiting for him to eat

Used to have a tiger muskie in my 125. When I got him he was the size of a cigarette, he was over 16 inches and FAT within a couple years. I was spending 3.00 a day on feeder goldfish at that point to keep him happy, lol so ole Mitch the muskie ended up in his natural habitat(a friends lake that was overpopulated with stunted bass). Nobody has caught him since but some Mitch sightings have been made at the dock and he is reportedly over 30 inches now and nice and chunky. It was fun while it lasted though, used to have neighbors that would come over religiously just to watch feeding time for Mitch, haha. Don't think I would do it again unless I could afford something bigger, like a 1000 gallon acrylic and another large tank to breed feeder fish...

Cool fish, they look like little cuda's at that size. He will outgrow that tank in a year or two, maybe less.... If you want to slow his growth keep the water on the cooler side of their tolerance. Careful with the wood, it'll leech tanins into the water.

Had a 7 inch northern pike pet for a while, woke up one night and the baby snapping turtle, not a two inch shell had him bit in half. If you keep bullfrogs in a deep tank like that and a spot to come and sit out of water they'll dive to get fish and anything else that moves.

You should black out the back of the tank, either with a film or paint. It’ll help with algae growth and it’ll help regulate temps. Same with getting a solid aquarium hood. Even better if that hood has lights specifically for plants. It’ll also hide the bubble wands or heaters or whatever you have along the back and will make the muskie and plants pop. It’s easy to do and looks great. Also consider a planted aquarium substrate like Fluorite Black or Aquasoil. Or even organic garden/pond soil under your existing substrate. It’s a pain in the ass to change substrates but you’ll notice your plants will be much healthier and more vibrant in no time with better growth rates, etc. and will be able to root better.

Tiger muskies grow quite big actually. Not as big as a muskie, but bigger than pike. And the water quality doesn't need to be perfect. Tigers are very hardy fish. And it wouldn't really hurt to release it as they are sterile. All that aside, I love the setup and I had a similar, although considerably smaller setup when I was younger. I netted a small pickerel(around 7-8 inches) and kept it for a few months before releasing it. It was cool to watch him go stealth predator mode on mosquito fish I caught to feed him.

If you're gonna use the logs, let them sit in water for a month or two, and change the water every week or 2. it'll pull alot of the tannins and shit out of the log, it'll also make it so it sinks for sure when you put it in.

Moby! Moby Muskie, as in Moby Dick the whale. Also was the name of the muskie that was pursued by Bill Gardner in his book, Time On The Water. The book tells the story of selling his L.A. home and moving his family to Vilas County Wisconsin to spend a full season trying to catch a muskie over 30 pounds, in 1980. The book is considered a Classic of muskie fishing stories. Hard to find a copy of it now. You should read it if you can. Try Amazon or google, sometimes copies are for sale.
