NEW YORK FASHION WEEK IS DEAD?!

New York Fashion Week has long been hailed as one of the pinnacles of menswear, men's fashion, and just fashion in general. However, in recently years, fashion week has seemingly felt more and more underwhelming, and is no longer the spectacle it once was when compared to Milan fashion week or Paris fashion week. The New York fashion week events have gone through an enormous downsize, with the conclusion of Mercedes Benz being a majority sponsor for fashion week, as well as the complete downsizing of the event itself, having moved to a much smaller venue. This being coupled with poor modeling, rudimentary set designs, and hiring influencers for shock value instead of models, the once great spectacle of Mens fashion week, and New York Fashion Week in general has diminished.
Fashion Week may not be completely dead, and many of the events still seem quite fun, but it is shrouded in a sea of bed decision, legal issues causing unfortunate changes such as downsizing, as well as losing the once ever so alluring "exclusivity" factor. Fashion Week was once a way to romance to the new and upcoming mens fashion trends, menswear trends, and general fashion trends as a whole. Now, it's basically no longer necessary, as with social media, this information, as well as a view into the collections is available right at your fingertips. Educating yourself on menswear brands, mens fashion trends, and menswear trends has never been easier.
So is New York Fashion Week really completely dead? Maybe not. But it has less power in the industry than it ever has, and less allure than it ever has as well.

I’m a lighting guy out here in LA and I do a few fashion week jobs every year and the biggest difference I see is the social media marketing. Everything from, like you said, hiring influencers instead of real talent to actually framing the shots in a phone aspect ratio instead of for TV . Everything we were shooting was meant to be watched on a phone 😮 that blew my mind! TV is secondary now

Thanks so much for the comment and the knowledge my friend! I didn’t even think about that 👀 They have you really editing them for primarily social media bow? That’s insane bro! I can only imagine the stress you go through during fashion week. What do you feel about it on your end? 👀

@@AlejandroJomar prepare for a long one lol 1. the fans (or people who're into fashion) Before it used to be genuinely about the fashion, now it's about them and how they can look cool for social media, like when I talk to other people about NYFW, they think of the cool pics they can take and hopefully celebs they'll see...not about the actual collection or the opportunity to network anymore. like one time I was in line to go to a show in NYFW and this girl got out of her Uber walking and strutting for her friend to photograph her, she didn't like how it looked so she quickly got back inside the Uber and walked out and did it again walking for the front door...and then cut the cameras and went to the back of the line😂😂😂😂 it's all for clicks and likes to them. 2. trends, a lot of brands are trying to FOLLOW the trend and not BECOME the trendsetters, even though I'm 21, I see shows and collections from the 90s and I envy how much more authentic they were, I agree there are some good authentic brands now, but not at the level it was at back then, the industry's too saturated with brands following the trends. 3. The fashion industry in itself is a BRUTAL industry, it is not for the weak, it'll break you down and spit on you and you gotta get back up. People don't want to deal with that when there are many new forms of art spreading in this generation. I know models, designers, stylists, editors, etc. who have stories of the hardship they go through, so they take their talent elsewhere. this model I know is getting into acting now, this stylist is getting into skincare, a designer I know is becoming an architect, and this list goes on. Fortunately, social media is exposing us to new art/industries you can get into and people in the fashion world are migrating to those new places. In conclusion, social media is kinda the death of NYFW. cuz before social media, fashion had a "YOU JUST HAD TO BE THERE" kinda vibe, now you can see it on a reel on TikTok or IG and that's it. on top of that, the same goes for what you said about models, I know models who actually work hard and starve themselves to look fit enough for the clothes, now every influencer is a model and will get a modeling gig at a major brand instead of the real model.
