I used to be all in for digital, but when Sony started pulling purchased movies for their customers, I switched to physical discs for everything. That said, most games these days are just a an access code to stuff you need to download from their servers, so it feels like we’re screwed either way

We're better off w/ physical still, because in like 99% of cases, you can access the game if you have the physical disc unless it's an online-only or online-required game. Physical isn't perfect, but it's better than trusting them at this point.

INCORRECT. In the vast majority of cases, at least 95%, the full game is on the DISC. I've been in a situation in recent years where I lived in an area with extremely crappy internet and had to play almost all my PS5 disc games offline (no updates / no patches, I own 144 PS5 games on disc, 20 of those 144 being PSVR2 disc games) and with the overwhelming vast majority of them the full game was on the disc. In other words, in the vast majority of cases on PS5, the disc is NOT an "access code". Please stop spreading misinformation as it causes a lot of problems.

I use mine for watching DVDs and Blu rays, as well as gaming. Without the disc drive it’s only half as useful.

It's not very simple. There are many gamers, especially new gamers, who don't have a physical library of games or blu-ray movies, so the disk drive provides little to no value. All you have to do is walk into any GameStop to see that physical games are dying.

Disc drives are needed to prevent companies from shafting us on prices for content, but also because when you buy games online you don't "own them" (it's a license) and if we move to an all-digital future, companies will put games online then remove/edit them AND memory will cost way more under the guise of "inflation" than the offset used games provide. If you don't use a disk drive for games anymore, it's very useful for Blu Ray movies, because having the movie on disk means OWNING it, instead of being allowed to watch it as long as it is online....

but when most of the time the disc is just a serial in a box with some outdated version of the game that you might as well just download anyway when the update is about the same size as the game. I think discs are done. Just get over it because they aren't coming back and while holding a physical copy of something makes you feel you own that. You still only own a licence whether its on a disc or online. We lost the format wars I'm afraid. Consumers gave up all the power to sell/trade/own their media for convenience. I gave up on discs on my own PC decades ago so I'm impressed consoles have hung on for so long. Time to let go.

The disc now also act as license to play the game. Most modern games require you to download and install the games when the console detect the license from disc.

I haven’t bought a physical game in more than 15 years. All my PC games, Xbox series X games, Xbox one games, Switch games, and PS4 games were digital purchases. I’ve collected video games and video game consoles since the 1980s. At one point I had 15 video game systems and hundreds of games. It takes up too much space and it’s inconvenient. How often do YOU go back and replay games you bought 20 years ago? Digital games are WAY easier to manage.

My opinion on disk drives in consoles is in the minority: I've gone mostly digital when it comes to media. I used to own LARGE collections of physical media. But after several moves and a fire that destroyed one home, I've been digital for over 10 years now with no regrets. Not everyone wants to manage huge collections of physical media. There are downsides, two of which I just mentioned. So, I may just get the all digital X Box Series X.Though it's good that the disk drive version remains for those who prefer it.

Consumers made the wrong choice. Selling my used games for 50-75% of the original price when I bought a new game was what made physical games good.

Gamers should always want to have a disc drive. The following are just few of the many reasons: 1. Most digital games are more expensive than its physical version at release. 2. Digital games can’t be trade in for money or credits. 3. Even if you don’t enjoy the game or got bored of it you are stuck with the digital version with no other options. 4. There is no physical box arts or prints to hold or admire. 5. Limited collector edition almost always have physical discs. 6. Without physical media, there won’t be shops like GameStop or RadioShack. Browsing physical game stores is part of the fun experience of being a gamer. 7. Sony and Microsoft are deliberately phasing out the physical games so they can fully control and manipulate the game sales process, controlling prices and eliminate 2nd hand markets. Games will only become more and more expensive for all players, if they succeed. Gamers should fight to retain the physical media.

The joke will be on them in the end because the EU will make a ruling that will say they need to start allowing other digital stores on their consoles if they get rid of physical media, Then at that point they won't be getting full subsidisation via software for the console. This will hurt Sony and Nintendo more because Microsoft is all about selling servers as the end game. Sony and Nintendo better wake up fast and double down and prioritise physical media and true exclusive software or it will be over for them.

I'd like to see the white version with disk support. Disc and disc drives will never be rendered obsolete. Physical ownership is very important. Digital ownership is no substitute. I have learnt that lesson several times. If I am to go through the trouble of purchasing a console, it better be able to read disks or cartridges. I must be able plug in my console into a TV, setup the console (without needing to connect to the internet to activate the device), insert the disc or cartridge and be able to play the game without any restrictions. The PS5 and Switch can do this, Microsoft is fighting to keep disposable AA batteries alive, but are quietly increasing unnecessary dependance on their company, following in the trails of other companies whose names I need not mention, taking away the disc drive will be another way take away control from the customer. The disc version is still available (for now, but will soon quietly disappear, if customers don't wake up and start supporting physical media again. The next corporate step will be to relinquish digital ownership entirely and replace that with subscriptions. Can you imagine in a few months or a few years from now not being unable to purchase games in physical and digital form? It will most definitely happen if we do not fight to keep physical media alive. With physical media the customer has control over assets they have purchased, with digital media the company owns it, and the customer is only leasing it until the company decides to take it away. I see it this way, while I do not expect Microsoft to disappear anytime soon, in that unlikely event, I should still be able to fully utilize my device. I believe this very passionately that it should be put into legislation.

