Forgot to mention in video that a big downside with the SKX013 if you change straps often is that it does not have drilled lug holes !

Nice review. In 2023, buying a automatic watch that doesnt hand wind or hack doesnt make sense. Hand winding is practical feature and useful. There is a reason manufacturers included that feature in modern movments. SKX013 isnt cheap any more . For a new piece it can cost upto $500 upwards now. It was introduced in 1996 . The SRPK is 100 mts/328 feet WR so it is more than capable for swimming in oceans for 99.9% of the swimmers.

While I prefer the new model, and while I do understand why people like hacking and hand winding, I personally don't need them. For me, it is even faster to set a watch that doesn't hack. I also find hand winding useless because all you need to do to set it is to get the seconds hand going, and a gentle wobble is more than enough for that. Some high end watches that don't feature hacking are made by Patek Philippe, F. P. Journe and Philippe Dufour, among others. It's interesting how we all have different tastes even when it comes to features like that :)

@@kresimirpleic I do a desk computer job. I have experienced personally that with all my wrist movements, an automatic watch suffers from accuracy and there is a need for manual winding. Secondly maual winding was introduced by manufacturers based on the demand for it. Otherwise they would have continued with movements like 7S26 foreever and wouldnt have introduced the 4R36 as an improvement

Great video. I have two of the new SRPK watches, teal green and champagne and like them a lot. Perhaps I might pick up the black model from this video, as I liked the look. FWIW... I'm an old military guy and could not use a watch without hacking. I've been in too many briefings where everyone had to match their watches to the Commander's watch (his is always right😊), and that can't happen if everyone's second hand is on different random places on the dial. Every morning, I sync my watch of the day to my atomic clock and press on. My OCD would kill me if I couldn't hack my watch. YMMV.

Between the two, I pick the skx. However, in my opinion, both watches are currently overpriced for what you get. The srpk will most likely come down in price closer to the srpd. The skx will probably continue to climb, within reason. If you have to have the "legacy" of the skx, well that is what it is. If not, there are a lot of other options in this price bracket. I mean, for around the same money (sometimes less), you can get a seiko prospex diver or turtle diver, even a samurai. Also, it has to be said. Orient, glycene and citizen are also worth a look if youre looking at the srpd/srpk/skx.

Bro I don’t see how the SRPK is overpriced. I bought mine for $227. What else you going to get besides something from aliexpress for that price?
@robertmorano2372
@robertmorano2372 Жыл бұрын
@@turnbasedtoddy7664 that's an incredible price. I've seen the srpd that low, but not the srpk. Just the usual culprits in that price range. Orient, Timex, some citizens, even casio. I do think (depending on what you're looking for) seko is kind of falling behind on what you're getting. I think they rely a little too heavy on the name on the dial. And rightfully so in many ways. I just think Seiko has now made their "sweet spot" in the $5-600-$1000 range. I mean, the Seiko srpd is obviously targeted directly at the orient ray/mako/kamasu line (for example) the ray/mako can be found for well under $150 (I've seen as low as $120 new) and has 200 meters of water resistance, threaded crown, etc. And the kamasu has "better" features on paper and is still cracking under $200. Just thinking out loud. I'd still own and wear any of these seikos and own other seikos. I just think they have lost their way slightly in the very entry level market. And this may be on purpose.

Since they don't manufacture the SKX013 anymore, I bought a used one which costs a lot more than its original MSRP. But because of the faded orange "Diver's 200m" description above the 6 o'clock and a clicking bracelet due to a broken bead, I returned it. Instead, I got the Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Dive at 37mm or 1mm smaller than the SKX and with an aftermarket jubilee bracelet, it is an awesome replacement. It's a true dive watch. That made me stop looking for another used SKX013.

They do it but I've only seen it on their more expensive models like SPB143 or the mid tier solar SNE's like my SNE583. For the more affordable models with 18mm clasp, they use a shorter, more basic clasp with no divers extension and less real estate for micro adjusts.

I wish I'd bought all the SKX013 watches on the market 6 years ago, when I bought mine. They were £60 (about $80) new. They've increased in value better than my pension fund. Seriously though I just don't understand the price-hikes across most watch brands. There's definitely been lots of KZbin Influencer Hype about watches. When people see influencers wearing $400,000 watches then $500 seems like nothing, and everyone must have a watch collection nowadays.

It fits. But the 5KX bracelet is utter garbage. Not even the links throughout are solid and you can see the "seams" on the sides of it. Long Island Watch has a bracelet with female solid endlinks + solid links + milled clasp for the 013. They sell the "female endlink conversion kit" separatedly.

@@mr_jbe I do own one bracelet from them, but not that particular one. I own one for the Orient Ray. I guess the quality would be the same as the one for the 013. I like mine. I also had to import it - I am in Europe. Uncle, I've never experienced. Strapcode I have experienced way too many and I certainly don't want another one. They have too many QC problems for my taste. Clasps are not well finished, they are hard to close, their bracelets links don't flow as they should and get stuck together, etc. My LIW bracelet had none of that, it was very good. And it still is, I wear it regularly. But then again I only experienced one of them.
@watchify1775
@watchify1775 Жыл бұрын
The 5KX bracelet does technically fit and you could wear it on the SKX if you used the thinner spring bars that come with the 5KX bracelet. However I don't think it looks good. The SKX lugs extend past the 5KX end link and a lot of the case between the lugs is now showing. Plus the thinner spring bars makes the end link a bit jiggly. The SKX bracelet can be worn with the 5KX if you use the thinner spring bars, but again not a good match. End link extends too far past the 5KX lugs.

Seiko had every chance to increase profits by upgrading the SKX's bracelet, crystal, and movement. Instead they released a diver-style watch nobody wants. I am building a SKX013 with an OEM dial and bezel, and it will have sapphire, an NH36A, and a solid link bracelet with screws (the watch Seiko should have made).
@watchify1775
@watchify1775 Жыл бұрын
Good for you! However I do think that many people like and are buying the new SRPD\SRPK's nonetheless. Seiko has to work within certain price constraints. Yes they could have made a proper SKX013 V2 but the price would have been in the 700-900$ range I think which would have priced out many consumers.

5kx line has nothing to do with the original skx..and I'm not talking about the specs, but also about the design, the dial etc. Seiko skx is a very good investment. You will be able to buy a new old stock skx for a few thousand in a few years...if you can find one of course. Nothing that came out on the market from Seiko in recent years or other models are like skx..whatever some say. It is already considered vintage since was produced from 1996, but they are also rare because no one really sells the SKX007 anymore, being very collectible. It will be quite difficult to catch an unmodified skx in the next years. I personally just bought 3 new old stock from an individual who had 6 skx007, brand new, $240 each. When I called to get more...they were already sold... Wait 5 years from now...people will be able to trade a nos skx..for a Rolex. Why? Because Rolex is still produced...while Skx is no longer produced and has become a classic neo-vintage tool.
