I concur: Isle of man TT races are insane. As a novice racer when I was young racing in WERA, even at our level those suites are no joke and are marvels of science as far as knowing how to save limbs and lives. I raced the Honda 929rr when it was new and Isle of man TT races are insane to me even back then.

Yes defiantly watch the TT it is truly insane. they even have medical staff that ride the same bikes as the competitors because they can get there faster than the helicopters and its difficult to land them most places on the course. the medical staff will do 200mph to respond to the crashes..... The whole thing is wonderfully insane

Have had my share. Some I do not even remember. To me, my gear is key. I do not go cheap on it. Almost spend more on my gear than my bike. Like a thousand on the leathers and 700 on the helmet. Then the boots and gloves, back protector etc... For me, the helmet was was savior. I won't skimp on it ever. Saved me.

The leathers really do give great protection, especially against slides or "Lowsides" as we call them. "High sides" or crashes where you go airborne or over the handle bars are where you are in serious danger of getting injured.

Thankfully there has been a lot of advance in passive and active protection in the suits to help against impact injury. The latest armor padding and airbag systems have made a massive reduction in trauma caused by impacts.

The motorcycle equivalent of Formula I auto racing is MotoGP, where the bikes are custom designed from the ground up, and typically weigh less than 275 pounds (with fuel,) but have well over 200 HP. The design of the bikes and tires allow the bike to be leaned over at angles less than 45 degrees from horizontal, and the riders often lean so far off the motorcycles (to move the center of gravity to the inside of the turn,) they often drag their elbows, and occasionally hit their shoulders on the pavement. AMA Superbike racing is the highest level of racing in the US, and some of the best Superbike riders eventually make their way to MotoGP.

My worst was at Barber Motorsports park in 2002. About 110-115MPH. Tucked the front end avoiding a lapper and away we went!! Broke my right shoulder and a rib when I hit the pavement and then the bike broke a bone in my left hand bouncing around in the grass. My gear kept my skin intact with no abrasions. My helmet saved my life.

Look into Evel Knievel videos from the 60s and 70s. He was an American daredevil motorcycle rider who jumped over things from buses, cars, fountains, and attempted to jump across a canyon. He survived his career but had several bad crashes. It is said he broke nearly every bone in his body at some point. He passed away a few years ago.

Superbike and Top Fuel Dragsters are probably the most dangerous motorsports. You see why with bikes. Top fuel drag cars like to occasionally detonate/plow directly into a wall/literally take off from the ground. Everything thinks F1 drivers are insane, at least in F1 you have a cage.

To soothe your nerves, it is actually extremely rare these days for a motorcycle rider to get seriously injured. A lot of crashes are what are called "lowsides," where you're leaning into a corner and the front end slides out, putting you down on the ground. The protective clothing is made of extremely tough leather, usually multi-layered cowhide reinforced with kevlar. They also wear hard and soft armor under the suits, including spine protectors, chest plates, shoulder, elbow and forearm armor, hip and knee armor, and have special hard "pucks" on the outside of their knees to slide on. The more dangerous crash is a "highside," where the back wheel slips out during cornering, gets the bike completely sideways, and then grips suddenly and hard, and catapults the rider off. The injuries in a highside don't actually come from the speed or the slide, but from the fall from height, because you can get catapulted up to 15-20 feet into the air if it's a really fast corner. That's the purpose of all the hard and soft armor, is to distribute the force of impact through deflection and destruction and dissipate it before it reaches the body. The final type of crash, and the one that is the most lethal, is a sudden deceleration crash, aka an impact crash, aka "hitting a brick wall." Thankfully most circuits have generous runoff areas and gravel traps to slow the rider and/or bike down. But, go to the Ulster Grand Prix road race, the Macau Grand Prix, or the Isle of Man TT, and you see these guys riding within inches of brick walls, and yes, people do die. But, and this takes a rider's perspective and may not sound entirely sane, they die happy. They die pushing the limits, feeling the buzz of being on the razor's edge, of being a whisper's moment away from death. You said in the video at 4:14 that "you'd have to love it." I can confirm, we do.

I’m sure someone has already commented ...... we wear heavy leather suits that used 1.3mm thick leather . Also it has CE approved armor in the back, elbows , arms and hips. Also the boots have inner supports to keep your ankles protected . Also there are stand alone back protectors and air bag systems now. It’s a risk every time we go onto the track. But it’s a love and a passion that cannot be explained.

