Great Video describing the repair and moving forward with the SR 99 Tunnel

CooLDster, Seattle Tunnel Partners refers to the location as “Safe haven 3.” It is a pre-planned stop along the route (there are several pre-planned stops), where the ground has been improved with concrete columns. This more easily allows STP to check the workings of the machine and, if necessary, replace worn parts (like the cutting tools that dig into the ground). The location is actually in a Seattle Tunnel Partners work zone just south of the ferry dock, so there will be no impact to parking. There are no businesses there or nearby. Glad you enjoyed the video.

+wsdot How will the 4-ft of sand cover be held in place while tunnel sections are installed? I'm picturing sand falling through since it's not as stable/compactable as soil & dirt.

+CooLDsteR They jet grout(pump concrete) around the face of the tunnel as it cuts, and then place the rings. picture it like laying tile in mortar

are we still on schedule to resume full tunneling Nov. 23rd? ?? Such a monumental task on the repairs. Great Work. Fingers crossed this will keep me and many others working through the winter. Hats off to you all.

+Gingeria1 Because this is a design-build contract, the contractor (Seattle Tunnel Partners) is responsible for the means and methods of building the SR 99 tunnel. This includes the project schedule. The contractor's latest schedule says tunneling will resume on Nov. 23, but the state cannot verify that date. Glad you like the video.

At the location 430 ft ahead, what was this called, where on the waterfront is it located by (shops, parking, etc) and what material is in place for the "pit stop" work, if needed? Good video, thank you.

why can anyone else in the world build tunnels 8 or 10 times longer and the American engineers are so inept ?

+jdsol1938 Bertha is the world's largest boring machine so you cannot compare it to smaller machines. The problems are mostly Hitachi's design flaws.
