Experience for the first time New Year's Eve on the Bay Area's Rapid Transit system, as this short sampling of rides and train arrivals takes place well before the late-night festivities around the bay. Shot on New Year's Eve 2011 (going into 2012), journey through some of BART's transfer and more high-traffic stations, beginning with a 6-car Richmond train pulling into Coliseum/Oakland Airport Station in Oakland from San Leandro.
After that train are these rides and train arrivals in the order they were shot:
(1) 8-car Daly City train traveling between Glen Park and Balboa Park stations in San Francisco*
(2) 10-car Pittsburg/Bay Point train arriving at Balboa Park Station in San Francisco
(3) 9-car San Francisco Airport/Millbrae train departing San Bruno Station for San Francisco Int'l Airport - with bonus departure for Millbrae Station
(4) 9-car San Francisco/Pittsburg Bay Point train pulling into San Francisco Int'l Airport Station from Millbrae**
(5) 8-car Daly City train entering Powell Street Station in Downtown San Francisco*
(6) 10-car San Francisco Airport/Millbrae train pulling into Powell Street Station in San Francisco - with Pittsburg/Bay Point and Daly City arrivals following soon after
All seven of these segments were shot in the morning, several hours before thousands of people would flock to San Francisco for the city's annual New Year's Eve fireworks show.
On this night only (12/31), trains run beyond their usual midnight shutdown until 3am, but with a catch. Richmond and Pittsburg/Bay Point trains traveling through San Francisco -- based off 2010 and 2011 scheduling -- stop at Montgomery Street Station, but NOT Embarcadero. Fremont and Dublin/Pleasanton trains stop at Embarcadero, but NOT Montgomery Street. BART has utilized this to ease overcrowding at these two stations, the closest of the four downtown stops to San Francisco's Embarcadero waterfront, where the fireworks occur.
Although these seven segments were shot in 2011, the special New Year's Eve late-night scheduling mentioned and light morning crowds around the BART system are what you'll see almost every year.
