The wifey is right. Paydays were made during the depression era in the 30s to be a cheap meal replacement bar. The salt added a nice flavor and added salt into a diet that's most likely lacking in salt plus the protein and sugar content. These are the true meal in a bar. More so than snickers.

There's an interesting story. I heard one time that said Milky Way and Three musketeers were made in the same factory. They accidentally switched the labels and three musketeers was supposed to actually be the Milky Way bar because it had three different aspects to it. The caramel, the chocolate and the peanut and Milky Way was supposed to be what three musketeers is now because it has that milky soft inside.

Some people don't like paydays but I really like salty peanuts and the sweet and savory mixes very well there so they are actually probably top 5 candy bars for me that you can just find anywhere. One of my favorites is actually the Zero bar which a lot of people hate but I think they are delicious.

Whatchamacallit (What-Cha-Ma-Call-It) is one of my all time favorites, and they fairly recently came out with the Whozeewhatzit. You might also want to try the Peppermint Patty too, I would recommend putting it in your fridge first or better yet eat it with some vanilla ice cream!

You guys should give the Charleston Chew another chance but this time, freeze it. I know it sounds weird but a lot of us in the US freeze the Chew. It starts like crunchy candy but then gets nice and soft. I think it does change the taste a bit too.

The Skor Bar is made with a thin slab of butter toffee that is wrapped in milk chocolate. This candy bar was first sold in the US in 1981 and then it was transitioned for sales in Canada in 1983. Skor means shoes in Swedish but Skor with the correct marks over the O means brittle.

The same company that makes Almond Joy also makes a version without the Almond, called "Mounds". They usually advertise both candy bars at once, with the very famous jingle, "Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't". LOL. Your reaction to the Payday bar was interesting. Salty sweet things tend to be very popular in America, but the flavor combo can be puzzling to some foreigners. I cringed when you got to the Charleston Chew, lmao. It's been known to remove the dental work of many a poor soul.

I'm from the American Midwest, and I'd actually never heard of the "Big Hunk" candy bar until seeing this video. I like all of the others that were featured. Butterfinger is my favorite type of candy bar, with Baby Ruth as a close second, and Three Musketeers in third. The first time I heard of the Baby Ruth was actually in a funny true story in a kids' nature magazine. In the 1980s, a vending machine company noticed that every few days, one of their machines would come up short by the price of one candy bar, which meant that someone had found a way to steal from the machine. The company set up a security camera, and caught the thief on film a couple of nights later. It turned out to be a squirrel that had learned to wriggle into the machine and take a Baby Ruth bar!

Paydays are really good when you have been working really hard doing something labor intensive and you take a break for a few minutes, they taste like a million bucks, I think it's because the body is really desiring the salt and the protein and they give a nice energy boost.

When you tried the "3 Musketeers" bar, I knew what happened. In England, a(nd New Zealand apparently), A " Milky Way" is the same as America's "3 Musketeers". The KZbin channel, "Lost In The Pond"'s Laurence Brown had an episode where he explained how American candy bars are available in England, (where he is from), but under different names. Being used to a certain brand of candy bar, he bought an American "Milky Way" and was shocked to find it the same as a bar in England with a different spacey name, I believe "Orbit", but it might be a "Mars" bar. This episode was one of his Halloween shows explaining the differences and things that are the same between England and America, where he has lived for the past 15 years or so. I remember that he showed perhaps six brands that were the same as ones he grew up with, but under different names.

The Big Hunk isn't a national candy bar. It's more regional to a small section of the U.S. Some you might wanna try. Chunky, York Peppermint Pattie, Milky Way with Almonds and Milky Way Midnight

The Three Musketeers bar was originally 3 small bars each one with a different filling. One chocolate, one vanilla, and one strawberry. It was eventually changed to one bar with chocolate filling as the other two bars weren't that popular.

I'm 67 and when I was a really young farm girl I only got to go into town on Saturday to actually set foot in a store to buy candy. I would get 2 Baby Ruth candy bars. Back then I think they were longer and bigger around than what they are now. I would scarfed one down immediately and saved the other one to nibble on during the week. They are still my favorite candy bar that's made with milk chocolate but I rarely eat milk chocolate now. I LOVE dark chocolate so my go to chocolate now is Ghirardelli Intense Dark Chocolate 72% Cacao. I read dark chocolate is better for you and these thin little 1.75"x1.75" squares are just enough to hit the spot. A little history on the Baby Ruth candy bars name: Although the name of the candy bar sounds like the name of the famous American baseball player Babe Ruth, the Curtiss Candy Company traditionally claimed that it was named after President Grover Cleveland's daughter, Ruth Cleveland.

Family used to have a vending company and our supplier told us that in the USA and Canada, paraffin wax is added to the chocolate to keep them solid during the heat. Kind of grossed me out and rarely eat American made chocolate; spend a bit at Trader Joe's and eat Belgian, German and Swiss chocolate which is only available in the cooler months because it MELTS.

A classic simple candy bar I like is Nestle Crunch (chocolate with Rice Crispies cereal mixed into it). Another favorite is York Peppermint Patties (chocolate with a peppermint flavored filling). It's recommended to cool Peppermint Patties overnight in your refrigerator before eating. Candy is considered part of the experience of going to see a movie in a theater along with popcorn, and two popular choices are Milk Duds (nuggets of chocolate covered caramel) and Raisinets (chocolate covered raisins). If you want to try well-liked non-chocolate candies, look for Starburst, Sweetarts, Swedish Fish, and Mike and Ike.

