Absolutely fantastic job again. Another commenter has said this, but you are possibly THE most talented home restorer I have ever seen. It is well within your capabilities to finish the car to show quality yourself in your own garage. I have painted 3 full cars now at home, more or less a panel at a time. 2 of them, an Astra SRi Turbo and a MK3 Golf Gti have been to many shows and have stood up to the scrutiny of professionals. We still own the Astra, I sold the Golf 2 years ago to someone I still see, the cars were painted 7 and 6 years ago and still look good today. I'm sure it is the same in Finland, but a good paint job now in the UK costs £5000, I only got £1500 for the Golf, so economically, I had to do the work myself to make any sense at all. Paint materials and consumables are nowhere near as costly as some might have you believe. You have great skill, but above all, patience, which is the key element when it comes to re-finishing.

I think that the painting would most likely go ok, but the prep work for nice and smooth finishing is most likely out of my league...The shapes in this car is too complex to get it done well...On the other hand, straight surfaces are even more difficult... so you never know... And the price is really the issue here too....

@@GT1900garage I understand your apprehension regarding all the pre-paint work, but it soon comes good with some practice, just be prepared to have to do some panels more than once before they are good enough. If you start with the worst panel, possibly most curves and biggest ripples, and concentrate on getting that as good as you can, everything else will be easier by comparison. You've not much to lose by having a go, you can still hand it to the professionals if you're not happy with the result.

Thanks, yes. This truly has been a learning process. I have regret not to weight all the stuff that I took out from the car, HOWEVER, I do have every single piece of removed metal stored so eventually I can estimate how much new material there is in the car... I have replaced 0,7 mm metal with 1.0mm and usually even 1.25mm steel, so for those parts there will be some weight addition, but it will be compensated multiple time with the removed filler, double/triple sheet metal, mud etc that I have took out...

@@GT1900garage My GT was bought back in 1993. Last year some corrosion was found and a minor repair has been started. Seats has got new cover. Gear box has been changed Getrag 240. Light cover was also corroded and are ready to paint.

Very impressive use of “alternative” parts. This is the root of US hotrodding. I realize that is not your goal. But you do qualify as a 1960’s master of it. Of course you need 4 more pistons but that is a simple affair. Outstanding work and video!

Thanks for patience. This summer has been busy elsewhere, but hopefully now I have time and motivation to stay more in the garage. Most likely we are good with just a light honing. It seems that there is no need to re-bore the cylinders....hopefully next week we will do the closer inspection about the block and crankshaft bearings... if everything is ok...it is just a putting it back together...

You can substitute forged 1.9 rods for the weak cast 2.2 rods, they're dimensionally identical but lighter and stronger. And you can have a 1.9 block bored to 95mm and re-use the original pistons with new rings if you're not set on using the original 2.2 block. My lightly modified 2.2 is so much fun, just changed out the break-in oil and hope to hit the redline soon!

Thanks for the tip...However, I am looking for a better performance on low RPM, with better torque - and I want to keep the 1.9 original and as is... I'm sure that the engine swap will bring more characteristics to the car, and it'll be fun...

@GT1900garage I didn't mean to imply you would have to strip your 1.9 for parts. However, the 2.2 is very rev-happy, and with the stock cast rods 6000RPM is about the limit before they fly apart. A good set of rods from a 1.9 that's pre-1974 will be a direct bolt in and have no negative effect on torque. It will raise the effective redline however! I built my 2.2 with the forged rods and they press right in and work perfectly!

Thank you for the video. Something just popped up on my mind, have you checked the height of your engine blocks? Back in the the day I think it was common to add to the stroke to increase the volume. I have seen this on other brands. It would be a shame if the valvecover got in contact with the hood.

Yes, the block is identical with 2.0E so it will fit... Also there are countless of similar modifications done...So I am pretty confident that this will go smoothly.. Only bigger modifications are the shortening (and balancing) of the drive shaft and modifying the gear lever setup.....

