New York City Hoods - The South Bronx - Worst Section of the Worst Borough

Today we are in the Bronx New York, and not just any part of the Bronx but the infamous South Bronx which is the poorest section of the poorest borough in New York City. By poor we mean the highest percentage of the population living below the poverty level. 30% of Bronx residents live below the poverty level but that number swells to 37% in the South Bronx.
Violence and crime goes hand in hand with poverty and there is no exception in the Bronx. The Bronx is the most violent borough in New York City. The rate of violent crime in the Bronx is almost twice of Brooklyn and Manhattan (which includes Harlem) and nearly three times that of Queens and Staten Island.
You'll notice in this video that The Bronx of today isn't anything like that of the 1970's/1980's when the South Bronx was an urban wasteland. Long gone are the days of vacant lots, and abandoned buildings as far as the eye can see. Gentrification efforts have been ramping up but the same problems of living in urban America persist. What does the future hold for this part of the city? Does it continue to gentrify or revert back to the slums of the 1970's like in the Charles Bronson movies? Also what do you think of this area? Livable or Miserable? Please let us know in the comments!

People give the Bronx so much shit and I think its really unfair to the BX. I DO understand why so many people have the view of the BX that they do and its certainly rough in areas of the Bronx. In fact, there's parts of the Bronx I try to avoid altogether but my aunt lives in Morissiana and I have no choice but to go visit her. What I'm trying to say is that the Bronx also has some BEAUTIFUL areas that I think get really overlooked. And people forget so much of the popular culture and some of the most influential people come from the Bronx (Edgar Allen Poe (had residency here), Stan Lee (Creator of Marvel), Hagan Daz ice cream, Ralph Lauren, Hip-hop and doo wop is from the Bronx, just to name a few). Either way, I enjoy your videos!

As you say it looks nothing like it did in the 80s. I live off Fordham Road in 86 and going through the South Bronx was apocalyptic. I remember the boarded windows with happy family images painted on the boards, giving an creepy bitter irony as they ghosted the South Bronx with images of a happy past. What I’m seeing now looks gorgeous in contrast, notwithstanding the current issues you mention. Thank you, this video gives me great joy to see the life affirming efforts of the human spirit being rewarded. Amazing what communities can do when they are United in a cause to change their environment in partnership with good caring governance. In contrast the damage being done by neo liberalism is destroying communities the world over. I spent 30 years living in the UK and left in 2022 and saw a great community based country go down the sewer rapidly to become impoverished especially outside the London region. Very sad indeed.
@fatty3383

Your definitely right about the UK..once upon a time communities did stick together and has steadily declined.. probably been that way since the end of the 90s...it be interesting to know what the run down places were like before it became like it is and what year it changed.
