@@Themustangturtledude I went to a system blue camp in 2015 and somebody asked about it. As far as I remember, Scojo said that in 2013 Brandon had the hands to be on the line but was so young (15) that they weren't sure if he could handle the mental/physical demands of being on the BD snare line. They encouraged him to get experience elsewhere to be sure he was ready. Also, the Academy is an incredible corps with a fantastic drumline and nobody's talent is wasted by marching there, even if they have the hands to be on a championship line.

@ Courtney....the short snare player at the left of the screen at 3:21 was only 16 years old at the time. Brandon Olander has been filmed hanging with the snare line from 2010....on show music...at 12!! He ended up winning 3 championships (would've been 4 had he not taken a year off in 2017 for school), center snare (section leader) his last 2 years, and winning the individual & ensemble competition twice, as well as high percussion. Quite the skills....especially since he has scoliosis.

@samsignorelli
@samsignorelli 4 жыл бұрын
And the significant thing about it is the direction in which the form turned. Usually the corps will form a straight line on a yard line, using it as a guide so the firm starts out straight. Then it rotates to "horizontal" -- parallel to the sidelines. This has the effect of hiding someone slightly out of the form, since it's MUCH more difficult to see that when the line is parallel to the sidelines. However, here the line started at an angle -- no line references during the setup -- and rotated to the vertical. Yes, they ended up on a yard line, but half of the guys were going backwards and could not SEE the line coming up. Even with the exposure of the line moving to the vertical....straight as an arrow. Deceptively difficult at the best of times. Amazing here.

I became a Blue Devils fan in 1976, the first time I saw them. My favorite show of all time is still their nearly flawless performance of 1980. There has been a certain amount of envy of this corps due to them winning more than any other. There was also a brief period where they sort of went off the rails and lost much of the crowd, doing extremely esoteric and distant shows. However, of all the shows they have ever done, this one was clearly their most deserving win. Absolutely everything clicked, and every detail worked across the board. I saw them two weeks before this in Atlanta and was blown away then. There are corps who transformed the activity, revolutionizing the way they marched, bringing storytelling to the field, changing music, and so on. The Blue Devils are not one of these corps. Rather than revolutionize a certain aspect of the activity, this corps set the bar for sheer excellence. They did it with their first championship in 1976 and never looked back. Over the last 44 years, they have won 19 championships and have never finished lower than fifth place.

I think they legit scored somewhere in the high 80s and 10-pointed us at our home show and they still had a month+ left in the season. You just knew after that night that they were gonna win. Even if you were to remove all the politics of show design from the activity, their musical execution was just near impeccable and still easily deserving of the championship.

This show, "Fellinisesque" was a homage to Federico Fellini, one of the greatest movie makers in history. The show designers captured the feel of a Fellini set, so if you look closely the entire thing feels like a movie set with the guard as the crew and company. Story time. I was at the Glendora CA show, June 2014. There was this older couple maybe late 50s early 60s. Super nice couple very friendly. They were on a DCI tour traveling around the country seeing shows. They had just flown in from Pennsylvania i believe, where the previous night they saw the Bluecoats "Tilt" show. The couple was telling us how the Bluecoats are on fire and the Pitch Bend is amazing etc. Just raving about the Coats and rightfully so. Then a few hours later, Blue Devils and Felliniesque took the field and just tore the house down. When they finished to a standing ovation, the couple just shook their head in amazement, and told us they had spoke too soon lol. They said BD is going to win it all as no show on planet earth to include Tilt is coming close to Felliniesque. The couple gave some final well wishes and left. And the crazy part was BD didn't perform last that night, SCV did! They didn't even stay for Vanguard. They had seen all they needed to see. And they walked away saying the same thing alot of us was saying that night.............Felliniesque is the greatest performance i have ever seen live.

You've really gotta come to the 2021 DCI Championships, sadly the 2020 season was cancelled so everyone is really going to be bringing Thier A game in 2021. The theme of this show is pretty much a summery of the movies made by the movie director known as Fellini. This is pretty much showing the vibes you get from watching a movie directed by fellini. Well...you just saw the greatest DCI show of all time. I’ve watched this show countless times and there are only 2 parts that were not clean, the rifle throw in the guard and when the girls were playing the tambourines. I was there live this year and this was a record year, obviously the highest scoring first place but also the highest scoring 2nd place show ever, which was blue coats tilt which you watched. 2013-2016 were just absolutely incredible years for the corps.