I was impressed that this seems to be the quickest way to restore a fender arch! It's dangerous to push when loosening bolts/nuts ⚠️If there is space, I loosen them by pulling! What do you think? So there are mosquitoes! Are the spirals Japanese mosquito coils? I'm happy to have made a new discovery this time as well.

The Horizon thingy was a bit of a luck. I have a friend with endless knowledge and stock on old car stuff…the motor ‘should’ be ok to fit, drive shaft and gear lever is the only parts that need modifications…

Thanks Sam To be honest, the arch turned out far better than I expected. No filler needed at this point… It will be stock 2.2E This will bring additional 25-30hp and it is enough for me. My plan is not to take her to track, but to curvy Finnish country roads…. Interested to see your 2liter upgrade…

Thanks for the comment. No, it is just a simple Opel Record 2.2 engine with injection. More torque and about +30 horsepower. Nothing radical, just better driving experience imho

I had iron sump on my GT. I did not know there was an aluminum one. I also remember that it was very close to the front axle. Is the front cover on the engine different between 1,9 and 2,2?

Hi Jonas, I have heard, that the aluminium one is originally for GT, but I am not an expert.. It will be close, that is for sure, but the steel sump is from the original engine, so it is proven to fit... Not sure what you mean by front cover? Do you mean the timing chain cover (the one I fixed in the episode) or valve cover?

I have a friend with endless knowledge of cars and huge collections on 70-90s repair panels! Also some luck was involved. I copied the GT arch to cardboard and tried to find a match. Talbot Horizon was almost a 100% match !

Interesting that the block has 20 cast onto it, but it is a 2.2 on the engine number. Maybe they were using 2.0 blocks and stroking them to get 2.2/2.4 engines. If you can find a 2.4 rocker cover it should go even faster....

Yes, the block is identical with 2.0, the extra 0,2 is done by increasing the stroke. Hence also better torque.

Two things: friend with endless knowledge of cars and massive stock of old car parts - and luck I copied the shape of the arch to cardboard and went to his garage. Then he had "one that comes to my mind" and it was almost a perfect fit. But still it was laborous task to make it mimic the other side shapes correctly...

I used to love American HotRod 😉 Epic video, how long does it take to edit your videos? Massive effort no doubt. Have you tried Bilthamber Deox C immersion rust remover ? It does a way better job than any media blaster and isn't expensive.

In early 2000, there were plenty of similar shows, but for us (in Nordic quiet and bit reserved culture), they were a bit too over acted and too drama oriented to be super popular…this videos opening was a bit of a parody of them😎But I binge watched them anyway for the cars😂. Hard to say how much it takes per video, since I edit daily after garage time….but hours and hours……

@@GT1900garage You deserve many more views in my opinion, the effort should be better rewarded. Some channels are very lazy by comparison but are getting similar views, it doesn't seem fair. One thing though, what you are creating I bet you will enjoy looking back at the videos in years to come. That won't necessarily be true for other creators. Funny you should mention Nordic, I was just looking at a holiday in Norway. 😄 I get what you're saying about the over acting, didn't spot it at the time but do now.

I worry about that wheel arch.... I once owned a Talbot Horizon, and they were made from such poor quality steel that it literally rusted away to dust in one year....you could almost hear it rusting.

Actually, the horizon panel was one of the few that was 1.0mm steel! Most of panels I tried was 0.8mm Still, I think this will be so fully submerged with epoxy, so it will last ages… Besides, this is not a Ferrari with pedigree, it’s Opel GT, the rustiest car ever😂😂😂

Sorry, missed this reply : The 2.2 comes from 1985 Opel Record. I believe (not an Opel Expert), that the body of the GT was made in France in some specialized body factory, and assembly was done in Germany. As far as I understand, only branding was changed when shipped to US. To be honest, I don't know if this was sold in US only by brand Buick or was there a Opel GT available in US ? Someone with more knowledge could correct this ?
