We have an ongoing joke in Europe about Belgium. Literally noone, not even the "Belgians" (tbh, at this point I have no clue how to call them) have an idea why and how their country still exists. It just doesnt make any sense :P Fun fact: In the past 15 years Belgium had no government for almost 2 years. If you drive from my parents in Limburg Flanders to the south 4 villages later the language spoken is french and 4 villages further it is German. If you drive north east in about 20 minutes you go from Belgium to the Netherlands to Germany. And now the fun fact. According to the constitution the Belgian flag is red yellow black. Everyone including the king flies it backwards.

In fact there are 3 communities in Belgium... besides flemish and french there is a german community as well...there is even a flemish enclave in the netherlands Baarle-Hertog...there is a flemish enclave in Wallonia and a french enclave in the flemish part...the german part was given to Belgium after WW2

the reason why we can't split is because the walloons are financialy depending on the flemmish and won't allow it, it's becoming nearly impossible to form a federal government though so next election 2024 we may finaly start splitting up

The same applies for Brussels. They receive money from Flanders as well. Despite that, I bet you want Brussels to be part of the 'new' Flanders. Whilst it would be preferably the financial transfer stops and both Brussels and Wallonia don't need the money anymore. It ain't a good enough reason for Belgium to break up. The benefits (especially long term) outweigh the negatives. I'm a proud fleming, but also a proud belgian. In any case, if we look at how the the cost of sponsoring sun panels by the belgian state was silently backdoor'ed into everyone's energy bill. How the belgian state now sponsors those that can afford electric cars with the people's money, ... . The transfer of money from flanders to the other regions is probably a drop in the bucket. If all the dirt was made clean, the bad corrupt politics cleaned up. We would have a lot more money for education, pension, energy, housing and so on. As such, this focus on breaking up Belgium seems nonsensical to me. It won't benefit us longterm and there are a lot of other things the news should be shedding light on. Alas the newsreporting these days isn't much to talk home about. Just headlines read aloud a couple of times, with no real info.

The historical explanation is not correct. Flanders never were part of the Netherlands and were a very prosperous region in the 13th until the 15h century. Gent was at a certain moment the second biggest town of western Europe after Paris. Etc....

Wim caubergs, the name "The Netherlands" used in the middle ages was in Dutch "De Nederlanden" and was not an independent state, while the independant state is called "Nederland"

He wasn't uncorrect cause we joined het plackaat van verlatinghe in 1581 wer the Netherlands and flanders joined together.. Alexander Farnese took it back , we also bin part of the united kingdom of the Netherlands from 1815 untill 1830.

I am from flanders and i can say without a doubt that there is a low sense of nationalism here, but there is something known as flemish nationalism which is very strong. Belgium might be split into flanders and wallonia because of this nationalism. Also, Bruges was together with Paris the most developed place on earth in the 16th century and very famous for it’s silk industry. There are many medieval sights to see here in flanders, typically Bruges ghent and antwerp. Belgium is the land of beer, chocolate, waffles, comic books and yew fries. Small fact about fries: we have frituur’s (= frie hours) which are basically small stores which you can compare to fast food stands where every belgian goes once a week typically when they’re lazy and get some take away fries with special meat products like a viandel, frikandel, julien’tje. It would be such a succes in other countries, believe me. Another classic flemish dish here is our stew (flemish stew) and omg is it good. Just look it up, it’s worth a shot. You can make it in many different ways. My dad puts some beer and chocolate in the mix + he lets it rest for 1 day before serving it. Everyone has a different way of doing it and it’s the best thing ever. If there are anymore questions please let me know since this video skips a lot of awesome facts.
