A newer movement would certainly give you more functionality but I do not agree that it will give you more reliability than the original. I appreciate the purist plain original movement. I bought my 007 in 2018. But I bought one in 2002 for my son and his is still running as good as new without a service.

We watch geeks love our SKX's, but we're a small part of the market. The SRPD series are great sports watches, and they're way more appealing to the masses. Seiko is in business to make money.

It's funny how people will pay thousands for a 100m Rolex but a 100m Seiko is unacceptable lol. I recently bought the SRPD76K1 as my first Seiko and I don't regret it.

I feel exactly the same. I love my SRPD55 and wear it nearly every day. It has the same vibe as the SKX and a sharper style. I worried about the specs when reading about it, but after getting mine in my hands I knew it didn't matter. I don't dive, and it withstood the rigors of the hotel pool just fine. Now I want more of the new 5 Sports range...

The SRPD is a good watch. I’ve personally owned the SRPD 51. The reason why he will pay thousands for a Rolex, but say 100 m Seiko is unacceptable, is because Rolex hold its value very very easily. Is that it’s the only watch I’m aware that you can actually sell for more money than you bought it for. The reason why the seiko 100 m seen is unacceptable, is because Seiko advertise the watch as the successor to the SKX and did everything they could to make it look like it was a divers watch, when I really wasn’t

The lifetime warranty of the Rolex, no questions asked is a strong sling point. The Rolex is pretty much indestructible. At least mine has been and it's 58 years old. But i works really like the Seiko and I bet it's every bit as tough.

I was looking at SKX and their prices, then the newer SKX downgrade - SRPD and pricing. Both are not great to me. I choose a different route, buying cheaper and more unique pre-SKX models, the Seiko 7002. Real patina with arguably better movement and parts (no plastics). 😆

I have a 5KS, and really like it. Yes, the water resistance is less; but after owning several 7S26s over the years, I'm glad for the better movement as trade off. But I must admit I'm curious about the Turtle.

this is the same sentiment i have. it's like trading off a 8k screen with a 4k screen, but now the normal videos that aren't 8k, look good and crisp because you never really could take advantage of the 8k technology. So trading off the 200m for a more practical movement for most watch owners, is a big win

@@Jake-bt3fc but that's not a comparable example BECAUSE of the RISK involved. I'd also go overboard with my deck because that absolutely cannot fail me and cause harm to a person. My example of the 8k vs 4k is more comparable. You don't gain much of anything by buying a 8k as apposed to a 4k screen because the actual value you extract from it is minimal.

I bought my 007k for 450$ and I love it! Everyday I’m looking at my watch and feel that harizma. The main secret of skx: that design came from 1978 quartz divers mod. 7648 so it’s not 96. That’s why it’s the last classic seiko and yeah you should buy it.

SKX’s are still brilliant. They’re still super cheap for a 200m ISO diving watch that is iconic. Should you paying $40K for a Rolex that is losing thousands of dollars a year is a better question! 😂

Great overview of the two models. I, like many, started out with an SKX. I wore my first 009 for 18 months before purchasing another watch. I eventually sold it and bought and sold 30 other watches. I recently picked up an SKX007J for $350 and am over the moon with it. I've liked a lot of watches, but I love the SKX. I read somewhere that the SKX is one of the last dive watches designed to be used for diving. I think that's what watch enthusiasts are after, at least I am. I want purpose built tool watches-regardless if I'm actually going to use them for their intended purposes.

I’ve got an SKX009 and an SRPD55. Love both. Mostly wear the SRPD55. Got the 009 in 2018, And it was actually produced in 2018. Got the SRPD for all the specs. I’ve wanted a seiko 5 for a long time, but most of the old ones have small cases, 19 or even 17mm lug width, WR of only 30m. I’ve payed around 240€ for the 009, and around 280€ for the SRPD55. I can’t swim so I don’t care for the 200m of WR.

Thanks for this informative video. One question: If you get the new NH36 movement for your SKX009, will the original SKX009 crown and stem fit NH36 just like that or will they need to be changed?

It will definitely need the proper NH36 stem and a new crown. As far as I remember, the OG crown is pressed on the stem without a thread. And since the proper NH36 stem is needed, you can't reuse the original crown. Just keep the OG SKX crown and stem together with the old 7s26 if you ever want to reverse the swap.

