Lawrence Mao i'm not going to sit here and deny that race doesn't play a role in the admissions process, but you can't completely dismiss the fact that he's a hard worker and intelligent. just because a person is black doesn't mean that they're going to get accepted to all Ivy League schools, you have to have stats that match. It's sad how people like you disregard all his hard work just because he's black. I've seen many college acceptance videos with people that have as many extracurricular activities as him and probably have similar stats as him from all races. You guys complain about affirmative action, but at the end of the day, blacks make up 7-11% of Ivy League demographics, you whites are still the majority :)

Honestly he put in the time, he put in the effort, and he put in the dedication. He deserved to get into those schools. And to everyone saying his race had an effect on his acceptances, it did. Schools want diversity, but he was certainly not just accepted just because of his race.

I don't think people are against the fact that he puts in effort, it is just that there are many others who work just as hard or harder but couldn't get in cause of their race. Its stupid to use race as a criteria when deciding who to accept

All 8 and you blame race damn if this opportunity was only based on diversity than he would maybe get 1 or 2 colleges I’m not saying all opportunities but this one is definitely not based on diversity he worked hard for this and he earned it and if all colleges really wanted diversity and you say because he is African than that means there are a variety of other cultures and such meaning there are less Africans in colleges and it’s really hard to keep it diverse if there are millions of schools trying hard to get they’re students in college think about it just because you heard something or you’ve seen it happen doesn’t mean it happened everywhere he has a chance and he nailed it taking blood sweat and tears to make it this far he would hate to see half of people watching this blame it on his race and not his dedication he is a human being not just a color

@Ludwig Nah asians have it worse than whites if you look at the statistics but both ethnicities are definitely at an unfair disadvantage
@jrbb1837
@jrbb1837 6 жыл бұрын
White are not at unfair disadvantage. If you compare colleges with and without affirmative action. The colleges that practiced affirmative action actually have a higher proportion of white students. In colleges or high schools where affirmative action is not practiced, asians are about 30% of the student body (in UCs it's around 40%), while in ivy they are 10%. So whites benefitted a lot. Without affirmative actions the colleges will be full of asians.

I think most people do not want to undermine his effort, its just that other people who worked just as hard and just as smart may not get in just because or their race, ivy leagues wants diversity, he just needs to be one of the top in his race group, so if you compare an asian to him, the asian would need a much higher score to be on top of their age group (generally) as compared to him.

This isn't jealousy. The fact is that he had an unfair advantage owing to his race. The fact is that an asian has an unfair disadvantage owing to his/her race. Just because alot of asians are successful people, it doesn't mean they don't struggle.

@Anita Blackwell Never once did I say that he only got in because of his race. What I said, if you can read, is "The fact is that he had an unfair advantage owing to his race. The fact is that an asian has an unfair disadvantage owing to his/her race."

@Anita Blackwell Thank you for being understanding of other people's perspective. Are you asking why Asians have a disadvantage?
@robertcarson3116
@robertcarson3116 4 жыл бұрын
@Anita Blackwell I think i agree with you. Jealousy is a universal quality. Asians are given a disadvantage. Affirmative action is meant to help people that normally wouldn't have opportunities. The process assumes that all Asians are wealthy, and all black, latino, and native people aren't wealthy. Obviously, this isn't true at all. In fact, Asians have the largest wealth disparity - more than any other race!!! However, despite this, affirmative action gives priority to others, just because of the color of their skin. Indians, Chinese, etc, are all discriminated against in the college process owing to this.

Congrats to this young man, his parents and community. Your hard work paid off. All the naysayers are just jealous because it does nothing but burst their stereotypical bubble. Given the same playing field and being in the right environment enables anyone to compete. And that’s hard for some people to accept. Remember, Jesse Owens proved that to the Germans who thought he was to inferior to beat them on the track field!
