Besides that 1 year I lived in California. My family has been vacationing at cannon beach every year since before I was even born. In 2010, Richard Donner recalled how they selected the location for the film: “We all jumped into a van and started driving up the West Coast. We got all the way up to Astoria. It was just one look and that was it-fall in love-Astoria was it.” BTW, Kindergarten Cop was also filmed in Astoria.

@gregengel1616Ай бұрын
Sam talks about it towards the end that Tanner wasn't a viewer, but a guy he met on Facebook looking for a Seattle Seahawks cap. Nonetheless, it was very cool for them to give them a tour.
@bookhouse70Ай бұрын
Sam guessed the origin of the expression “getting shanghaied” sort of backwards. It’s not because workers were from China - it’s because the Pacific Northwest attracted many men (mostly young) who came seeking livelihoods, but didn’t have local family, and so they were easily kidnapped without anyone immediately noticing them missing. The pirates or bandits would then sail from Oregon to Shanghai, which at that time was a common white slavery destination (not kidnapped Chinese people, generally).
@ryanawilson8549Ай бұрын
Thank you. I was thinking the same thing.
@DoyleRichards-v1lАй бұрын
No the men that were shanghaied weren't sold in China, they were sold to ship's captains heading for the far-East. Captains of ships short of crew would hire brokers to deliver men to work on the ship - "No questions asked". If there wasn't enough willing volunteers, they would hire girls in the bars to slip something in the drinks of a young man, who would wake up on a ship out to sea - The next stop China.
@bigplanettАй бұрын
Yep. Came here to say the same. Lots of people were Shanghaied from San Francisco near where I live as well. The stories are amazing.
@57ditchdiggerАй бұрын
The phrase took off during the gold rush. Ships would dock on the coast, and their crews would disappear to find their fortune. The ships needed crews, so they'd have agreement with some of the locals to kidnap people for ship's crews. In San Francisco there are(were) elaborate trap doors and tunnels to kidnap and transport the victims to the docks.
@Lashes.541Ай бұрын
Yes, you would wake up on a boat and be expected to work on it for months at a time for no pay if you wanted to get back to the states. Or else they would leave you someplace or every worse… I never knew it was happening in Astoria, but it makes sense, I been in the tunnels in Portland

Why did Spielberg choose Goonies sight to film? Steven Spielberg chose Astoria, Oregon, to film The Goonies because of its unique blend of historic architecture and breathtaking natural scenery. The town's charming small-town atmosphere, along with its picturesque coastal setting, made it an ideal location for the film's adventurous and nostalgic vibe. Spielberg, along with director Richard Donner and writer Chris Columbus, fell in love with Astoria during their scouting trip and decided it was the perfect backdrop for the story of the Goonies.

Hi NZers. Long time fan/subscriber. I just wanted to pass a quick story to you Sam. The Mother of my very best friend in High School and College dated and lived with John Matuszak (aka Sloth) for over 5 years until he sadly passed away. I got to know him very personally from hanging out at there house. I have never met anyone as HUGE as he was (he had that Gigantism disease). Every feature on the guy was triple the size of everyone else. But he was so soft spoken and an absolute gentleman. I had him sign probably over a 100 different items over the years that I got to know him (Including a handful of official NFL Footballs). He was always willing and excited to talk to anyone (especially fans). I also had him sign some stuff as Sloth where he put his real name and an aka Sloth next to it. I know your love of the movie (it really is a truly iconic good movie). I am going to try and find some of that signed stuff in my storage and I would love to send you something signed from him (especially something where he put Sloth on said item). I will drop you a message to be aware that it was sent so you could look for it. :) I also want to pass along a little Goonies trivia -- the final and climactic scenes at the fictional "Cauldron Point" were filmed at Goat Rock Beach at the Sonoma Coast State Park (truly God's country just North of San Francisco). And some of the background and production shots were filmed at George Lucas' 'SkyWalker' Ranch (which is about 3 miles from my house in Marin County). So next time you come to America make sure you stop by San Francisco (there is NO where more beautiful than the SF Bay Area) - where you can see 'The Cauldron' Beach where the entire end of Goonies was filmed (and maybe go by SkyWalker Ranch). I would gladly meet up with you to guide you to both places. God Bless you and your wonderful family. You and your lovely wife Nadine are raising 2 worldly young adults and it truly is wonderful to follow and behold. Ciao From Marin and San Francisco....

'Shanghai' actually comes from Shanghai in China, where ships that didn't have sufficient crew would get someone drunk, take them to the ship once they passed out, and then when the victim slept it off and woke up, they'd be out to sea and involuntarily conscripted as a member of the ship's crew.

I love that the sign had Sloth's line "Hey you guys" on it to call attention to the rules! LOL! Goonies trivia bit: One-Eyed Willy's pirate ship "The Inferno" was an actual fully functional floating ship built just for the movie and was based off of the ship used in the 1940 Errol Flynn movie "The Sea Hawk". It was also used in the Cyndi Lauper video "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough". The ship sailing away at the end of the movie is a 5' replica of The Inferno that they used so that they didn't have to crew the full sized ship to sail it or need to tow it out to sea and edit out the towboats. They tried to give away The Inferno FOR FREE to anybody that wanted it after filming stopped but nobody wanted it, so they gave it away to a company that cut it up for the lumber in it!