For a bit of a laugh, an American radio station ran a contest several years ago, and the prize was a hundred grand. During the duration of said contest, the station mentioned the prize. A woman won, and they blindfolded her. She was expecting a gigantic check (which is reasonable). The radio station gave her a 100 Grand candy bar. She used, and (if I remember correctly) they settled out of court. _________________________________ Skor bars are originally from Sweden. And when Three Musketeers first came out in the 50s, it had three flavors--chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. The vanilla and strawberry flavors weren't as popular as the chocolate, so the manufacturers reformulated the candy bar but didn't relabel it.

Skor is a very old candy bar but it is one of my absolute favorites. It does not get the recognition it deserves. Buttery toffee crisp and a thin layer of chocolate. Alot like honeycomb treats. Love it!

I always loved Charleston Chews growing up, especially for the texture. We used to put them in the freezer, and they'd be shatteringly brittle when you bit into them and then soften into chewiness. The chocolate ones were of course a favorite, but the strawberry ones were delightful too. In the '90s I encountered Whatchamacallits, which combined crispy rice, dense and stringy caramel, and chocolate, and those were the best. I don't know if they're still around.

My favorite of those is definitely the Skor bar. A Heath bar is basically the same thing but with a thicker crunchy caramel center and a bit thicker chocolate coating. Never heard of Big Hunk, it’s maybe a southwest local bar since it had Spanish on the wrapper. The rest of the bars I have similar ratings as you guys.

The Big Hunk is actually made in Hayward, CA, by the same company that makes the Rocky Road, U-No, Abba-Zaba, and Look. They're not super popular, but I grew up nearby, so I was really familiar with them.

Whitaker's Peanut Slabs are "better" than Hershey's Mr. Goodbar...but we also have Nestle's Chunky bars (raisins and peanuts) that are closer to Peanut Slabs. Skor was created to compete against Heath bars, the name is a reference to Sweden I'm also not big fan of Big Hunk, but I do like it's sister bar: Abba-Zaba (nougat taffy with peanut butter)

If you eat plain popcorn with candy corn, it tastes like a popcorn ball. We use to make popcorn balls. Messy to make but was fun to eat. Eating the popcorn with the candy corn is much easier and you get the same taste.

From Texas here, and growing up Big Hunk was my favorite candy! When I was sick, my mom would always buy me a big hunk and a country time lemonade as my comfort food. I still love them as an adult! Also, for us a Milky Way is a different candy. It is the chocolate and nougat like the three musketeers, but it also has a layer of caramel in it.

If you can find it, the Charleston chew comes in a strawberry flavor. Freeze it then crack it and enjoy. So good. Also the Heath bar is toffee covered in chocolate like the skor bar but a little less crunchy. One of my other favorites is the salted nut roll. The zero bar is good too.

You should definitely try and taste a HERSHEY'S COOKIES 'N CREAM chocolate bar. It's more of a white chocolate bar with cookie pieces mixed in it. Kit Kats are my favorite, but these are right behind kits kats at 2nd place!!

Three Musketeers, when it was first made about a century ago, used to be a true trio of 3 little bars -- chocolate over chocolate mousse, over strawberry mousse and over vanilla mousse. Only the chocolately nougat version exists today and it's now one large bar.

The 3 Musketeers Bar, has been around for years. It was originally dubbed 3 Musketeers, because it came in 3 chocolate covered pieces, with one being the chocolate whip center, the next being a vanilla whip center, and the last being a strawberry whip center.

I'm not sure about New Zealand but in some area's outside the USA ( I think UK and some commonwealth countries?) the 3 musketeers bar is equivalent to our milkyway bar and our milkyway bar is essentially sold as a Mars bar... there all Mars candy bars it's just a branding thing possibly someone else already had a product(s) with similar name(s) ages ago....

Nestle's "Chunky." It's a decadent, trapezoidal chunk of creamy milk chocolate loaded with roasted peanuts and plump, California raisins. A little hard to find sometimes. But, in my opinion, ohh so good. Ghirardelli also used to make white chocolate squares with freeze-dried raspberries. Those were to die for, but I can't find them anywhere any more. Quick, somebody get me a Whittaker's Peanut Slab. I love good candy, and I want to expand my horizons!

We get BOUNTY in Canada and I LOVE it !!!! They dont get BOUNTY in USA though !!! Instead they get ALMOND JOY and MOUNDS which is the dark chocolate version of ALMOND JOY minus the almond.

Man, I remember Bounty! Haven't seen them for awhile now... Love almond joy though! My favorite is Mallow Cups. Never thought of the payday as being salty. Us Americans must be used to massive amounts of salt. Skor bars are awesome! I have a dessert recipe that calls for broken pieces of Skor throughout and on top of it. Yum! Skör is Swedish for brittle. But the "O" is meant to have dots above it. Which is believed to be why the "O" is highlighted with a crown. To signify its markings on the top of the "O". It is actually pronounced with a "u" sound. Although most English speakers say it the way it looks. A lot of people believe it originated in Canada. But, Hershey originally released it in the US. It's very similar to the heath bar. But heath uses English toffee instead of butter toffee. Although they are virtually identical they are both made by Hershey.

I KNEW you were going to say The Goonies the minute you said it's close to your heart, Sam. It IS a touching and learning moment for both Chunk and his new friend. I like Mr. Goodbar...the simple, few ingredients, but done well. Enough nuts, smooth chocolate..it works. Like Rolo or Milk Duds...sometimes the simple is perfectly elegant as it is, unadorned. Then sometimes you just want over the top. Cadbury Fruit and Nut bars...oh heaven.
