Working with the better half of the car. Mostly just to open every cavity and compartment to be exposed for sand (actually granular metal) blasting. It is time to get rid of the ugly Plum color...But this moviestar had few aces still hidden in its sleeves.

I stumbled on this renovation a short while ago. I had a 1975 1900 Manta with a Cologne motor and a fellow officer had an identical white GT to this one while in the armed forces at that time. I regret selling the Manta some years later still!!! There is a divine madness from those who care that put this amount of work into saving a car from the knackers yard. Well done - I'm sure the end product will be beautifull again!!!

Thanks for the comment. Manta and GT were beautiful back then, and even more nowadays !! I am not an Opel expert, what is Cologne engine?
@philleasthouse3791
@philleasthouse3791 8 ай бұрын
@@GT1900garage The 1900 Cologne motor was the German Opel power plant as opposed to the engines fitted in the 1600cc sourced from the joint venture in the UK with GM/Vauxhall. As I understood it it was a relatively rare import into South Africa which was more reliable and powerful than the later 1900cc engines fitted from the GM stable.

@@user-ok3le4vh7c Engineeting wise the running gear geometry was also pretty special. The Manta had one vice: it stuck to the road with incredible grip untill it broke loose. After that all bets were off especially off-camber. 😂😂

I’ve done similar work on cars since 1974. As an expensive “hobby”. I have the shop, equipment, and skills. I am finishing a car now. It will almost certainly be my last. I just don’t think I have another left in me. You know the effort and mental focus required. Your work is top quality. Video very well done. You too will know the time to quit and switch focus on smaller projects. Just subscribed!

Excellent comment. Let me open this a bit. I am a car enthusiast, been that for ages...graving for new projects to start, and some even finished. I have renovated my white Mini and after that I built a new garage form me to accommodate bigger projects . However, I was working as a coach in sports team for 7 years, which consumed my spare time completely. About year ago, I decided that not renew my contract as a coach, and it was time to concentrate to my other hobbies again. I have next project on my mind already.. Most likely it is a smaller project, or it could be bigger...time will show...

After looking at over 50 of them over 2 years, this was the one. Very dry truck. I’ve never restored a Scout or a truck. Always performance cars. I guess once afflicted, always afflicted. Gosh. I gotta run. I need to get out to the shop and start taking this thing apart! Best to you and yours!

Another fantastic instalment in the series! It is always worth the wait. Just read all the comments, don't know why I do because all too often they wind me up. Cancelling subscription because of music. Really? His loss definitely. You are correct, blasting by someone who knows what they are doing is not a problem, where I live in the UK, all the blasters who are any good have retired and not been replaced, it is very sad. As regards acid dipping, this is my humble opinion. Box sections that have not rusted out in 50 years are never going to, until you give them a coat of acid that is. Also, cost is astronomic in the UK as well. Your way is best.

Nice work, i went this way so many times in the past. Nowadays I would perhaps go the route of chemical paint stripping and rust removal after mounting it on a stabilizing subframe. But you never know exactly what would have been better unless you did it. There are so many factors that play a role, working time, costs, loss of material, preservation, sand entering the cavities and so on. I hope you don't see any criticism in this, I know exactly what you're doing here because I've been down this path dozens of times and you have my utmost respect. Greetings from the North Sea in Germany, Stefan

Thanks for the comment Stefan. The reason for sandblasting is simple, cost and local availability. And the guy is very experienced, I trusted the process 100%. Chemical dipping might have some advantages, but for me this was the only option that I even considered. Why would you build a car when you can just buy one...I just love the "making of" part of this

Today I saw #16 and haven’t seen any other episodes. After finishing with episode 16# I wanted to know the history and watched all episodes. I got to give it to you, the devotion you have to restore this opel gt. You must be in love with this car because this car was actually to far gone and simply wasn’t worth restoring anymore. The amount of hours you have put in already and multiply it with a metal worker hour wage which is normally between the €50 and €80 an hour. But it is really nice to see this one saved, because I know these cars and they a beautiful little cars. I used to own a opel Manta type A from 1972. Opels do rust a lot from this era, actually also in the 80’s 90’s and 00. Are you planning to use the CIH engine or a c20xe? (I never liked the cih engines there power band is flat and they are really heavy) The seller said minimal body work? Wow that’s odd for a German normally they tend to tell the truth. Good luck with your restoration, I am subscribed now and will follow your work!

