In the south when the kitchen was a separate structure from the main house.... the walk from the kitchen to the house was called whistlers walk as the servants had to whistle as they walked from the kitchen to the house. That way the owners knew the servants weren't tasting the food. The problem was, did would come running and bark. So the cons fried up corn meal mush and would throw it at the did and say HUSH PUPPY HUSH.

Don't confuse a Use By Date with an Expiration Date. They are quite different. A Use By Date is the date the manufacturer guarantees the taste and quality of the product. Molasses is a thick, dark syrup made during the sugar-making process. First, the sugar cane is crushed and the juice is extracted. The juice is then boiled to form sugar crystals and removed from the liquid. The thick, brown syrup left after removing the sugar from the juice is molasses. This process is repeated several times to produce a different type of molasses each time. When you visit America, visit a See's chocolate store. They are amazing!!!

Molasses is what you refer to as black treacle. It’s the pure liquid form of sugar before being processed into the forms of dry sugar. It’s so sugary to the point its hyper thick and moves at a snail’s pace. The stuff really isn’t the easiest to work with but if you can make it work try it in recipes. It’s also sold as molasses in varying degrees of thickness and processing for you to figure out what is best for a recipe.

They predict when the next eruption will be, and if it doesn't happen when they say, they tell you "The longer the wait, the bigger the eruption will be." But all the National Parks are great in their own ways. Atlanta, there should be a recipe on the back of the marshmallow fluff container for their fudge. It's really simple to make, but when you're finished making the base add peanut butter, vanilla and chocolate chips to the base and mix it up. Really good. You can also add in some pecans or whatever kind of nut you prefer and then spread it out on a lightly buttered and you will have some of the best fudge you've ever eaten. I make this all the time and it's it's really really simple. It only takes 5 minutes for the base. Once it starts boiling you count down 5 minutes and it's done. Then you add the chocolate chips, the peanut butter, the vanilla and the nuts and then you scrape it out onto a flat pan and let it cool and enjoy. It's really good

If refrigerated, eggs don't really expire... but the whites WILL evaporate and the yolk shrivel up... so if you crack an egg and it's moist enough to be appetizing, it's okay. Again, so long as they were kept in the fridge (in the US... I know other countries don't refrigerate).

As an executive chef from the acf and the art Institutes i just wanted to point out that the long round stick is not a sharpener, but it is a honing tool. The difference is that a sharpener grinds away the metal, but a honing tool straightens out the rolled over edge of a very sharp blade. So, when you have a really good sharp blade, made of stainless steel which is a soft steel and because the blade is so sharp, when you cut with it, it folds the edge over. You can use the honing tool as much as you like, you will not damage the blade at all. But, I recommend you hone your blade atleast once before or after each use.

jeffhampton2767, Well Jeff you are entitled to your opinion, but being from the Southern part of the U.S. That was the story we were told. Bunch of hunters sitting around a campfire cooking with the hunting dogs whining for a taste, so the cook would fry some dough and while tossing a piece saying now hush puppies.

The story behind hush puppies is because in the south the kitchen would be built at a distance from the main house; because fires would usually start in the kitchens, so this kept the big mansions from being burned to the ground. The staff would have to carry all the food into the house to be served. On the way; all the plantation dogs would be following the staff on the way to the house. They would call “hush puppy” and toss little morsels of food to the dogs to get them to stop barking. Those became hush puppies.

As a Massachusetts-born follower, I can concur that Snow's is, indeed, the best canned clam chowder. It reminds me of my childhood, and I'm very sad that it is no longer stocked locally. Hope you love it! Also, about the chocolate, it's probably fine. It can bloom (change color) and, given enough time and heat, it can get a bit brittle, but the flavor tends not to suffer.

Right On... my family are among original settlers of Grants Pass Oregon!! My Dad born in house 1929 and other branch of our McAllister family "David & Caroline Sexton" were also early pioneers of the Rogue Valley located in Southern Oregon that were involved in the "Rogue Indian Wars of 1850's" to which Sexton Mountain is named after just north of Grants Pass. This my hometown and now you have gift from GP! A book titled "They Settled the Applegate Country" includes much information about the early pioneers of the area around Grants Pass Oregon including members of my Clan, my Grandpa McAllister and his brother Archie were prospectors Gold Miners and patented claims along the Applegate River that runs into the famous Rogue River just west of Grants Pass where my family owned an Appaloosa Horse Ranch at where these two rivers meet. Beautiful area, your family if ever visiting Southwestern Oregon could enjoy a guided Jet Boat Excursion on the Rogue River for a memorable fun filled event 🎉😊 Jimmy's Classic Drive-In on "E" Street makes awesome Burgers and I & my husband Eric always choose their Classic Burgers, we love Classic Cars & are in process refurbishing our 1953 Ford Customline Fordor Sedan it's got Three on the Tree, if you have knowledge about American Classic Cars but if not, this refers to the shift lever and transmission type, with three forward gears and one reverse. In this configuration, the lever is on the steering column also called "the tree," hence the name. Jimmy's walls covered with pictures of Classic Cars and Hollywood Celebrities like Elvis Presley, Jimmy Dean, Marilyn Monroe & others and offer on their menu "Elvis Burger". We enjoy your fun family videos and our pooches Natty Gann (Border Collie) & Schwartzie (Toy Poodle) do too.😊

