Johnson spins off his blocker to pressure Redskins QB Stan Humphries and lay a lick on him after throwing pass.....Humphries gets up limping......next play...interception as Humphries can't get his leg into the throw. Even though the Giants dropped 7 defenders into coverage they think they have an advantage on the pass rush with 2 linebackers + 2 linemen vs the Redskins offensive line. Pepper was First Team All-Pro this season.....he had the best season of any defender on this Giants defense. I so miss watching Parcells' teams play.

As a Giants fan of 40 years, the 1990 team is the greatest Giants single season team IMO and one of the greatest single season teams in NFL history. That team set records, pounded teams into submission and had one of the toughest schedules ever. So great they won it all with a back up QB.
@fritzstuber30125 жыл бұрын
@@danielkelegian5306 I believe the '86 team was better; the '90 team got all the bounces in close games and were 5-0 (including playoffs) in games decided by 3 points of less, thanks in large part to Roger Craig and Scott Norwood. To say they were fortunate (lucky) would be an understatement. But give them credit, they played a gritty game against the Bills in the Super Bowl. The Bills teams that the Giants and Redskins played in the Super Bowls in 1990 and '91 were much better than the ones the Cowboys played in '92 and '93.

The secondary of the 1990 team was leaps and bounds better than the secondary of the 1986 team. I think the rush defense of the 1990 team was much better than the rush defense of the 1986 team. Teams could not pass or run on the 1990 Giants, except Buffalo in XXV bc of the defense Little Bill schemes up with only 2 DLs. The Special Teams of the 1990 team was also far better than the Special Teams of the 1986 team. The 1986 team was more dynamic on offense and had a better pass rush. The 1990 team played tougher teams than the 1986 team.

@@Revenant2010, 1986 Giants’ defensive secondary: LCB Mark Collins RCB Perry Williams SS Kenny Hill FS Terry Kinard 3.0 sacks; 12 interceptions; 8 fumble recoveries 1990 Giants’ defensive secondary: LCB Mark Collins RCB Everton Walls SS Greg Jackson FS Myron Guyton 4.0 sacks; 14 interceptions; 2 fumble recoveries I don’t know if the 1990 Giants’ team defense was that much better than the 1986 Giants’ squad. The numbers are comparable. Belichick didn’t ask a lot from his secondary as he typically deployed a cover-2 zone defense that placed an emphasis on the front 7 that rarely blitzed. The thing that gives the nod to the 1990 squad is the strength of schedule. The 1990 Giants’ team set a record at the time for having 7 playoff teams on their schedule. I do agree with you that the 1990 team had superior Special Teams play due to Dave Meggett and Reyna Thompson. One place we disagree is the offense. The 1990 Giants had a better offense. Adding Tom Coughlin as WR coach paid big dividends. The 1990 team got contributions from OJ Anderson, Rodney Hampton, and Dave Meggett. WRs Mark Ingram, Stacy Robinson, and Stephen Baker came up big in the Super Bowl vs Buffalo. Ingram’s 3rd and 12 conversion where he jab-stepped, broke 5 tackles and hopped on one leg while stretching for a first down is one of the greatest clutch plays ever made by a WR. In my opinion, the MVP of Super Bowl XXI should have been the entire Giants’ offense. Erhardt’s ball control offense kept the Bills’ offense off the field and the Giants’ defense fresh.

This is a classic example of several flukish Redskins-Giants games from 1988-90 that could have easily gone the other way if not for bizarre plays like this @ 1:59:03. In '88 the Redskins dominated both games but still lost them, and in '89 and '90 they should have split with the Giants. But give the Giants credit in 1990, they got all the bounces and won all of the close games, with a little help from Roger Craig and Scott Norwood.
@michaelbelfer10695 жыл бұрын
fritz stuber Help from Roger Craig? Ever consider giving Erick Howard (it was Howard I believe) credit for ripping the ball out of his hands? As far as Norwood was concerned, Parcells knew he was a mediocre kicker (at best) on a grass field and he had very little experience in clutch situation unlike Matt Baht who was a big time kicker when it counted. Having a strong leg is great, but having made big kicks in the past is more important in my opinion. If Matt was taking that kick, hell, he drills it down the middle for sure.

@brianwaas90855 жыл бұрын
@@danielkelegian5306 A lot of the players did not like Ray Handley. In 1991, I think they were worse than what their record showed, although it was 8-8. Handley was not good at the handling of his QB's. That is because he inherited a QB controversy when he was hired. He had to choose from 2 Super Bowl winning QB's. Hostetler was the starter early on, but Handley was WAY too quick in pulling the plug and going to Simms as soon as he did. After that Super Bowl XXV win, the Giants treated Hostetler like garbage. No wonder he went to the Raiders in 1993. Getting back to Handley's tenure with the Giants though, his bad coaching, along with a lot of other mistakes, really caused the Giants to fade away in 1992, which was the last year for Handley as the Giants' Head Coach.
@danielkelegian53065 жыл бұрын
@@brianwaas9085 He made two mistakes. One was the QB controversy as u noted (Simms should have started IMO, Hostetler was below average as his numbers show). The second was hiring Rod Rust in 1992. The players hated Rust. As I noted above, Giants veterans lost a lot of games expecially in 1991, on missed FG's, penalties, and mistakes in the 4th quarter. They were blowing leads Could have easily been 11-5 or 12-4. In 1992, they were 5-4, LT got hurt and they collapsed. In 1992 the players hated Rod Rust's Read & React scheme. I remember games where Banks, Pepper and the defensive guys would literally scream at Rust on the sidelines and Handley had too play peacemaker. Giants players were also changing defensive play calls in huddle. Of course it all fell on Handley and he didnt want the job anyway, he was third in line. As a fan of 41 years, I will be blunt, that team was aging also.

If I recall right just thinking of that MNF BODY BAG game in PHILLY where the SKINS had so many injuries in that game BRIAN MITCHELL their KO/PR man and running back was their EMERGENCY QB in that game and got them their only TD in the 2nd half. Philly won 28-14. Skins lost Rutledge and Humphries I think. The injuries in 90 and the emergence of Rypien started maybe late in this season and he had a decent Super Bowl season in 91. He was great at making the big plays finding the POSSE etc Also the DEFENSE was nasty and was deep with starters on the bench. The special teams was really good with Brian Mitchell too. He was right there with Deion Sanders for return man. The Giants always did seem to come up with the big play TO wise or complete a pass or get a run to pick up 1st down in these close games over and over again. Simms always seemed to play well against us not to mention LT and that NYG defense when it was not a year the Skins won or lost Super Bowl.
