Doesn't help that they wanna drop all support for 10 in like 2 years It's a repeat of windows 7 - Microsoft makes a new OS which is objectively worse (8 and then later 10) - People keep using the actually good and non bloat filled and invasive OS - They drop support for the good OS to force people to upgrade and offer free upgrades Doesn't help that unlike the windows 7 thing, the creation of windows 11 is...entirely non sensical Microsoft considered 10 their "definitive" OS so much to the point there was a plan to rename it to "Windows OS" at one point which never got approved or rejected

The longer a windows version stays, the more overloaded with features it becomes. Windows 10 looked so clean and consistent at the beginning, now it has tons of ads on the taskbar and the UI is a combination of Metro, 2 different redesigns of it and early Windows 11 UI. Look at Windows 11's taskbar: at the beginning, it was a search icon, then it became a small search box, and then it became a big search box empowered by Bing AI with a random picture on it as well. In earlier versions of Windows such as 7 or XP, the desktop would remain the same during its lifecycle.

@LaskyLabs Жыл бұрын
The first thing I do actually is enable key repeat. By default if you hold down a character instead of repeating it, it gives you a choice for different accents. Cringe. You have to enter a terminal command and then restart before you can go aaaaaaaaaa with ease. Another thing I do is if I'm on a MacBook, I have to install a third party app that lets me have separate scroll directions for mice vs track pads. Natural scrolling works best on a trackpad but the classic scrolling works best on a mouse. For some reason apple doesn't do separate settings for trackpads and mice... Chrome OS does. Let me repeat that for those in the back: CHROME. OS. *DOES.* Mad.
@LaskyLabs Жыл бұрын
But, it's a lot less bullshit than Windows. I also disable spotlight search cause it's not really a thing I want or need.
@sodapone Жыл бұрын
@@LaskyLabs Ah yeah, I've gotten the app for separate scroll directions too. I do like holding down keys to bring up accent options though, so I'm keeping that. Most of macOS's issues just come from Apple thinking "this is the way it should be" and not letting their users choose for themselves. Meanwhile most of the crap people hate about Windows comes from Microsoft thinking about it in terms of maximizing profits or market share. Also, I really like Spotlight; specifically its ability to identify things within pictures, so you can search for "phone" in the Finder and it'll show you all your pictures that it thinks contains a phone. It's really convenient for someone like me who has thousands upon thousands of pictures; with that many, no amount of organization is going to help me with finding the exact thing I want sometimes.

Felt in my goddamn soul. I fear the day I got to get a new laptop since mine is a lil shabby and I still wanna try Linux. The hours spent dealing with faulty Windows updates that break whatever I have going on, the pain of setting up VPN with settings Windows flat out hides from you in dozens of tabs to go through to find, the obnoxious additions that clutter your taskbar and start menu, installing ClassicShell to deal with said issues, tip toeing your way as to not trigger the system to either update or undo shit you've done and having to research how to disable Edge with PowerShell are just a few. Thank you Clue for validating my suffering. I feel seen.

Just back up your stuff and do it. Worst thing that happens is you try something new and it doesn't work out. Especially on slightly older hardware where the drivers have been ironed out smooth, it's just such a more peaceful and out of your way experience. In my 14ish years of using it I've only *needed* the terminal a handful of times, 90% of the time I just use it to install software because it's faster and easier than doing it graphically.
@Cobalt985 Жыл бұрын
@@BringMayFlowers I love the terminal. I want anybody who is experimenting with Linux to understand that learning things on the terminal will make it easier in the long run. It's a big reason the OS is so damn powerful. There are usually GUI _alternatives,_ but there are very few times I'll pick the graphical way over the terminal way if I know how.
@BringMayFlowers Жыл бұрын
@@Cobalt985 I'm sure there are -- as stated earlier I find installing packages easier from the terminal* -- but I just don't need them. I set up a Linux Mint dual boot recently (I didn't handle the windows install, just installed mint afterwards) and apart from some trouble with secure boot (turned it off because it doesn't like Linux drivers and then had to turn it back on again for the mint installer to detect windows and install alongside it then disable it again after the install was finished) it went very smoothly. It made me realize just how much faster Mint is to set up, The windows partition still has some stuff that isn't set up yet and installing Mint, updating, installing drivers, uninstalling some preinstalled stuff, installing essential programs, adjusting system settings and Firefox settings all took about an hour (probably would've been a bit less without the secure boot thing). I'm fairly sure it also felt faster to set up than it actually was since the OS isn't fighting you every step of the way (also helps that the Cinnamon desktop environment was designed by an actual sane person).

after switching to linux i have never looked back
@WackoMcGoose Жыл бұрын
@@sprengar As a gaming-focused content creator (this is just my personal channel, my main is separate), I have no choice but to use Windows because a lot of my games of choice are too old to use Wine. But I'm definitely planning to dual boot at some point, especially as a college student majoring in software dev (though surprise surprise, the Zoom-based proctoring explicitly forbids taking tests in Linux).
@yellowsubmarine2261 Жыл бұрын
@@WackoMcGoose Interesting, in my experience the older a game is the more likely it'll work in Wine. I've even had one game that refused to work on anything newer than XP and I got it working in Wine. The biggest issues with compatibility at the moment are anticheat (Valve convinced EAC and battleye to support Wine/Proton but the developer has to enable it) and media foundation (Some games rely on it for cutscenes and I don't know the details but I think they legally can't support it. Again Valve has been getting around the issue by reencoding cutscenes for some games), both problems tend to affect newer games more often. There's still weird quirks sometimes outside of those but they seem to be less common now, it's at the point that I'm more surprised when a game doesn't work first time or with minimal tweaks. If you're planning to dual boot I'd recommend Linux Mint. It's based on Ubuntu so it's quite stable and has a lot of support (and reverses some of canonical's more annoying decisions), the Cinnamon desktop envorinment feels very windows-like as well. Keep in mind that choosing a distro is mostly personal preference and I am very biased since I haven't used much else and haven't felt the need to. For Steam games I'd recommend looking at ProtonDB which is a site where users can post compatibility reports on games, it's limited to just Steam games but can be useful for non-Steam versions as well. Also make sure your games aren't installed on an NTFS partition as that tends to cause problems. For finding save files and modding the Proton prefixes are in SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata. For EGS I've heard Heroic Games Launcher works well but I've never used it. For other games I use Lutris but I wouldn't recommend their install scripts, they almost never worked in my experience. I just use it as a graphical interface for setting up Wine games.

The first thing I do after a new Install is set windows update to notify. Open gpedit and set Windows update to notify mode, to have it more controlled. If you have Windows 10/11 Pro, give it a try, it gives you manual control over Windows Update.