I don't view the new models are a replacement the SKX. They're simply the models that came after the SKX was discontinued. I agree that they're fashion watches, and I don't like the font used for the new 5. Had Seiko upgraded the SKX with another movement and crystal and called it the SKX 2.0 that woukd be different. I'm glad I got my 009 in 2017!

The SKX is truly an iconic watch. But divers now use dive computers. Between an SKX and an SSK GMT, the latter is probably more practical and cheaper. Especially if you travel.

I bought a 2018 SKX about a year ago. The case and crystal were in near mint condition. The 260USD I paid was a VERY good price considering what most of the others were going for on Ebay. I'm the third owner. The second owner didn't wear it that much. My only issues with the watch are a misaligned chapter ring; and I'm not sure if the watch had been serviced by someone who wasn't good at it. There's a speck of dust and a small smudge on the inside of the crystal; and the crystal was wobbly when I got it. Did somebody do some work in there, or is the Malaysia QC just that bad? I don't know. Still, I like this watch a lot. I'm sorry I didn't buy one as my first "serious" watch.

UPDATE - The movement failed, so I sent it to the Seiko re;pair center in New Jersey; $195. Got it back yesterday, and it's perfect. Runs like a Lexus, new Hardlex crystal and they aligned the chapter ring.. Should be good for the next ten years if not more.

I just bought a cheap Chinese knock-off (Tandorio), interested to see how it'll hold up. It's quite amazing how much watch $70 can buy you these days - sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel insert and an NH35 caliber. The 200m WR is bound to be highly exaggerated, that's out of question; I do hope that taking it for a swim will not be a problem though (making sure all seals are properly greased and the caseback is done up properly).

I have the SKX007 with the 7S26 B caliber , and it has a small issue with its capacity. It lasts like 12-14 hours, even if I wear it all day. Also sometimes it stops even if my hand is moving without reason. Is anyone has the same issue?

My guess would be, that something creates unusual high friction within the movement, some issue with the automatic system or a mainspring issue. The automatic winding in Seiko movements is usually very efficient. How old is your watch?

Do you need a screw down crown to go for a "splash in the pool"? Srpd have better movements, more colors, designs, bracelets to choose from. Remember how skx were modified to ridiculous extents? A push down crown is way better for a daily use (wind up and set time more easily), specially if you have a rotation, and 100m wr is more than 99% of users need. If you really need a screw down crown you should look into real diver watches, turtle, samurai... if you cant afford it, go for g-shock or citizen.

Don't buy. The SRPD is a better watch except for the waterproofing. You can still take a swim with it without worrying about it. You will enjoy the watch more with the display back and the upgraded movement.

I bought one years ago after I already owned more expensive Swiss watches because they were cool and I could use it as a true beater. But I would never buy one now at the prices they want. The movement is terrible . I have a Turtle that is +3 spd dial up and between -8 and -3 in other. I have a SPB143 that’s +1 dial up and between -3 and -1 in other positions. My SKX is -47 dial up and between -14 and - 38 in other positions!

And all the original ones at that price are on a rubber bracelet instead of the jubilee bracelet or a jubilee bracelet without the original end link engravings with the bracelet model number on them

@Alasdair Diamandis Around $280 USD. For an SKX007J around $375 USD. Check listing descriptions! Even the expensive ones often have aftermarket bracelets. What to look for: -Made in Japan on the dial for an SKX007J and JAPAN WP or JAPAN A on the caseback. No MIJ text and text starting with 7S26 on the dial of an SKX007K with A or WP on the caseback (no Japan) - An orange Diver's 200m line. Green/yellow indicate sun bleaching - For A models the end links to the bracelet should say 0020 G-E (0020 on one tab and G-E on the other) and the links should be flat with no hole/gap in the links and three arrows on the links closest to the snaps. On the WP models it should say 44G1-ZI on one of the end tabs and the one right adjacent to it should be blank. So 44G1-ZI should appear on two end link tabs out of four - Make sure the engraving on the caseback is clear and has not been overpolished - Make sure the lume pip/dot at the top of the bezel is recessed/inside an indentation for it. The font should be a silver grey rather than white and the 10 text should look more like "|0" rather than 10 - a straight 1 with no hat if that makes sense

The newer SRPD 100m non screwdown crown version sucks! I bought one in a pepst bezel and just couldn't bond with it knowing it's just a dumbed down SKX. And there's no right or wrong time to buy a SKX if you see one and it hits the spot buy it.

