Believe it or not, here is part of New Years Eve at Times Square - from 1957 to 1958, with Guy Lombardo!!!! Seems very low-tech, compared to what we have today!!

This was when going to Times Square for New Year's Eve was an organic thing to do and not commercialized. No pens, no crime. A totally different time.

I am surprised Guy Lombardo did New Year's Eve 1957-58 at the Roosevelt Grill. I had assumed every time he performed on New Year's Eve at the grand ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel every year from the early 1930's until his death.

We must keep in mind that the classier shows like this one were geared towards much older audiences (which, by the way, frowned upon rock'n'roll as it was gaining popularity among many teenagers and quite a few twentysomethings even back then). The class that more traditional forms of popular music present (some of it jazz based, I presume; I am not a musicologist and can only speculate) was like a "balsam" to their ears. Younger audiences had to wait until the 1970's to get their own New Year's Eve show to have whatever suited their tastes
