Hey, the Nutcracker came from a Russian...Tchaikovsky! It's popular worldwide because it is beautiful. And don't get alcohol poisoning. We'd miss you tons! Have a wonderful holiday. Many good wishes for 2022.

This from wikipedia: "Although the original production [of the Nutcracker ballet] was not a success, the 20-minute suite that Tchaikovsky extracted from the ballet was. The complete Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960s and is now performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season." I'm sure it's taken hold as a Christmas theme in Russia because Russians are pround of their native son.

10:14 The Nutcracker is the 19th Century ballet by the very Russian, Tchaikovsky. T-chai went to school in St. Petersburg and The Nutcracker first premiered in the city. Tchaikowsky died in 1893 and is buried in the Tikvhin Cemetery in St. Petersburg. Maybe you should do a vlog about the cemetery. Lots of history and famous folks are buried there. (actually if you search that cemetery on KZbin you'll see someone at the Real Russia channel has done it already).

I'm from the Netherlands here, yes you can walk on ice in some places where the water canals are narrower as they freeze quicker and it does freezxe usually once a year when it gets to the coldest week of the year usually -10c or so doesn't get much colder and doesn't stay frozen for long sadly, we had a cold spell a couple weeks ago there was plenty of ice on small ditches i almost tried myself but was alone in the night and no one around bit too dangerous XD

One trick you can do with mulled wine (or red wine with a small tied cloth bag with cloves and stick of cinnamon inside) is if you heat it up in a vat and add about four cut chillies and add some ginger, it gives a warm tingling sensation right through your insides long after you've drunk it.

That tree looked amazing and well worth the trip. I bet most of the cost was in taking down and transporting such a huge tree. Not to mention making sure it doesn't fall down on anybody. This was actually really cool man. Never in my life have I seen or been able to see a Russian Christmas celebration yet. It would be nice to show up in Russia/SPB during that week someday for me. I also had no idea the Russians like their hot wine. Same big thing in Germany - the Glühwein. I thought it was their thing.

Well, the Russian word for ”mulled wine" is "глинтвейн" ("glintvein"), which was borrowed 300 years ago from the then German "glühend Wein". So…

When it gets cold in the Netherlands people do ice skate on the canals and also flood sports fields so people can skate on them. It is quite rare for it to be cold enough to do it though.

Your hometown weather is more similar to Minneapolis where I live. St Petersburg is a bit warmer then, and in sure it's hella lot safer. Minneapolis is back to being called Murderapolis. I envy your location.

Roman, go check out the New Holland island. It's probably the best public space in all of St. Pete and maybe Russia. Best experienced in summer months, although I'm sure something great is there in winter as well.

The alcohol in the mulled wine largely cooks off, so that may be why the kids were having some. You can also add spirit (brandy or rum) to the mulled wine to make sure you get your kick ("Glühwein mit Schuß" in Germany). Happy New Year to you, Roman!

When you mentioned the Ded Moroz I remembered catching a livestream on youtube of guys(and gals) dressed like that on jetskis around a month or two ago going through St Petersburg's canals before they froze over. It looked like some sort of event there were boats going ahead and behind them with cameras. I don't know if it was for a commercial or just a stunt like the bus. That fire busker was great and the tree at the end was beautiful. I do think it was funny touring the european booths listening to american music in a russian christmas fair. Have a great new year!

Exotic foods do well at fairs. Here in New York, literally anything goes, any food from anywhere. If it fits in your hands so much the better. Those foods you flashed up on the screen instead of a burger would sell fast! Burgers not as fast.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, NFRZ. Fun video, as always. The videos where you're out exploring are my favourite. Saint Petersburg would be my ideal Christmas destination and that's likely in part due to the Nutcracker and the winter scenes in the Doctor Zhivago film. I don't understand how you don't associate the Nutcracker with Russia. The original short story might be German, but it was Tchaikovsky as composter and Lev Ivanov as choreographer that made the Nutcracker ballet world famous. If it weren't for their adaptation, the Nutcracker would probably be just an obscure little Christmas story and not a Christmas tradition celebrated in dance around the world.

Well, Russia just doesn't share this western Christmas obsession with the Nutcracker, is all.
@david_walker_esq
@david_walker_esq 3 жыл бұрын
@@dvv18 Yeah. I was interested in Roman's thoughts on the Nutcracker. It could be due to his "provincial" upbringing, that he wasn't exposed to the ballet. Or maybe it's just his preference for western pop culture. But, this lack of "Russian obsession with the Nutcracker" seems contrary to what was depicted in the video. The Nutcracker motif of the Christmas fair could have been a promotion of the Mariinsky Theatre's Nutcracker production for all I know. Anyway, my questioning of Roman's thoughts on the Russianess of the Nutcracker isn't so much a negative judgment of him or the Russian population, but praise for Russian's contribution to western arts. It's something to be proud of.

@@david_walker_esq I'm pretty sure his opinion is right there in the video: to him, it's a part of that wholesale adoption of western Christmas extravaganza onto the post-Soviet Russian soil. With some minor tweaks, of course.
@david_walker_esq
@david_walker_esq 3 жыл бұрын
@@dvv18 Obviously, I'm curious to hear more of his opinion. The Nutcracker goes back to the reign of Tzar Alexander III. The Soviets and the modern Russian state have nothing to do with its significance. Roman always provides interesting commentary and a different perspective on Russia than what I'm typically exposed to in North American and other western media. It was fun to see him visit the Hermitage Museum in his video last summer. I can watch art historians, political historians and tour guides touring the Hermitage and the grounds of the Winter Palace online, but I also appreciate the value in Roman's "outsider" perspective. There's no need to be dismissive of my interest a KZbinr's video content. If your opinion is so important, make a video for your own channel.
@dvv18
@dvv18 3 жыл бұрын
@@david_walker_esq I consider my opinion too important to take your suggestions as to how I should share it into any account at all. Also, Roman is obviously not too keen on sharing his opinion about Mr. Tchaikovsky's oeuvre. So my opinion is the only thing you're stuck here with, at least for a while: Russians are not Christmas-crazy about _The Nutcracker_ It's just a fact of life. Only ballet and musical pros and aficionados give any fuck about it at all. And it's only thanks to the westernization of the winter holidays that it is shoved down the general public's throats. Along with other gay musicians' Christmas music from past centuries - as it was demonstrated in Roman's video, too.
