Man, i have been a patreon and supporter of you guys for several years now. I still find myself going back to some of your older videos from time to time, especially some of the more memorable ones like July 4th episode, etc. its amazing how far you guys have gone, impressive! I must say that i miss your old closing theme that was Early by DJ Quads. Hearing that song on some of your older videos brings back an odd nostalgia. I guess its because i have worked many years as a night shift supervisor at EMS and i always finished my day (night) watching one of your episodes while drinking some bourbon before going to bed. It was a way to unwind from a crazy shift. I also went through a lot during that time including working in healthcare during COVID and losing my mom. But i could always find a sense of normalcy by unwinding with you guys over one of your new episodes. So without getting sentimental any further, you guys have brought laughter, knowledge, fellowship, and joy to many through Bourbon. Keep up the great work!

Now Gold, or SFTB... those are special, special bottles. Borderline hall of fame tier. Some SFTB can compete with the BTACs. But honestly I prefer all of the other offerings on the shelf from BT to Blanton's. Even a store pick of BT blows Blanton's out of the water for probably half of the price. You could support a local store that has a barrel, get two BT store picks, and probably be happier than one Blanton's.

This is what happens when distilleries focus on volume quotas instead of ensuring the brand's quality. ALL single barrel products across the industry have suffered greatly from this shift in focus. It's a form of "brand cashing", and it's driven by a maximum profit mentality.

I would disagree about "all". Kentucky Spirit is still very solid, especially if you can find them from particular rick houses. New Riff single barrels are fantastic. Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select and SBBP are incredible. I haven't had a Henry McKenna that isn't great although there are people that have.

My first Blanton's was a college graduation present to myself in 1990. Many followed over the years. It has gotten younger tasting since the beginning days of the bourbon boom. The sheer number of newbies has killed the old standards.

They do excellent marketing. The BTAC line has been average for the last couple years compared to 10 years ago except the WLW. Van Winkle line is unicorn tear hype, and the 15 is a shell of what it used to be 10 years ago. EHT is great whiskey, but the last couple batches of the barrel proof haven’t been amazing, especially the last 12 and 13 and barrel proof rye. And Weller is good bourbon, especially the OWA. The full proof tastes young and the CYPB is just goofy marketing. Regular Buffalo Trace is a very good sipper for under $30 and store picks can be amazing.

The first time I had Blanton's was close to the time of the older bottle. I remember liking it a lot better back then. Also, it was easy to find and reasonably priced. When I've had it more recently, I haven't liked it as much, and I do not think it is worth the trouble to hunt for it. I have wondered if I moved on from it, as I tend to prefer more intense stuff these days. This video seems to show that the product has changed too, and not for the better. I have a bottle of Blanton's SFTB, and that is a different story. It has the intensity that I crave, and it is a lot more complex than any standard Blanton's I've had at a bar recently. I don't know if mine came from an unusually good barrel or if the current formula for Blanton's works better at higher strength.

Blanton's is WAY overrated and now that's it's gone up by $25 to be $75 before tax in my neck of the woods, it's even more of a no-go for me. I'd buy EH Taylor over Blanton's if I had the choice, EH is a much better whiskey.

I used to do that and stopped for several reasons. 1. You can enjoy quality stuff that is shelf available. 2. The marketing monopoly is ridiculous. 3. The msrp and offering price is usually 150 to 200% higher. I have a few bottles from when I used to hunt but I really enjoy what readily available now.

I'd say about 30% of all blantons bottles i've had were straight up disappointing. Like objectively not good, not just bad for Blantons, if that makes sense. When you get a good one though, it's amazing. Probably the most variance of any single barrels I've ever had from a single distillery.

Food for thought: an older bottle doesn’t necessarily mean it has been open for 20 years. For example, I have a 1983 bottle of Evan Williams 12yr from Japan. I opened it two weeks ago, so not 40+ years worth of oxidation. By contrast, I also have a 1989 Blantons that remains sealed. I’m not sayin, I’m just sayin! Cheers! 🤓

Some conspiracy theory shit for you. Harlan Wheatley became Master Distiller at BT in 2005. It is completely possible that he changed something in the process to cause the different tastes. Then again, it could also be any of 1000 other things. But only 1 of those bottles was in a barrel prior to him taking over.

I believe it’s the younger oak trees they’re using nowadays, which mean lower amounts of wood sugars and other chemicals in the oak that add flavor and filter the distillate when charred. The trees they used 30 years ago were probably 30-40 years old. I’d guess they’re half that now.

I n my experience with Blanton’s, once you open a bottle you need to drink it three to four months. When the bottle reaches the point of less than half full it becomes undrinkable.

Great video exposing what we have all been realizing on a platform… this is why I watch you guys. I guard my old bottles of Elmer t Lee with everything, you can even see how much darker the whiskey is than the newer bottles…. Ever since ETL passed away I swear that whiskey was never the same :/ I only enjoy the older bottles. Blanton’s definitely has had the same fate older bottles are much darker and is actually good whiskey and we paid $60!! lol now it’s $100-$120 on average if you find it in store in Florida I’ll never buy it again personally.

I bought 2 bottles of standard blantons dated 2024. I was looking forward to the experience but I regret the purchase. Tastes flat, watered down and very grainy. No sweetness to speak of.