Thanks for comment, and hopefully becoming a regular viewer on my channel. Honestly, I had no other choice but to finish what I have started. After buying a car from Germany, and paying a lot to haul it to Finland (with 2022 prices), there was not an option to let it be and leave the project. I felt miserable for one weekend, when the truth revealed, but then I thought that this might be interesting youtube project to do...My niche is to revive the car from "beyond repairable" state back to its glory! But yes, I do love it now. It is just adorable, yet kind of aggressive looking little european sports car...Besides, one cannot count the labor as currency, when dealing with hobby. I would count this as 450hours quality time with my hobby . About the seller, I think that seller did not quite understood what he sold, but there was some indication that it was not 100% honest process either, so many sudden turns in the process.... Not sure about the engine yet....some ideas to spice it up a bit...lets see... Thank you for a subscription.

@@GT1900garage I think seeing all the little patches you find in the car and hidden trauma if the seller wasn’t the 1st owner he probably couldn’t know what was all wrong with the car. But you are right, this is a hobby project other wise you couldn’t do it. And looking at your work it’s going well. And afterwords you can say I literally rebuild this car with my own hands. And every panel had work done to it. I am guessing that 75% of the car is stil original and the rest is made by your hands. Its also nice seeing you are repairing the panels (and the right way) while most people would just replace the panel. Now I do remember that panels for the gt are very hard to come by. About the engine if you would go for the c20xe (which is a great engine) find the early one these have cillinder heads made by Cosworth and have bigger valves. The later ones have Kolbensmith cilinder heads. The gearbox you need to find one from the opel manta 1.8gs these will fit right to the c20xe and you have a working speedometer. Good luck 👍🏻🍀 keep up the good work :)

How much time and research to find a media blasting room, percentage of savings compared to dipping? Imagine time saved was in scheduling to meet your timeline. Sorry to see that cliffhanger look and the term “stuntman” 😱

I've discovered this channel recently, but have been fillowing the Retropower channel for longer. Those guys covered the reason for moving away from dipping, stating that dipping may neutralise rust, but doesnt replace rusted panels, additionally if the neutralisation isnt done propely the remaining acid will eat the remaining meyal aeay. This is from their rxperience.

The person who blasted, is a friend of mine. He did my Mini 14 years ago, and has a VERY long experience with cars. This was local, easy and cost efficient for me... And yes, the stunt has taken some on screen hits to the front and back ! Good old chasing scenes !!! New episode will reveal the end result of the blasting...

Thanks for the comment. This topic is actually quite well covered in more details in previous comments, but in short : This is purely matter of availability and pricing. I have access to local shop with very experienced operator, who has decades worth of experience with classic cars. Now that my GT is pretty much opened up, so every corner and pocket can be sandblasted, it was a best option to have. Another issue is the cost. Dipping would have cost me soooo much more...

@GT1900garage

VERY good question. As mentioned in several comment replies, This was about 1000% more work than the seller promised...But on the other hand, this would not be a KZbin channel without the huge amount of work to be done. Does it have any sense? No ! But is it fun - Yes. So most likely I would buy the same car, but with a big discount !!

No not sandblasting please! It will warp the car! Why don’t you do paint remover and acid?
@GT1900garage
@GT1900garage 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Yes, it stretch and warps if done wrong. The "masterblaster" has 20+ years of experience in media blasting cars. All horror stories about sandblasting gone wrong, usually indicate lack of understanding and workmanship. Done with correct media, pressure, angle, distance etc makes the difference.

Way to much air pressure while blasting
@GT1900garage
@GT1900garage 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Hmm..Could be, maybe not. It is not the pressure that counts, its the media/pressure flow ratio. Th guy adjusted the pressure and flow constantly, depending what part he was working on.. I'd say it is too much when it damages surface. But I am no expert, guy who did it is though..
