Nyc had many changes since 1904 when the first subway line was built. Sure many other urbanist changes compound the infrastructure that we found today and sure it’s never enough. It’s important to understand that a prototype of the subway in nyc was fist built in 1870. So the date 1919 is a mistake.

Btw the Statue of Liberty being gifted to the US had nothing to do with the abolition of slavery. It was a 100 year “birthday present” to the US, and signified the friendship between the French and Americans that started in the Revolutionary days.

I was puzzled by that statement as well. I was taught in school the same thing you said. I am a Black American and I am proud of my country and all its people ( including my own race) but we need to stop making shit up. Revisionist history needs to stop. Teach the truth no matter how hurtful it can be. We must learn from historical mistakes so that we do not repeat them. We also need to stop applying modern-day political logic and social customs to past events. Acknowledge history. Learn from history and move forward. Slavery should not have been mentioned in this video. I've never toured NYC. I want to visit.

Plus, the north of the park is designed to remind one of a walk through the Adirondack and Catskill woods. Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, also served as inspiration for Central and Prospect Park. In the mid-1800s, it was the 2nd most visited place in the US(Niagara Falls) and one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world. The massive popularity of the cemetary made the New York & Brooklyn city fathers take notice that people wanted a permanent place where the masses could go and play.

I have relatives who live in new York who absolutely hate it there. They do like the food and some of the iconic landmarks, but people don't have a backyard. Most have to commute by taxi since they don't own cars, and above all, it's a terrible living experience. There's a huge homeless problem there because it is extremely expensive. Did you know Manhattan in New York is exchanged for Run Island in Maluku, Indonesia? 396 years ago, the popularity of Run Island - an island with a length of 3 km and a width of less than 1 km - was incomparable to Nieuw Netherland (now called Manhattan), a small island south of the tip of the Hudson River in the Americas, which was controlled by the Dutch in 1624.Run Island is an island rich in nutmeg trees, a spice that was very expensive in the Western world (at that time) which competed with the price of gold.At that time Run Island was occupied by the British. The Dutch with their trading company, , who wanted to control the spice monopoly in the Banda Islands, did not like the British control over Run Island. They also fought several wars, before finally reconciling by signing the Breda Treaty in October 1624. The contents of the Breda Treaty were that the Netherlands and Britain agreed to exchange and roll. The Dutch were willing to release Nieuw Netherland in America and hand it over to the British, while the British gave Run Island to the Dutch. The British rulers then changed the name Nieuw Netherland to Manhattan and together with the four regions (commonly called the borough) around it, the area was named New York. Over time, the Manhattan and Run Island swap was considered the worst swap deal in history, particularly for the Netherlands. Because the Netherlands soon lost the dominance of its spice monopoly in Maluku, Indonesia, while Manhattan in New York was rapidly developing into the center of the world economy in the modern age.

@@sagnbaby they either have access to affordable housing through section 8/ living in the projects or they bought an apartment when they were more affordable in the 90s. There is no affordable housing today in New York they simply don’t build enough to at the very least keep the rent prices stable. 2 million people moved to New York in the last 20 years but only 200 thousand homes were built. That’s your problem right there. If it was a store you’d have a few hundred people fighting for each product, obviously the highest bidder will get it every time..

New York used to be Dutch territory in the New Netherlands area. New Amsterdam was it's name before the British seized it from them and named it "New" York in honor of the Duke of York. I stayed in Time Square. The only things I enjoyed from my visit was the Statue of Liberty, seeing the famous landmarks and locations, looking at the skyline, tour bus and ferry ride.

I live in New York and I must tell you… you DO NOT want to live here! It used to be amazing and full of life and fun and had a vibe that was unbelievable. After the riots and vandalism, and cop hating, Black Lives Matter…etc… it is not the New York I’ve ever known. It is no longer safe. There is not a day that goes by that there isn’t a random shooting, or stabbing or people beating the crap out of elderly people walking down the street, just for the fun of it. I will no longer walk the streets I’ve loved for so long. It’s very sad. And that wonderful vibe I was talking about, that vibe has turned into a dark cloud of fear and random violence. I am moving to Stamford Connecticut in August. It’s gorgeous, safe, and amazing. And if you want to visit NYC you can take the metro North and be there in 40 minutes or less. Just some advice! God bless!

Hudson Yards looks uninviting to me. Like it should be a painting backdrop to an 80s movie where the rich take shelter from the poor folks, walled in with cyborgs guarding on that pinecone thing and about, along with the bad guys running the space, along with the villain, who would be in the building with the balcony making schemes and such. In any case, it looks cold and predictable as modern architecture goes with no traditional hallmarks of NYC architecture or any homage to the city's aethstetic whatsoever. Some may argue that this is a step in a new versatile direction for the city but I think the Yards would be better set against any other city apart from New Orleans and San Francisco.. I'm not saying I'm right but I do think this is true, personally. I'm not opposed to modern architecture but there is nothing clever or unique about the development apart from the balcony and pinecone - and they aren't exactly enough to become iconic for me, and in context are far more like corporately clever features, one of which isn't publicly accessible, I think? And so, mute point on the balcony... and the pinecone would be better in Central Park or another place altogether. It's like a poor 80s movie set though, the whole thing and I don't fully know why I get that vibe. It could have been so much more. I appreciate the innovation of the site over the Yards but that's pretty much it.

@@bluebugaboo3344 I disagree. I think the COVID move out is temporary. Moreover, there will always be demand by the extremely wealthy for trophy properties in New York. Houston? I don't think so. Its skyline is, for the most part, uninspired. It's been a few years since I have been there; it was my recollection there was little downtown construction going on. Moreover, Russian oligarchs and Chinese Billionaires hedging their bets don't want to live in Houston - there is no international siren call for Houston. Miami, is a better call. But it's call is not the same as New York's.

Ed Wallace your thinking is the real reason of American decline but you are not to blame. Sky high rentals and unaffordable housing like those in New York is killing innovation and middle class. I'm a former licensed New York City tour guide with an emphasis on Lady Liberty herself. I have volumes of books on her including several involving her specific architecture and construction that were compiled and published during her 1983-1986 restoration project. I can tell you with 100% conviction that the Statue of Liberty was absolutely NOT given to the US to "commemorate the recent abolition of slavery". It was to commemorate the country's centennial in 1876. However, it took ten years longer to build and wasn't actually ready for dedication until 1886. Seriously, man. Guys like you who put these little videos together have to stop rewriting history. I hate to use the tired old cliches that get thrown around constantly now- such as "read a book", "learn the facts", and "educate yourself", but that all holds so true here. You really shouldn't put something like this out there unless you've done a great deal of serious study on the subject. When you get that wrong, it begs the question as to whether you've gotten anything else here right. I'm sorry. I hate to chastise you, but it's a topic I hold near and dear and know a whole lot about and it just bugs me to see false information about it. That's all.
