The Siberian city of Khanty Mansiysk has become extremely rich thanks to oil. In some parts of Russia, villages are emptying because residents seek better prospects, like the ones happening in Khanty Mansiysk. Jelle visits such a village.
Original title: Siberische belofte
What's left of communism? How big are the differences between the poor and the rich? What is the influence of corruption? Is Russia a "young democracy" (as former Dutch prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende previously said)? Is it a "sovereign democracy" (according to Putin) or a "fascist regime" (as read in The Economist)? Jelle Brandt Corstius is looking for the topics that rule the life of ordinary Russians in Russia.

Thank you very much for these fantastic documents. You come closer to this amazing country and the people than any other foreign journalist by knowing their language. Keep up the good work!

Since last year I've discovered VPRO series and you're my favorite channel so far! I'm in awe that the Netherlands, being a small nation is so curious about the world and produce such high-end documentary movies. Love it so much. I wish you had Russian subtitles for the movies so I could share it with my friends and families, it would be great for them to see our country from your perspective and learn more about it

Hi Marie Filonenko, thanks a lot for your nice feedback, we really appreciate! We were not able to make Russian subtitles as we do not have the budget, but if you know somebody that is into doing subtitles we would like to get in touch!

We have a similar situation of boom & bust here in Quebec. Our economy is based on the exploitation of natural resources, just like in Russia. That's not a reason to be pessimistic. Nowadays, societies evolve faster than ever.

Amazing how few people in "progressive" Canada realize that... it's like they don't even know about the tar sands in Alberta, and they moralize endlessly about the US... I digress

When I was a student in the summer I worked on the drills in the Canadian North-West. This program shows similar situations. In Canada such places are known as Ghost Towns. In 1982 from the airport I took a taxi to downtown Portland, Maine. I saw block after block of 4-stories buildings boarded up. That part of the city was deserted. People moved to the suburbs to get away from the poor (the blacks). And Portland is not the only such city in the USA. Even San Diego. Ca, who was a jewel city not too long ago is joining Detroit, Chicago and Cleveland in decay. That what you get with free enterprise. The fact is that the communist party is quite strong in Russia. The fact also is that the Russians rather vote for a capitalist system with its corruption than to return to the way it was under Stalin.

oh, what emotions. the proud and radiant neftyannik who got lucky to be so privileged, the sad and indignant shop assistant, the hysterical woman who interrupts her and ends up agreeing with everything that has been said. and through all the series there will always be this one Russian guy who just relates everything calmly and logically, and he ends up being my favourite character. there are 2 things I note: 1) the astonishing passivity ('oh but what can we do?'). 2) the lack of trust that the Russians sometimes exhibit towards foreigners, and it shows even in their facial expressions. surprisingly, babushki are usually quite open towards голландцы, I guess curiosity prevails :)

Jelle is голландцы, but he did live in Russia for years and speaks the language. That helps, don't you think? :) It's really nice to read your comments, keep it coming, your insights are interesting.

Thank you for explaining what was happening with some of the people... the shop assistant especially... I’m intrigued that people especially the women on the street are so chatty. I am Australian and didn’t understand a word but watched all the way through. To the documentary maker and journalists thank you so much. Explaining and helps me to understand the world makes it seem a little smaller and helps to see from others perspective. A rare glimpse into another place. The contrast between the very isolated rural town and the massive wealth in the city is astounding. Thank you again for opening our eyes. English subtitles would be great if that was possible.
