When I used to be a volunteer fireman some 30 years ago we had a 1969 Seagrave 100 ft. ladder truck that had a Detroit 6-71 with an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission. 1st and 2nd were separate from the rest of the transmission so you would start in 3rd, and the next shift wasn't until you hit about 25 MPH, about the same as it is with the torque converter on this bus. For that reason the ladder truck sounded EXACTLY like this bus when accelerating, though with a slightly louder exhaust.

I LOVE the roar of the engine. I used to drive a '72 Kenworth that had the same roar from it's much newer Detroit 8V92 replacement engine. The 4-53, 4-71, 6-71 Detroit engines totally transformed passenger buses of all types, and NOTHING else has that sweet sound.

Great video! I love it at 6:59...that'll make you appreciate power steering any day! It was also interesting what the driver said about driving those buses. You couldn't be dainy if you wanted that bus to move, like these days. I hope to make it up there for a ride very soon!

BlueBird school buses (back when they were good) and their San Diego Zoo tour bus used transmissions like that. Crowns used them on occasion, and our early 70s trash truck. Shift positions R N 3-6 3-5 3-4 1-2

1:57 That was the last RTS bus nyc mta bought. A 1999 unit and it was only 10 years old here! Such a coincidence you caught it in service since now it is preserved like this ancient GMC beast!

I know that a one or two buses had problems, but I wonder the overall reliability has been these buses? Great virtual ride and I wish Montreal's dumbells at the STM would do the same with the very few vintage buses we have....

Curious what time wher you on this bus. I want to try to get some rides on these buses. I know I"m going to have to wait till the snow melts, dry streets or they will not run these. When do you think is the earliest I will get my chance.

With today's clean air regulations, I'm sure they have been retrofitted not to put out all the smoke and soot they used to. It was enough to choke a horse. You could really smell that raw diesel in the air. How times change. I would not mind riding on one of those again. The seats were comfortable. If I'm correct, there were also Mack buses similar to those with gasoline engines.

I am a BUS Operator for the NYCTA I'm wondering why he's driving this bus like he's in a race?

I watched the entire video... sure the engine sounds like its revving high, but I didn't notice anywhere in the video where the bus was actually moving fast.
