Chris, I have a pet grass pike, walleye, and longnose gar. I learned the hard way that feeding goldfish or shiners from bait or pet stores is wrong, lost my original walleye to diseases. I have stopped feeding those types of foods and go out every month and catch a load of bait fish in a seine net and keep them in a stock tank until ready to be eaten. It is very helpful and I thought you would be able to use this advise. Good luck on the Muskie and hope you have fun keeping these awesome fish!
@umhippo7 жыл бұрын
Jar Kas in regards to this comment chris you can put the bait fish in with the other two just make sure you can differentiate them or there are tank dividers so you can split them up
@jaredkassouf10177 жыл бұрын
I also remember Chris saying that the Muskie would be exchanged for a smaller one once he outgrew the tank, so I don't think you would have any problems with bear gills and tiger woods in the same large tank.

Just make sure to look for signs of aggressiveness if you do.

You need to find a good pet store to get feeders from. And use a bucket and net to dump them out of the water from the pet store. So no Walmart fish!! Or any pet shop that isn't good. My Green sunny got sick a few times from feeders that game from lesser pet shops! Always dump the water out from the bag, it's a must. I kept aquariums for years, worked at a nursery in Water gardening, a very good fish store, and was gonna be a Fisheries Biologist. So I'm not talking outta my arse.

@NorthwestBearcat12147 жыл бұрын
If you have an extra smaller tank, you can buy bulk feeder fish, keep them in there and treat them for any parasites. Also just keeping them in the tank would eventually kill the parasites since it would be different. After you've quarantined the feeders, they will be ready to feed. (I used to do this with my bass and Oscars, never had a problem)

Hey Chris! Feeding your muskie minnows and goldfish from petstores should be fine, as long as you get their own "quarantine" tank. A 10 gallon holding tank with a sponge filter is really all you need to keep an eye on them, to make sure they don't have any parasites. If you want to be extra safe you could even use all purpose fish meds (gets rid of bacteria, fungus, parasites, etc.) and after a few days they should be ready to go.

Shad, Frogs, Shrimp, Craws, Night-Crawlers...these are just a handful of things that I imitate/use to catch bass, trout and perch but anything from the Esox Family (Pikes, Pickerels, Muskies) loves those too. Seeing them dart at it from next to the dock, out of a weed-bed literally scares me sometimes.

@kevindifranco34947 жыл бұрын
Yes aquatic insects, the larvae and immature forms of insects. They really wouldn't eat many terrestrial insects.
@danielripman41387 жыл бұрын
They most certainly will eat all sorts of bugs big and small you would be surprised to learn how big of a bass or pike or muskie will still regularly eat bugs!!! The thing you guys don't understand that the fish do, is the amount of protein in bugs and how easy they are to catch even compared to minnows! Iv caught chain pickerels twice the size of this muskie on foam crickets!! Pretty much all the esox fish are pretty dumb and will eat about anything in there way!
@kevindifranco34947 жыл бұрын
They aren't trout and I don't see any essox regulary encountering terrestrial insects. They are designed to ambush fish and as soon as they are big enuff that will be the main part of there diet. You can catch Salmon and Lakers in the Niagara gorge when they're hitting... on a hook with a piece of a styrofoam cup. Is that part of their natural diet? Just cuz they will hit something you present to them doesn't mean it is a normal menu item. Try going to college and reading books.