You will be able to buy a new old stock skx for a few thousand in a few years... if you can find one. Nothing that came out on the market from Seiko in recent years (5kx line, Turtle, Prospex) or other models are like skx..whatever some say. It is already considered vintage since it is from 1996, but they are also rare because no one really sells the SKX007 anymore, being very collectable. It will be quite difficult to catch an unmodified skx. I personally just bought 3 new old stock from an individual who had 6 skx007, brand new, $240 each. When I called to get more... they were already sold..

I bought my skx007 and got rid of my blue srpd I then purchased a blue orient Kamasu which is a great watch. I want to put my skx away to keep it in excellent condition as I wear it daily now but will probably buy a orient mako 2 to use daily

Simply put. The Skx is a tool watch, the Srpd is a watch trying to look like a tool watch. Personally I dislike skin divers. However I completey understand why people do like them.

The new srpd is nice but like you said no screw down crown what I hate is they did away with the old Seiko 5 and replaced it with the srpd. What they should have done is kept both and if they wanted to add to the Seiko 5 models with the srpd they could have called it the Seiko 5 sport.

My biggest regret is 5 years ago I bought a Ray 2 instead of an SKX007 out of rational thinking... not realising the wanting was emotional until too late. Ray only lasted 2 years in the collection as I didnt connect w it. The SRPD is a great line but not a worthy SKX 'successor', hence SKX prices are sky high.

If your 7S26 is regulated its bullet proof, I have an SKX009, had an SKX007 that I bought in 1998 which I gave to my brother 10 years ago that he still wears daily and three SNK8xx field watches in my collection that are also bomb proof. I have watches that cost 10,20 and 30x more in my watch box and for the durability, toughness alone these are worth it at 2-4x the OG price, they will only increase in value overtime time. I agree if you want one just get it.

Here is my opinion that’s the one who owns the SRPD 51 and absolutely loves it, the SKX is not worth it in 2022. I’m sorry but I can’t justify spending $500 on this thing when it doesn’t pack, doesn’t hand wine, it’s not it’s not being made anymore, and I have to worry about it stopping if I don’t wear it more than two days. If you really want an SKX, I would recommend you check out the brand Heimdallr. They are a Chinese company that makes an almost identical homage to the original SKX but with some very serious upgrades. For one and use the exact same movement as the SRPD, comes in either stainless steel or titanium, your choice(The titanium version actually comes with a really cool underwater scene on the face of the watch) also comes in most colors including green, black, orange, blue, red whatever you want. The only other major difference between the original SKX and behind Do version is the date window is written in English and Spanish on the Seiko versus English and Chinese on the Heimdallr

Lol skx are fugly . Good watches but not worth what hey are asking! No good time keepers. In NO way rare! Not had made. Not made in japan like the dial says.(100% true, not made in japan) made in Malaysia sent back to japan with made in japan markings for a japan market! Seiko need to be a little more honest about. Were the watches are made. I dont even feel the skx is that collectible there are millions and millions of them around and fairly new. Iso rating is also kinda lame. It is not a permanent rating at all. And after 5 years it needs new gaskets and even tho it is just as water proof as ever , even more so, it will never be ISO again. Buying a 20 year old skx and saying its iso certified is not real.

People said the same thing about the 6306/09 Turtles and the 6105 Willard. Look at the market prices of those models have gone. Vintage Turtles, 6105's, and SKX (yes, many are now vintage) will only go in one direction in the future.

The Kamasu is class... The SKX is trash. I seriously don't understand why the SKX is popular. Bulky, thick, oversized and over-priced. It has the dictionary meaning of tinny garbage bracelet... and to top it off, the brilliant 7s26 NON-hacking and handwindable movement 🤢🤮

For the price point, the answer is no and no. Buy a watch with a screw down and better bezel alignment for the same price and same movement just made by someone else than Seiko. The quality control on the lower models just isn't worth it anymore
