The way I see it is the body is an expression of the soul itself, and the body has this really LOUD function that comes due to the body being concerned with its own survival, while the soul isnt concerned with that because it is eternal. The soul in this situation gets put on the backburner. The soul gently whispers while the ego loudly screams. So yeah it is a bit like taming an animal, or disciplining a child...but exercizing for the soul, eating for the soul-very valid notions. The way we communicate with the soul is through our intention. Through our attitude and intention, every physical action can become "for the soul". Or it can become for the ego or the flesh or for some destructive thing, or whatever whatever whatever. And through this method (AT VERY ADVANCED SPIRITUAL LEVELS) even something perceivably damaging in it of itself, say, smoking a cigarette, for example, can be something for the soul or something which strenthens your connection with God. Im not suggesting we go smoke cigarettes to connect with God.
