E and F were express on the same tracks right into NYC then F turned on 6 Ave and the E turned on 8 Ave. E went all the way to Brooklyn and Rockaway. Before 9/11.

Not a NYC native but used to go into the city with my Dad in the 60s and 70s to watch the Yankees or the Mets, and sometimes to the Museum of Natural History to see the dinosaurs and the planetarium. We always rode the subway out from Penn Station and back. Been in San Diego for 30 years now, but was privileged to ride the subway again in 2015 with my then 6 year-old daughter, to see the Statue of Liberty and the Upper West side on the 1, C and E trains. The games and museum were all great, but the subway was always just as much of a thrill -- loved the sound of the trains approaching the platform with a low rumble, and then a sudden boom! as they came out of the tunnel. The one thing I never got to do was sit in the front and see all the stuff between stations. So these videos are a major treat! THANK YOU folks for giving me that experience. Tho it would still be great to actually ride up front one time with my kids!

This is the train I take to work every day and have been taking it since I went to high school when I was 14. I am 46 now and still riding the good ol' F. I take it from Ave X into the city. What fascinates me is stuff like 29:08 where there is an abandoned tunnel. I guess there is where the famous "mole people" hang out. Also what's interesting ("frustrating" is a better word to use when I'm actually ON the train) is why the stoppage or slowing down at parts when it was clear there was nothing in front of this train? (I know traffic, other lines crossing, etc. cause it but not on this ride. It must have been a weekend or something because it wasn't very crowded and nothing was in front of this train). Anyway, these are really cool vids!
@wtaenyc2 жыл бұрын
We appreciate you and we are happy that you get the chance to experience a train you’ve ridden for so long/to this day. The video was recorded during the week but we have to say, although we may not have seen any reason for the delays, the cbtc system is in charge of how fast the train is allowed to go. The train operator has to obey whatever the system is saying as the system is able to read the “traffic” way ahead of the operator’s line of sight and therefore, causing them to slow down for what appears to be for no reason.

@wtaenyc2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing that history. This information is great for all of us to know and understand how far the system has come
@anonymous37387 ай бұрын
Originally, the Culver Line north of Ditmas Ave started from Ninth Ave, which is why the latter has an abandoned lower level, thus making it a former bi-level express station similar to 145th St where the A and C split from the D and B, respectively and vice versa. The section between Ninth and Ditmas was converted to a shuttle in the same manner as the 42nd St Shuttle, that being disconnecting a section of a main line and only running shuttles on it. This was done to connect the 4-track section from Church Ave to the 3-track section from Ditmas Ave. The former was run by the IND and the latter was run by the BMT. The shuttle was discontinued in 1975 and was later demolished due to low ridership, therefore making it impossible to travel between Ninth and Ditmas by train anymore. This is why the IND Culver Line used to be the BMT Culver Line as mentioned on Wikipedia (although it’s only for the 3-track section). As for the 2-track section from Neptune Ave to Coney Island, it was added to extend the line to the latter. However, it had to take over West 8th St’s lower level which was originally served by the Brighton Line’s local tracks whereas the upper level is served by what was originally just the Brighton Line’s express tracks. This is why the Brighton Line’s local and express tracks merge into each other after Ocean Pkwy and also why B express trains short-turn at Brighton Beach whereas Q local trains continue, since there isn’t enough room to turn around all B and Q trains combined on the same tracks and because Ocean Pkwy has no crossovers. This is an example of a railway line’s evolution also affecting other lines.

23:55 I see that the engineers had to underpin the original IND vertical beams with concrete on steel beams underneath to make the F train drop here, where there used to be a level track before. They must have put up temporary supports next to the originals while they dug underneath them ? Anyhow, they did a magnificent job ! They didn't have to move the beam's original locations. If you freeze it at 1:28 when the F train is interlocking with the local track. to the right. Was wondering if the express track on the left was ever use for express trains instead of storage trains...
@wtaenyc2 жыл бұрын
Great observation. Yes those tracks are used for service at times but it’s not necessarily for “express” service. The trains on that track still make this station stops. We believe the F becomes an express train after 71st Continental.
@cbrown7172 жыл бұрын
Yes. When I was a kid the E train ran express on these tracks. At 71 Continental AV they both ran express and the GG and N rand local.

I will tell you about my old home station Utica Ave on the IRT. Please let me know when you have the video I believe it's the 3 or 4 train.
@wtaenyc2 жыл бұрын
Both the 4 and the 3 stop there. Utica is the 4’s last stop on weekdays while the 3 continues past Utica and into the heart of the Brownsville and East New York neighborhoods. We are excited for you to see both of those lines on this channel and ask that you kindly subscribe/turn on notifications so you won’t miss when we release them.

At Lex and 63rd, the reason the F train comes in on the left track is because the southbound Q train stops on the right side. Trains running towards Queens or upper 2nd Ave. are on another level. And Yes - there are crossovers between the two lines here. Someday a northbound Q train could run to Queens, or an F train could go up 2nd Ave.
@wtaenyc Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing this knowledgeable information with everyone. It’s quite amazing how both trains can switch that easily.

The thing the MTA should do is send the M to 96th permanently and send the G back to Forest Hills.
@kitsunefaye1661 Жыл бұрын
@@ECO473That would be good, except Nebby, Rachel (just one for AM rush), and Wendy got to 96th/2nd Avenue to offset capacity issues at Ditmars Boulevard, which is a double tracked island platform.
@ECO473 Жыл бұрын
@@kitsunefaye1661 That's a fair point. That said, is there enough of a turnaround capacity to have at least one line terminate at 57th Street/7th Avenue?
@kitsunefaye1661 Жыл бұрын
@@ECO473 Unfortunately, no. There’s too much train traffic for a proper short turn at that station. Suzy Q uses the express tracks full time except late nights.

What is the advantage of blinking green lights? And lights won't indicate in yellow anymore when the next switch will change a train's track???
@wtaenyc Жыл бұрын
Great question. The blinking green is a part of the new CBTC signaling system. Blinking green allows the train operator to know the system is working as designed, following the on screen instructions on their operating screens, for their route and the situation you mentioned. One of the advantages of this system is to allow trains to operate closer to each other, preventing lesser wait times for trains.
@sopaman12342 жыл бұрын
If you freeze it at 54:38 notice on your right side you will see a gate.. An armor subway car(AKA) (The MONEY TRAIN).. Would make a stop there to deposit the MTA revenue money. Where a bank was located in the upper level of the station.. It's now abandon . No longer in use..

(I'm not from NYC.) Do they ever have a terminating F turn into an originating D (and vice-versa) at Coney Island, and the same for N and Q's? Looks like they could.
@wtaenyc Жыл бұрын
Great observation and question. Sometimes, should it be required due to any incident, the tower operators are known for sending those mentioned trains, onto the tracks of other trains. The D train, however, is the only train that cannot become another train, once it enters into its terminal as it is the only line with a bumper block.
@jimneutron1572 жыл бұрын
Well, it was good while it lasted. There hasn't been a new video posted in over a month. Perhaps they got in trouble for mounting the camera outside the train. same with "Limes", nothing new is quite some time. Thanks for the videos you have produced. Really enjoyable.