If you understand how modern games are developed and how they work on modern consoles, you'd know that it's not a stupid question. PC players began ditching disc drives 20 years ago. Because we know that the data contained on said discs is, more often than not, useless. 20 years from today, if you want to revisit Cyberpunk 2077 for example, are you going to want to play what was pressed onto discs? Of course not. Because it's an unfinished game on that disc. You need the eleventy hundred patches and updates to have a functional product.

The xbox 360 digital library that has been permanently closed and when microsoft decides to revoke access to the digital games is why the disc drive is still needed for the consoles. I still buy and support new and used copies of physical media whether they are movies, music and video games. I don't know if anyone has reverse engineered the modern consoles game discs to bypass the drm and licenses on the discs since there is a possibility of it happening if someone is willing to go that way route to remove the drm from the discs.

@@TomO-nx1bd I live in France and it's the same problem : Micromania (it belongs to GameStop now..) sold more and more goodies like Pop Funko and this shelf is getting bigger and bigger every year .. I don't know the situation in USA with GameStop but when you sell your physical games, here in France, you barely have... few euros and used games are nearly the same price as new games. One other reason why I don't go there anymore : for security purpose (trouble with thieves) all NEW physical games are open and games are taking away.... Some of my friends love to go to Micromania, like a "pilgrimage"...But you never know if you really buy a new game or... a used game in "very good condition". Me, I don't have time to go there (we all have a life and a job... ). I'm pretty sure that in 10 /15 years, we will buy our consoles through internet order sales and play games with a server (at least for big cities, of course).

I own a digital PS5 slim, launch disc drive PS5 and a 1TB series S (black). I traditionally like physical disc drives and physical copies of games. But this year I preordered all my usual games digitally (2K25, Madden 25, awaiting COD on game pass). Im starting to get use to digital more than I would like. Probably has something to do with me being in school and being able to predownload the game while in class so it's ready for me to play once I get home. This probably sounds small to most people but I hardly have time to get groceries....so making it to my local GameStop to grab my games is asking a lot right now. I'm still pro disc drive and physical games. Both Sony and Microsoft providing options for both is dope and as of now digital works for me.

Physical games make no sense these days. They're not like DVDs where the media is stored on the disk, it's just an access key that makes you download the game anyway. Current Bluray discs can only hold 25GB-50GB, while most AAA games these days are 100GB+.

I love playing digitally on my playstation 5 & xbox series x because I ran out of space on my gaming shelf plus it’s very convenient not worrying about games being sold out in stores. I rather have a disc drive console because a lot of games get delisted digitally so I buy xbox 360 games physically. I like to have both options i’m enjoying xbox 360 forza horizon I got it on amazon for $40 used mint condition no scratches plays brand new which was really surprising side note i’ll never buy an all digital console don’t limit yourself.🥂✌🏾😎

I’ve never touched the optical drive. Every game I got for my Xbox one was digital. Every game I got for my PS4 was digital. I’m an adult. I don’t trade games with friends. When we identify a game we want to play together we all just buy the game.

@@davidhamid8025 which puts WAY more money in the pocket of GameStop than your own. If they buy a game from you for $2 (one that you paid $60 for) they sell it for $10. If you sell it yourself on Craigslist or Facebook or whatever, you’ll get a much better price. Plus, they make even more on you because when you buy the game from them … they spent 45 to buy it from their distributor (or whatever) then they sell to you for $60. People like you are how they actually stay in business. They make a lot of money from that system. So, you can be taken advantage of by GameStop, or jump through hoops to get 2x-5x the value on the games. If you go that route … buy the day it comes out, sell within a month of it coming out. You’ll get close to full value if you sell to a person rather than GameStop. But, I don’t resell games. And, wouldn’t even if it was an option (since it’s all digital now). I’d rather give them to someone who I thought would enjoy it.

It’s a lot more than 5% of consumers in the gaming market that still want disk drives. The movie/ TV market may be around that number but game preservation and backwards compatibility is a big market of game consumers. Having the disk drive is still highly desired.

If only they added an nvme slot and a type c port 😮 instead of those crappy expensive proprietary storage cards they removed the disc drive but they don't add qol changes to the hardware

With PC you can just plug in an USB drive and load old games from it. That method does not work with consoles. Don't get me wrong, I buy my games digital on the Series, myself. But with 360 store shut down and PS3 store getting thinned down, people start to rebuy physical media.

So i have a digital xbox series. Yes i believe they absolutely need a disc drive because microsoft is the only place you can buy games and they.keep the proces super high most of the time

yes... it needs a disc. look I'm all for easy digital on my PC, but! you can't let physical media die. that's just not right

I know Xbox is still going to use physical media because they made the galaxy black series x with a disc drive

This is a hard pass for me. Game consoles without the ability to play physical games/media rip all ownership from the consumer and are not worth it. This is a ploy to keep people trapped in subscription services and digital games that can be taken away from them at any time. Not worth it.