Highest scoring 2nd place show ever is BD in 2004. 98.525 BD also holds the highest 3rd place score with 97.7 in 1998.

What about 17? Metamorph was pretty close to as clean as Felliniesque, but the design was better imo. I mean, Metamorph is my #1 favorite show, but Felliniesque is #2 lol

Fun Fact about the Battery. Brandon Olander is marching Snare Drum in this at 16 years old I believe. Very young for a Blue Devil member ON Battery.

2:06 I was in marching band in high school. (Yes I know it's not the same thing as DCI, but hear me out) I can't remember if we ever did circles in any of our drills, but I do remember we did quite a few round shapes. I can tell you that it is indeed not easy to pull those off, let alone circles. In fact, I distinctly remember the opening set for the 2013 show my freshman year was the tree from the movie Avatar (the blue people one) and I was dead center on the 50 yard line. 🙂

They were insanely clean this year. That 99.65/100 was earned. Basically they only missed .35 points out of 100 scoring perfectly in Visual, General Effect, and Percussion if I recall correctly. The shapes you referred to are called drill. The blue devils are widely known for being one of the cleanest corps year in and year out. Another thing that’s cool that you might pick up on as you watch more DCI is that each corps has a signature sound. Blue devils utilize screamers a lot and use jazz harmony in many shows, resulting in a top heavy sound. Santa Clara Vanguard is known for their aggressive, punchy sound which comes from their midrange brass (baritones and mellophones but especially the latter). Crown is known for their sonorous, symphonic sound that is very balanced across the entire ensemble. There are many different approaches to brass writing and I really love all of them

Percussion was actually their lowest caption, averaging a 19.6 between the 2 judges. SCV won drums that year, and at finals they got an average of 19.75. If BD had gotten SCV's score at finals they would've had a final score of 99.725

I have to say this. This was the highest score in DCI history but what it took to get this is truly amazing. These groups start the season in the 60s or 70s and after 90 points are hard to come by. The fact they got damn near a perfect score is unheard of.

So I know you see my comments on ALL your dci videos, but 2014 was my age out (the last year you can march) and I was in the cavaliers color guard. We are the only remaining all male corps (Madison was all male up until the 2020 season that was canceled due to COVID). The first show we had with BD that season I swear to god EVERY SINGLE BOY on the cavaliers color guard wanted to be on the tambourine line. We were THROWN by the sheer audaaaaaacity of it. Just full sex. I loved it so much. Thank you for watching this!!

Idk if you are interested in watching colorguard? If so there is a organization called wgi, they also have percussion and marching winds but it is mainly colorguard (the acronym stands for Winter guard international). If you would be interested in viewing a couple guards i would look at AMP Winterguard and Pride of Cincinnati. If you decide to make videos on them I would LIVE for it. But it’s okay if you don’t I just thought to recommend wgi to you since you seem to like the marching arts so much. Much love ❤️

Wow I'm loving these reaction vids to Drum Corps :). SUBBED. This isn't my favorite show but it IS however one of the cleanest shows that I can think of. Props to them and that score. Well earned. People just dont know how hard it really is to make a simple looking block or line formation let alone circles while doing all this. It's realllly hard.

BD did use a lot of old-school drill ( late 1980's to late 1990's ) in this program. They used rotating boxes ( 1-4 groups of 16 MMs rotating 90° ), box peel-off ( 25-36 MMs rotating and peeling off outer side of square ) , and line geometry ( lots of small lines of MMs rotating and breaking off or coming together. ) BD came out so strong at the beginning of the year and there was no way to go but up from there. There were some minor problems in the finals performance that should have resulted in a few more tenths deduction but, with 2nd place being 2 points behind, those little mistakes wouldn't have changed the outcome. Here is another term for you... Goo. Goo is the word we use for all of the low sound reinforcement used in this program generated by synthesizers and not the actual Contras/Tubas. They only march 8 or 12 Contras, so they use a little more goo than other corps that march 16. The last video I watched mentioned trumpet screamers ( trumpet playing extreme high notes ). BD usually has 3 or 4 that can hit the stratosphere in any given year.