Hi Shirley--That's fascinating about your family. So much history here in GP. I'm the one that sent that package to them. I sent it 7/18/22 and figured they'd get it 6-10 days later and open it up by the end of July. I didn't realize they were way backed up with packages. By this July I had given up on them ever opening it, but on 7/18 of this year they did! One year to the day later, so the "Christmas in July" worked out, but the "Little Debbie's" cookies and cakes I sent them were tossed. I think the many postcards that I sent of the Rogue Valley, GP and the Redwoods and Oregon Coast will hook them! The Jet Boat Excursions and Jimmy's are also great! Do you still live here? I work with a guy, whose family, the Powells, were early settlers in the Applegate Valley. And a neighbor's family were the Savages--Savage St., Savage Rapids Dam, Savage Creek. They settled the area just past Savage Creek towards Rogue River. There's a house that has "3 Oaks" on it and that's the spot. Anyways, it was great to read your letter!

See’s candy was created by Mary See here in Southern California. They even still manufacture locally. It’s delicious! My favorites are caramel patties, milk chocolate Bordeaux milk chocolate molasses chips. Make sure you get some when your in California. In the USA Halloween has turned into a huge money making machine in the retail world. Most candy manufacturer do some sort of Halloween spin in their candy like pumpkin pie or spice. It’s no longer just a carved pumpkin on the doorsteps often houses are decorated even more than Christmas. All the amusement park’s Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm and Universal Studios Hollywood all decorate and have special events for the season. Even the ship the Queen Mary (yes the UK ship) has retired in Long Beach, California and do a haunted event. So if you come visit in October you’ve got to attend either Knott’s Berry Farm who started in all or Universal Studios Hollywood who do a monster themed Halloween because Universal was the creator of monster movies at the beginning of the talkie movies, early movie history. They do an excellent job.

One tip that I heard and it really does work. You can leave the root end of the onion to cut last, since that is the end that emits the sulfur. Also, while you were in the middle of chopping it, run your hands under cold running water and tears will disappear!

The Fluff did that because the air bubbles trapped inside the mallow expanded in the low pressure environment within a plane's cargo hold. It's definitely still good! Also, the chocolate that has bloomed might look unappetizing, but it's completely safe to eat. That doesn't mean you'll want to eat it, though, as flavor and texture can both be compromised.

A hush puppy is a small, savory, deep-fried round ball made from cornmeal-based batter. Hushpuppies are frequently served as a side dish with seafood and other deep-fried foods. There are a lot of different recipes for them, some include small diced onion in them, which can be pretty good if done right. I think the type of cornmeal used makes a lot of difference, some are great, some not so good. We mostly had them at family fish fry's and at Seafood restaurants, served with your meal of fish, shrimp, scallops and such. In the South, Cheese grits would also be a typical side item with a Seafood meal or fish fry. There's a restaurant in Seaside Florida that makes their cheese grits with Gouda cheese that was dang nice, a really good flavor.

Don't worry about exp dates. They are more of a suggestion to get you to throw out things that are still good for another 6-12 months so you buy more sooner. Chocolate is really the only thing that goes off a little bit. If it's candy it may be harder if it's supposed to be soft, but cans and jars are usually good for a long time past the date, and dried packets of stuff even longer. I just had a can of soup I found in the back of the pantry that expired 10 months ago and it still tasted great. You have to remember the USA puts way more artificial preservatives in foods than is ever necessary.

The companies put a date that is wayyyyyy sooner than it actually is cuz they don't wanna get sued. So as long as something isn't moldy and doesn't smell weird, it is still good to go (usually 😊). The trick I use to slice onion is to put a wooden match stick between my teeth, Sulphur end sticking straight out. The Sulphur deflects the vapors. The name for Hush Puppies come from, when sitting around a fish fry with your dogs around wanting some of that fish, they would take the fish batter and fry off a ball to throw to the dog, while saying "Hush Puppy".
