There's a story of a Chinese man who went to NZ and due to various circumstances, settled there finally as a farmer. He had a Maori wife and was well loved by the Maori community. It was moving to see how his descendants traced their roots in China when they visited his village. There was real amity between the families. That how NZ-China relationship is. Don't let the US sow enmity between them.

I can understand that commercial or private media are mostly controlled, manipulated &/or oppressed by the world hegemon through its proxy media tycoons to act according to the hegemon's instructions. However, I would have thought that Television New Zealand is the NZ Government's own platform to act independently & righteously to report real truths of its news to Kiwis. But no, it is well & truly within the strong grasp of the hegemon's hand.

@@donatwu3128 The media and maybe society as a whole, have just been focused on modern trade and commerce (not so much human stories and historical trade). Unfortunately, the NZ media seem not interested in the 50the anniversary. Instead, the NZ Herald has 2 rather negative reports on trivial (with sensationalized headlines) China-related matters. So, thanks Andy for reminding us of such a milestone date. Yellow Peril is, to my opinion, still very much in a lot of people's mind. Still remember the MP who used a phone book to prove that Chinese speculators were behind a heated property market? How ridiculous! NZ-China relation is just one of many things, in which KIwis set a good example to the rest of the world. Kiwis have a special trait of handling things nicely and in a humble manner.

Why call Australian leaders "knuckle heads" ? That's simply too kind and unstated. Given that Canberra is deliberately threatening 1.4 billion Chinese people with American B52 nuclear bombers and nuclear annihilation Australian leaders deserve far worst than "knuckle heads". Great piece Andy, NZ history was never a focus for me as it is for most Australians who were born in a privileged white Australia myopia, yet today Australia is home to many NZ expats. NZ history at best was rudimentary when I was growing up in the 1950-60s where we learned that the Maoris were great warriors and impressed the whites settlers so much that intermarriage was common and encouraged. That's what we were taught and that there was racial harmony because of that. That was before "Once were Warriors” hit the screens and a much different story came into view. How we learn things can change outlooks in an instant. So this was illuminating. Watched it twice already. "

As far as I know, the Chinese have always experienced persecution and killings wherever they are. both in Southeast Asia, America, England and in South America. All of this is always preceded by social jealousy because most of the overseas Chinese are more successful than the local population. Sure, the laws were repealed now...but what was the impetus of such law that were not levied against other immigrating ethnic groups? As a side note, anyone notice that a single preference community, say for example a religious community or a single race community tends, at that point in time several hundreds of years ago, to enact laws that actively discriminates against someone different?

Charter - a document [or more] formed by the governing body imposed over the people. A Charter May include some Privileges like License, Permits, Titles, Money ... all subject slave to the govt. We do not have a founding document as the Treaty was signed under threat of attack [therefore invalid]. We have 3 documents they say is a constitution yet A. The People have Never Ratified them B. it is not lawful to extend a contract over the unborn child so on both A&B the theory of a valid constitution is now dead.
