Wow, Big Wong is still there...I'm in California now, but I grew up about 4 blocks from this place on Mulberry St.. I remember when Big Wong first opened over 40 years ago when I was a kid. I think they are a branch of the other restaurant Wong Kee or the cooks from that place opened Big Wong...Loved eating at both of these places back then.

I notice u order the various congee porridge a lot when u are at a Chinese restaurants. As I get older I like to prefer congee over any kind of rice ( easier to digest ). BTW welcome back home to NYC from viva Las Vegas !

hello ftdan, big wong is a restaurant for 40 years - it is nyc best - word of mouth - always the best one and safe one to mention to your friends to eat. the door closes at 9pm and it is cash only same as the bakeries all over chinatown. the restaurants for family style dinner are all cash / credit places. but if big wong is listed in the zagat as a $ in cost - may be soon it should change to credit also restaurant. in my visits, coming from new york, never had a place like big wong in los angeles or san francisco - the two other outside places with chinatown. the roast pork is always hang by the window while the steam of the porridge is cooking. elle for visa mc for visits

Great to see another city Danny The Medic, your bang on re what to expect in cheap eats v mid/high end restaurants and the expectations and experience so we need to temper expectations accordingly. Only been to NYC a few times for work and we just gravitate around the hotel restaurants but we really should venture out more often.

I don’t understand how that rice roll can come out cold when it’s steamed. The microwaving it was so funny.
@dannythemedic2 жыл бұрын
well, a reasonable explanation is that it was made, then it sat somewhere not heated and then they served it to me without reheating. Usually these are made on a large griddle like surface like pancakes or crepes using a rice based batter. as these solidify, the filling is placed on one end and the thing is flipped over so the filling is in the rice roll. the cooked roll is then placed on a plate, and covered, and then placed in a steamer to stay warm before serving...

If you can obviously depending on yourself is the surefire best likelihood of success. I don't think of it as liberal or conservative more like how comfortable you are relying on others and just dealing with things the way they make them. Good video as always Danny.

I notice you didn't get the fried dough when you said the congee didn't have enough salt for flavor. That's the typical Chinese breakfast combo in Hong Kong.

I Confer with everything you say in this Review. The Juk looks so Enticing. The Cherng Fun looks ok maybe a bit thick and Chunky, however some like it that way but Cold not Good. One of my Favorite Dishes is Bow Yu Juk with Yow Jar Gwey. I put a little Hong Cho with my Juk like you do with Yu Chee Tong. Great Video Danny Thank You very much.

DANNY THE MEDIC- There is a Chinese Cantonese cafe near me on 104th Ave. and if you SPECIFY "Fatty Pork" they will give you only that in your soup!!
@llee8882 жыл бұрын
I watched a few of your videos and enjoyed all of them. One thing I couldn't help but noticed: You kept saying roast pork but what I saw was BBQ pork on your dish. I see that in this episode even the Big Wong's menu wrote contradictory names - BBQ pork in Chinese (叉燒) and Roast Pork in English (Roast Pork), see #2 & #25. Can't blame anyone - even a Chinese restaurant in Angels Camp, CA, served us Hot and Sour Soup and insisted it's West Lake Minced Beef Soup. I suspect the culinary school played a practical joke on its students.

i know why you say what you are saying, but guess what? the PORK IS ACTUALLY ROASTED in an oven, not BBQed on a grill! LOLOLOLOL

Big Wong used to be my favorite "comfort food" place, but the quality definitely went downhill. For me, I don't go, or even recommend this place anymore. The worst offender was the congee. It was getting increasingly watered down. It contained less and less rice -- that on my last try, before I gave up, it was just a thick white broth. I am going to speculate that they were using cornstarch, as there wasn't enough rice to thicken it.

I love your reviews, I disagree with your price service analogy. for example Wah Fung # 1 charges $8 for Char sue or Roast Duck and their food is outstanding. They have crowds lined up all day. If Big Wong was outstanding rather than just average the waiters would get 100 orders a day with $ 3 + tips

If I have to ask for my tea to be refilled, that automatically cancels the server's tip. That is the biggest sin a server can commit.
@dannythemedic2 жыл бұрын
It happens to me all the time, because I eat in cheap places. In the video I have called Vegas most expensive chinese, they refill my ass off, even if it is 70%, they come and bring it back to 100%, which such service is also mentioned at the end of that video
@dannythemedic2 жыл бұрын
Also I have no issue with being the director of the meal, I will still tip even if I have to ask for my tea refilled, as long as the waitress follows my orders and does it right... I once cancelled the servers tip one occasion where after my order was taken, the server vanished. the food runners bought me my food, but the server was nowhere to be found... even at the end of the meal, I looked around, still nowhere to be found.. so I walked up to the business section and asked THEM for the check, and paid it right there sans tip....
