She's absolutely right in her video game analogy. I cycled across the states last month and finished in New York City, I loved that contrast after fields and canal paths through Ohio and New York state. I welcomed the energy of the city after the calmness of the countryside.

Chill video. I liked the vibe of this one--safe, yet inspired. Maybe it's roadie vibes, but I'm roadie so I dig it. I like the comparison of the cities. I started cycling in LA, and now I live in Davis up in NorCal. I understand a lot of the observations she shared about cycling in LA. Can't wait to go back and try more climbing. Hope to make it out to NYC one day too--it's a dream to ride through those streets. I like cyclists that talk. It's easy to get caught up in the self on rides, especially if riding solo happens more than group rides. Not every ride needs to be an attack on the streets, for PR's, or heart rates. I looked at her Strava for this ride, and she did 86.83 miles this day. My guess is that Terry only ended up filming sub 20 miles. If you think about how long it takes to ride 20 miles, then the amount of talking in this video is just another casual conversation on the saddle.

NYC just seems like a cyclist paradise... Everything seems flat and the way to get where you want is always full of attractions and nice thrill. You should come to Brazil, like Minas Gerais, which is full of inclination everywhere, it's generally a very athletic experience and the declines are sick!

I've been in Austin for over 4 years now (former New Yorker of 7 years) and I completely agree with her saying how it can be more dangerous biking in a place like LA than it is in NYC. Both Austin and LA are built for cars and motorists in these type of cities think they're the center of the universe. They don't think to look for pedestrians and cyclists, they creep up into crosswalks trying to turn right on reds, etc. In New York, pedestrians and cyclists have the power.

Living in a hilly neighborhood helps a lot. If you go to Harlem and Washington Heights, the climbs there are short but quite phenomenal. Gradients consistently reach 4% or more. Riding a geared bike is fun, but don't be afraid to switch it up by riding a fixed or a freewheel (single speed). Run a 46/16 ratio if you're newer to riding. If you want a long gradual climb, try going up St.Nicholas from 125th all the way up to 163rd. It's a very subtle hill but you will feel it.

Trying to pass the fedex truck on the right at such slow speeds was needlessly dangerous. People get caught below these trucks all the time. In Berlin we have so many ghost bikes because of crashes with trucks. I tend to pass trucks on the left with lots of space between me and the truck, or I wait until it’s safe.
