I attended this game. Cubs were home that afternoon and the crowd at Wrigley was so small the upper deck was closed. Hard to believe now but the White Sox totally owned Chicago in 1981.

Trickle-down economic theory was in its infancy; so there was still a middle class, relatively speaking. And most folks were still comfortable enough and still terrified enough by the Cold War propaganda not to question too much. MLB Players Union was powerful then, but nothing compared to today. Other worker unions in the country at that time were about to begin their rapid decline and today they hardly even exist. And most that still exist have leadership in the pockets of the companies. The whole thing is rigged now and nobody can regulate it because the monetary imbalance was allowed to become too great.

Being from Philadelphia, I was a HUGE Greg "The Bull" Luzinski fan and I'm so glad he caught on with the Sox after his great stint with the Phillies. People often forget this man was a 4 time All Star and 2 time NL MVP Runner up (1975,1977). The Bull was born in Chi-Town!

Really interesting to see Harry interviewing Eddie Einhorn at the beginning of the video. It was Einhorn and Reinsdorf's decision to move the Sox games to cable TV (Sportsvision), along with Harry's distrust of both of them, that caused Harry to leave the Sox and move to WGN and the Cubs. It took the Sox winning in '83 before Sox fans would begin to forgive Reinsdorf and Einhorn for losing Harry.

SportsVision wasn't on cable (except for a few select areas). It was a scrambled over-the-air signal using TV station Channel 60 WPWR-TV Gary / WBBS-TV West Chicago. Subscribers paid for boxes to unscramble the signal. Sometimes they had free preview nights which were un-scrambled.

@ 15:36... Yankees starting pitcher Doug Bird despite his 5-0 record and 2.63 ERA was traded the very next day after this game. On 6/12/81... Bird was traded to the Chicago Cubs along with $400,000 in exchange for veteran starting pitcher and long time Cub Rick Reuschel. Cubs owner William Wrigley was fattening his wallet knowing that he would soon sell the Cubs ball club to the Chicago Tribune Company. Wrigley sold the Cubs 5 days after this game on 6/16/81 for $20.5 Million. The White Sox had been sold 6 months earlier by Bill Veeck for $20 Million. The Tribune Company owned the Cubs until August 2009, when they sold the team to the Ricketts family for $845 Million. The Cubs as of 2020 are now worth around $3 BILLION.

A very interesting game, with both teams and the game of baseball at crossroads. This was the final year of the original Steinbrenner era "dynasty", the team would reach the World Series in 1981 for the fourth time in six years and would not reach it again until 1996. Bill Veeck sold the White Sox at the beginning of 1981 so this team was the final team from his short run as owner. This was Harry Caray's final year with the club, his Chicago Cub era would begin in 1982. Jimmy Piersall would be fired after the season by the new owners (I have to admit I didn't care for his announcing). Of course baseball would go on strike from June 12th to July 31st. Thank you so much, I enjoyed the game.

I'm wondering if anyone has the infamous Sept. 22, 1966 game between the White Sox and Yankees in Yankee Stadium. It was notable because it drew the third smallest crowd (413 fans) in MLB history and was televised by WPIX-TV (Channel 11) in New York, becoming the game that led to the end of Red Barber's broadcast career. Barber told camera personnel to show the almost entirely empty stands for that game showing how far the Yanks had fallen (in a two-year stretch the Yanks went from winning the AL Pennant in 1964 to becoming old in a hurry and finishing LAST in the AL in 1966) and was fired the next day, though allowed to finish out that season as Yankees play-by-play voice.

With respect to that game, it was an unscheduled make-up game played during an unseasonably cold rainy week in late September with the The Yankees in last place. The question was not why are there only 413 (I think the number was actually 496) in attendance, it was why did these people attend this game in the first place. Barber was insubordinate, the announcers were instructed not to make any reference to the empty stadium, he deliberately disobeyed the instruction. One other point the Yankees had four announcers, the team eliminated one position as a budget move. The team was losing a main sponsor at the end of the season (Ballantine Ale) so the organization was looking to make a cut to save some dollars. The Yankees remained with just three announcers into the 1970's. The other announcers were Joe Garagiola, Jerry Coleman and Phil Rizzuto, all in the prime of their careers with many years ahead of them. Barber on the other hand was almost 60, most associated him with the old Brooklyn Dodgers, he was the obvious choice to be let go. He was also the highest paid so he stuck out like a sore thumb.

@@bsully9219 I didn't quite notice that, but that is funny. What I DID catch though, is no mention of the star of the movie, Harrison Ford in the ad that I could see. Somewhat surprising for a movie that was just coming out, you'd think they'd wanna play that up, especially with the built-in Star Wars tie in. Sidenote, Tom Selleck was cast for that role originally, but turned it down for Magnum P.I. not believing he could do both, only to find out later because of shooting delays he could have. But by then, his chance was gone. He was out, and Ford was in. As it is, he ended up with a highly successful run with Magnum (been watching the reruns with my mom now and again recently, great great series), and Ford obviously became an even bigger star than he was before with the role, so worked out well for both parties ultimately. Gotta wonder what woulda happened in a parallel world where he (Selleck) took that role though. It'd be interesting to find out.

Before he became a baseball player, Ron Leflore the great base stealer was jailed for...stealing. An inspirational story still. They made a TV movie about it. Around this time, many fans already thought that Fisk might be a future Hall of Famer. But absolutely no one thought of Harold Baines. Nor that Tony LaRussa would be managing the White Sox 40 years later! Rest in peace, Harry Caray. Truly one of a kind ("At the end of two, the good guys 2, the bad Yankees 1")

I actually remember attending a game that night. I was Nine years old and my family attended a game in Bloomington MN between the Twins and Tigers. It was helmet night so we all got souvenir helmets which helped during the rain delay that night. We decided to go to the game on Sunday and in those days you could get good seats at Met Stadium as the Twins were not a good team in 1981.

The Cardinals suffered a similar fate as well, having the top record in the NL East, but losing out to the Expos and Phillies who woulda otherwise finished 2 and 2.5 games behind them respectively. At least they went to and won the World Series the following season though to make up for that, which is more than could be said for the Reds, who had to wait basically a full decade after this before getting their next title.
