Today's question is about spazzy White Belts who are ripping submissions.
The question comes from Christian who is newer to BJJ, but his biggest worry is about rolling with other White Belts who finish submission too quickly.
He asked, "is this a valid concern? or is this something I need to get used to?"
Of course, White Belts are going to be a little spazzy, but this definitely IS a valid concern.
In this video I'll explain to you how I'd approach training safely as a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu against other White Belts in BJJ, and how to train safely in general, regardless of belt rank.
Hopefully you find these Ideas useful for you.

The knowing you're being submitted but not what you're being submitted with was such a good way to describe it 😂😂😵

I enjoy rolling with the higher belts because they are 'catch and release' rolls. They know when they have me even if I don't. They release the submission before they do any damage, we reset, and we start going again.

Yeah but when white belts roll with each other, it’s so entertaining to watch! I wanna start taking bets on the white belts lol, it’s like a hockey fight with no punches. I could watch it all day, 100x more entertaining than watching the best guys grappling each other in the biggest competitions. Keep training brother, you’ll do fine!

That is a valid concern. I'm a white belt and more experienced white belt got me into armbar and he pulled my arm back way too quickly and we both heard loud cracks in my elbow and then he freaked out and let go. Luckily nothing more serious happened and I could continue and it works fine. But after 4 months it still huts a bit when I fully extend my arm. Another time a white belt was about to body slam me but luckily the instructor was right next to us and he stopped it. The guy was like "oh I forgot you can't body slam in bjj".. I was shocked he was actually about to body slam me in a casual training session even if it would be allowed. Maybe I'm just too nice guy compared to average combat sport practitioner but I when I go for submissions I rather go too careful and miss the submission than risk breaking someone's arm. So what if they escape, I still know in my mind that I would have gotten it if I tried for real.

Personally I verbal tap even if I have a limb free to also physically tap. And I do both of them very vigorously. I yell tap, and I smack hard. I'd rather have to reassure my concerned coach that I'm fine over getting injured. Also feel no shame about possibly tapping something sensitive. Had a guy apologize for tapping on my face once, told him I'm trying to choke you to death, you're allowed to smack my face to make me stop.

I myself am a blue belt. I have been training BJJ for almost 2 years now. One thing I notice in rolling for training and even competitions is to be aggressive but be the only one that knows it. Fight but flow with the moment. Calm mind in combat. Of course I don’t rip submissions in training but I do use aggression to help prepare for war.

Yup, I don’t blame them for being scared. My new white belt boyfriend got injured by one and I recently got a perforated ear drum from a fast and spazzy knee to my ear.

One of the least serious but somehow most painful injuries I ever got was from rolling with another white belt that got...panicky is the only way I could describe it. That was the last day we ever saw him 🤷

-Absolutely a valid concern. I had a white belt break my grip and put me in an arm bar. He did it so hard and fast that I am lucky nothing actually popped. He hyperextended my arm and f'd up my bicep. I couldn't train for 2 weeks. I tried to train the next couple of days and I had to stop because my arm was throbbing so bad and I couldn't grip anything. Finally after two weeks I was able to go back to training. That was the last time I rolled with that guy. -The other thing I learned quick is which guys roll like they are in a competition and which guys roll to actually get better. I have told the guys that roll like they are in a competition, while we are rolling, to calm down and relax. That usually snaps my partner out of their 'kill or be killed' mental state for our roll.

A white belt telling another white belt to "calm down and relax" sounds to me like it would be as effective as telling my girlfriend to calm down and relax when she's yelling at me lol. Has this really worked for you? I feel like I'd take a different approach, like "ay man im a little bitch can you go slow with my weak ass?" because it would be way more disarming. But agree with what Chewie said in the video, I'm just more likely to super quickly verbal tap with guys I fear are fast crankers. The other thing I've done is just let them tap me like 3 times really fast at the start of the roll and usually they realize they own you and they dont roll as hard anymore.

@@shepsean1 Most guys are responsive to it. The asshats that have something to prove don't like being told what to do. When my wife is yelling at me, instead of telling her to calm down, I ask what she needs me to do to help. That takes the wind out of her sails.

I am a huge fan of the verbal tap. When I was a blue belt in a tournament I got caught in a kimura and my arm was stuck under my chest so I was just using my wrist to tap. Turns out I was tapping on a knee pad and had to yell anyway when my shoulder popped.

Bro I’m a blue belt and still I am scared of some of these spazzy white belts, especially the big bulky ones with wrestling backgrounds. It’s ok to be scared lol some of them are crazy, best for me is to control them. And sometimes I get submitted by them no matter what I try and that’s just how it is! Just I just use everything I have and techniques I know but sometimes, these guys are just crazy, so I end up tapping cuz they’re so strong.

Beginning to believe that you should have at least a stripe or two before being cut loose to free roll. Nothing wrong at all with drilling positional sparring, escapes, holding mount etc in the early stages. Virtually every injury I've had has been from a spaz attempting to rip the latest move they learnt off youtube with next to zero control.

Went to a different dojo tonight for my third lesson. Told the lad it was my 5th roll ever. He goes oh yeah I'm a month in all good. Within 3 seconds he went full speed full aggression and threw me over his back with us both standing. Executed it wrong and slammed me straight on my head. Will stick to the main dojo where it's slow and controlled and the blue and purples actually want to teach me. New people rolling with new people is a recipe for disaster and that's not a game I'm going to play without knowing the sport at all yet. I shall now go nurse my throbbing head.

Rightfully so. Many new young white belts have no control. They’re dangerous, and I think they need to adopt to the Gracie system where they can’t do rounds until they’re 2 stripes and can prove they will use control

1) Most injuries with white belts probably occur with improper takedowns, and small joints in sweeps and stuff, and flying cannons of knees and elbows as they move around like maniacs. I don't have data, but I don't think too many white belts are getting their arms ripped off from other white belts, but maybe I'm missing something. 2) Learn to keep your elbows in. It's unlikely that a new, spazzy white belt (probably not a 3 or 4 stripe white belt) will be able to "rip" a sub on you, if you make it a habit to simply keep your arms in when your in mount, side or in someone's guard.

That’s such a shame. There was a new guy in my old gym when I was also a beginner white belt and was trying to end me with such aggression because he was ego bruised by tapping to all the boys. He didn’t manage to tap me and I held my own but I was terrified because I never had someone come at me like that before. I had a panic attack after the roll and soon after he was “dealt” with in the classes after. And I never saw him again. I have a feeling he had some nasty rolls after with the big heavy upper belts, they all saw me as a little sister 😂

Gyms should encourage pairing white belts with higher belts. It’s the best way for noobs to learn the techniques, and higher belts have the experience to keep things controlled. Be humble.

OSS Chew. I have a question. Is it possible that modern jiu-jitsu dojos grade people based on whether the person brings more assets to the gym/dojo? I have had experience at my dojo where older members receive blue belt ahead of me. I’m assuming considering the age, he’s likely to bring more revenue to the dojo as someone who won’t miss membership payments unlike myself whose a lot younger. I feel like my dojo is being treated as business instead of grading members fairly. As if you take some of blue belts from my dojo to other dojos like Gracie’s it won’t be the same as their [Gracie’s] blue belts members. I just received 4 stripe in my white belt and been with them for 2 years. Let me know your thought. Thanks.
