David Slinn My Mom had a special container for saving bacon grease. A metal container with a lid, with an inset strainer to filter out crumbs. You can always find one on eastBay

The biggest risk in making this, is that if you make a tiny mistake, you'll get "pasta for Zuul" instead, a demon gate opens in your fridge, the food dissappears and you are left with all the dirty pots and pans and no dinner.

hans, I was taught to wash greens three times before cooking. The first wash is really allowing them to soak for about ten minutes in very salty water to kill any bugs that might have hitched a ride from the garden. It’s surprising how much sand clings to greens.

I've never been out on a New Year's Eve that wasn't the pits and I'm 65, but I've had many NYEs at home curled up with my dog or cat and enjoyed myself without the stress of having no one to kiss at midnight. 🙂🎉🎶💕🖖

I am so sorry. I am not mentioning to go to a place of religion, as sometimes that isn't the answer. You can try and see if that works out. There has to be somewhere, perhaps the animal shelter, that will welcome you to volunteer even if one day a week. I will pray that you find someone.

Chef John, you missed a great opportunity to reduce food waste here - I use Swiss chard stems like celery. Slice and sauté it at the beginning of the recipe with the other aromatics. The stems add nutrition and color to the dish.

I went to Naples earlier this year, only for a day on a trip in Italy. Everyone else on my trip got pizza, but not me: being the Dean Martin fan that I am, I wanted to go beyond the pizza that hits your eye and have the pasta fazool that makes you drool! Interesting linguistics, I read that word as "faool" which is Arabic for "bean" (pronounced like "fool") and this dish does contain beans.

Actually, hoppin john is rice and black-eyed peas. But I guess this would be pretty close in soup form. Maybe that's why they both are supposed to be good luck.