In case you didn’t know. Most of these riders don’t get hurt because of their leathers. Like you said early in the video, the suit allows them to slide with very little or no injuries at all. However if they go airborne and tumble, then that could cause some serious injury and that’s extremely dangerous. There’s a saying in the Motorsport community “dress for the slide, not the ride” I’m absolutely astounded whenever I see a rider on the road wearing a t-shirt and blue jeans😂 anyways just to clarify I’m not a biker myself so I don’t know to much, just thought I would give you the little information I do know👍😎

I've been riding a long time (I'm 50) and there are no small bike accidents. I've had two. Once run off the road by high school kids who changed lanes into me and once with a big dog that ran out between cars while I was going 45mph. All you see for the first few seconds? Sky, pavement, sky, pavement. Haha. Lots of fun. Lots of road rash (I'm in Florida - too hot for leathers 90% of the year). Plenty of broken bones. Still riding. I guess "crazy" is in the blood. ;-)

Regarding their protection: All motorcycle racing classes and groups, if they want any serious traction, abide by the FIM (Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme) safety guidelines. These guidelines REQUIRE helmets that are tested way way WAY beyond what could reasonably happen to a rider's head in terms of penetration and impact. They also REQUIRE full-body one-piece race suits made out race-grade leather (usually kangaroo or cow hide) at a prescribed thickness across parts of the suit. The suit also must have armor in the shins, knees, hips, forearms, elbows, shoulders, and spine. This armor MUST be CE grade 1 at the minimum (which is very strong), preferred CE grade 2 (which is nigh on indestructible). Gauntlet gloves with full armor and full race-spec boots must also be worn. New regulations for MotoGP (the top motorcycle racing class, kind of line Formula 1 for bike) also require riders to have suits equipped with protective airbags that deploy to support the spine, ribs, and neck during a crash. In terms of crashes, the ones where they lay down the bike and slide along are called "lowsides." These usually do not amount to any injuries of note, except maybe some light burns from heat transfer through the suit. The much, much more dangerous ones are where the bike's rear wheel starts to slide, then suddenly catches while the bike is sideways, catapulting the rider into the air in what is known as a "highside." And the bulk of injuries here don't come from speed, but quite literally from falling 6-10 feet up into the air onto an unforgiving tarmac surface. The riders are quite safe, but as with every motorsport, there is risk involved.

"I assume that their suits protect them from gravel and whatnot" Yes, their suits are typically made of kevlar reinforced leather and also have additional protection in the jointed areas of the suits (knees, elbows, shoulders etc.) As motorcycle racing is far more likely to have riders sustaining serious injuries than NASCAR drivers and any racing teams that race in cars

The only funny motorcycle story that I an aware of is something that happened to my brother. He attended an international conference in New Zealand and after the conference was over he spent 2 weeks on extended vacation touring around the North and South Islands. He loved it while there but the funny occasion occurred when he stopped for a break, took off his bike gloves and hung them across the handlebars. He went into a store and grabbed a drink and came out just in time to see a parrot coming flying in and grab the gloves and go flying off. He had a camera in his bag and took pictures of the parrot up in a tree with his gloves. He loved it after the fact but during the time he was annoyed because he had to buy new gloves.

Its intresting to se the reaction from some1 with very little knowledge on bike racing. Most of these are the every day mistakes if u could call them that. Braking to late, front tyre lossing grip, bumping into someone else so they losses balance. The riders have build in airbags in there leather suit to reduce impact force if they crash. Even though the crashes happen in high speed and in corners most of them are just a small impact and the rest is slidding untill u stop and those are 99% of the time nothing more then a little dmg to there suit and maybe a sore arm/leg. The dangerous crashes that have the highest risk of injury are what is known as a highsider. This mostly happen during hard braking when the rear losses grip and starting to swing from side to side so mutch that the rider is getting thrown over the handle bar up in the air and then lands hard on the asphalt. 1 of the most common injury in this situation is a broken collerbone as the rider for the most part is landing on there shoulder in this type of crash. The main reson this type of crash is so dangerous is becouse the rider isent just falling onto the asphalt but is instead catapulted up in the air by the bikes movements and then slams back down into the asphalt with mutch greater force.
