The complete Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960s and is now performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season." Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, NFRZ. Fun video, as always. The videos where you're out exploring are my favourite. Saint Petersburg would be my ideal Christmas destination and that's likely in part due to the Nutcracker and the winter scenes in the Doctor Zhivago film. I don't understand how you don't associate the Nutcracker with Russia. The original short story might be German, but it was Tchaikovsky as composter and Lev Ivanov as choreographer that made the Nutcracker ballet world famous. If it weren't for their adaptation, the Nutcracker would probably be just an obscure little Christmas story and not a Christmas tradition celebrated in dance around the world.

Well, Russia just doesn't share this western Christmas obsession with the Nutcracker, is all.

@@dvv18 Yeah. I was interested in Roman's thoughts on the Nutcracker. It could be due to his "provincial" upbringing, that he wasn't exposed to the ballet. Or maybe it's just his preference for western pop culture. But, this lack of "Russian obsession with the Nutcracker" seems contrary to what was depicted in the video. The Nutcracker motif of the Christmas fair could have been a promotion of the Mariinsky Theatre's Nutcracker production for all I know. Anyway, my questioning of Roman's thoughts on the Russianess of the Nutcracker isn't so much a negative judgment of him or the Russian population, but praise for Russian's contribution to western arts. It's something to be proud of.

@@david_walker_esq I'm pretty sure his opinion is right there in the video: to him, it's a part of that wholesale adoption of western Christmas extravaganza onto the post-Soviet Russian soil. With some minor tweaks, of course.

@@dvv18 Obviously, I'm curious to hear more of his opinion. The Nutcracker goes back to the reign of Tzar Alexander III. The Soviets and the modern Russian state have nothing to do with its significance. Roman always provides interesting commentary and a different perspective on Russia than what I'm typically exposed to in North American and other western media. It was fun to see him visit the Hermitage Museum in his video last summer. I can watch art historians, political historians and tour guides touring the Hermitage and the grounds of the Winter Palace online, but I also appreciate the value in Roman's "outsider" perspective. There's no need to be dismissive of my interest a KZbinr's video content. If your opinion is so important, make a video for your own channel.

@@david_walker_esq I consider my opinion too important to take your suggestions as to how I should share it into any account at all. Also, Roman is obviously not too keen on sharing his opinion about Mr. Tchaikovsky's oeuvre. So my opinion is the only thing you're stuck here with, at least for a while: Russians are not Christmas-crazy about _The Nutcracker_ It's just a fact of life. Only ballet and musical pros and aficionados give any fuck about it at all. And it's only thanks to the westernization of the winter holidays that it is shoved down the general public's throats. Along with other gay musicians' Christmas music from past centuries - as it was demonstrated in Roman's video, too.

I live in Michigan. We do everything on frozen water in the winter. Have carnivals, drive vehicles on it…it’s funny to me to see a Russian amazed that people walk on the river.
