@Jackson Carpenter Sure. Its a part of the 1st Responder community that came about a number of years ago. So the thin blue line represents the men and women of law enforcement who stand in the gap between the lawless and the innocent. There is actually a color to represent every 1st responder group. Red line for Fire. Gold line for Dispatchers. White line for EMS. Grey for Corrections.

It is important to remember that at the outbreak of the war they were not fighting for independence. They were fighting to be treated as full English citizens, with a voice in how they were governed. They were willing to lay down their lives for liberty, but were not seeking independence (yet). The taxes were offensive to them not for how high they were (they were not that high), but because English common law guaranteed a person being taxed the right to help decide how they were taxed. But as a colonist they didn't have representation in parliament. Representation was a difficult matter. With the American population approaching 50% of that of England and growing fast adding the American colonists representatives directly to parliament would be a major shake-up in the balance of power. And to make matters worse, if land ownership was used in any formula for calculating representation the massive amount of land in the American colonies could turn them all into voters. Intelligent people foresaw an England where the population at home would become a minority dominated by British citizens living outside of the homeland. There were attempts at compromise, but they were poorly designed and failed. I do living history presentations and sometimes portray a loyalist. It is surprising to Americans today to learn that the idea of independence wasn't popular at first - they're fooled by the modern media into thinking we hated England. We didn't - we hated parliament - and who doesn't at any point in history? This was a civil war, with families being very split on the issues. Brothers fought brothers, literally at times.

What's changed all these years later? People still HATE congress, no effective difference with parliament at the point of the revolution. Those in congress are still more concerned with their own power than they are about getting a job done. Hate how history repeats itself.

Not sure how well known this is but I think it should be mentioned. The 13 colonies did invite Canada "Province of Quebec" to join in the rebellion. They supported the US colonies but refused to join in fears that most of the fighting would take place on their land. In response when the US drafted the Articles of Confederation they left an open invitation for Canada "Province of Quebec" to join as the 14th colony. This is still approved and still legal for Canada to join the US if they agree to the constitution.

This is essentially a good explanation also of where the American love for firearms originated. Most other countries had an army to protect them, Americans didn't, they had to defend themselves through a good majority of this war. A lot of Americans are taught that you should respect your government, but also hold them accountable, NEVER TRUST THEM, and take extreme action when warranted. They are not to be trifled with

Interesting tidbit of information -- some of the more astute leaders of the colonies knew that the "taxation without representation" rally cry was effective at gathering popular support. However, these same leaders really did NOT want taxation with representation. The leaders knew that If the colonies could send their representatives to England, they would have been easily outvoted in Parliament on matters of taxation. It was a bad decision by King George III and other British leaders not to grant representation. They could have continue to tax the colonists and perhaps avoided a war.

Based on one of these raids, an apocryphal story that has circulated in various versions states: When Benedict Arnold was leading the forces of the King against his former compatriots in Virginia, among his prisoners was a certain plucky and witty officer, who, in answer to Arnold's question, "What will the Americans do with me if they catch me?" replied, "They will cut off the leg which was wounded when you were fighting so gloriously for the cause of liberty, and bury it with the honors of war, and hang the rest of your body on a gibbet."[1] Benedict Arnold is not mentioned by name on the Boot Monument; the monument thus serves as a form of damnatio memoriae.

It needed a bit of refinement throughout the decades, but it’s why when politicians make (Congress), sign (President), and ok bills (Supreme Court) bills that actually seem to violate our Constitution and Bill of Rights, there are still those of us who are like, “Wait a second, what the heck is this...?”

The American Revolution was different from all other revolutions as it didn't result in the seating of a king, dictator, or supreme ruler. The ideals and results speak for themselves, a system based on separation of powers, specific enumerated government powers, equal representation, and the proclaiming of God given individual rights. "We the People" affirms that the government exists to serve the people, not the other way around like it is for many other nations throughout history. As a first-gen American, I am overjoyed to live in the US. I couldn't think of any other place I would want to be. None of these fundamental ideas or results came into fruition as a result of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution which later resulted in the formation of the USSR. As Ronald Regan so perfectly stated "If we lose freedom here, there is no place to escape to. This is the last stand on Earth"

One major thing that pissed the colonists here off was the fact that Britain demanded such ridiculous taxes when the colonists themselves mostly wound up defending their own lands and often getting pretty serious injuries if you even survived the war. Then when you’re rebuilding your life back home and settling in, you’re demanded to pay extra on every single thing you need for survival. The biggest advantage the colonists had was terrain. When you know your environment better than you know your children, that’s a pretty big deal over an enemy who keeps stumbling over every root and hole.

5:25 the thing I don't understand is we were a British colony, it was their responsibility to protect us. How they thought trying to tax all our money away was going to work? Idfk!

Because much of the fighting in the Seven Years War was in North America, the Members of Parliament were reminded of the existence of the colonies. Up until then most of Parliament simply gave the colonies no thought. And the colonies had been thriving due to that benign neglect. As others have stated, there was a tax issue. In general, the serious taxpayers in Britain were Members of Parliament. They had to be; they were the ones with the money. They were looking for other revenue sources, and they hit on the idea of taxing the colonists. The problem was, at this time everyone in Britain thought of wealth in terms of species; that is, gold or silver coins. But due to Parliament’s own previous policies, there was very little space in the American colonies; most transactions were a combination of barter and credit. Some colonies issued limited paper currency, which basically made the barter-and-credit economy a bit more convenient. To make matters worse, the colonial governments had gone into debt during the war, and they were already collecting local taxes (in specie) to repay the debts. Thus the new taxes from Parliament hit when the colonies had an even worse than usual cash shortage. It is interesting that Mr. Hanover (a.k.a. George III) privately observed just this problem with the Stamp Act, but publicly he did nothing about it. What Parliament ought to have done was to assume the colonies’ war debt, and then tax the colonies for repayment but accept barter/credit/ colonial paper currency. It would have been cumbersome and time-consuming for the British government to convert goods to cash, but it would have been taxation in a form the colonists could actually have paid. Indeed, by eliminating the need to find rare species Parliament would have been praised by most colonists. In hindsight, we can see the souring of relations starting in 1763, but in reality, things had basically been worked out until the tea crisis of late 1774. That was caused by both sides’ escalating overreactions

The Boston Tea Party was a political protest that occurred on December 16, 1773, at Griffin's Wharf in Boston, Massachusetts. American colonists, frustrated and angry at Britain for imposing “taxation without representation,” No tax should tax the populace.

I'm Swedish & Danish, Irish & French, and my ancestors came to America "LEGALLY" in the early 1900's on a ship to Ellis Island in New York, long after the Revolution.... As we all know, some people of England went to North America, and to make a long story short, wanted to start their own country which pissed of the British.... Ok, and then the French & Spanish joined in by moving to North America too, and everyone was fighting, including with the Native Americans (the Indians).... Ok, that's enough because it's a long story.... LOL

It's sad how little we are given details about our history. I am 21 and this is literally the first time I learned that they weren't actual Native Americans who threw the tea off the ship. Our country is so vast with so many people attached to this idea of the country being the best with absolutely no mistakes in the past, and we really need to learn about how many horrible things we did to the natives. We cant change the past, so we need to learn from it, but a lot of people like to ignore it which worsens the problems.

At 7:50 you find the gun answer. Had the colonist let the British take their guns they would never have been able to stand up to them. This is why the right to bare arms is included in the Constitution. This why USA has a gun culture.

(Benjamin Franklin Speaks to John Adams, Sam Adams and John Hancock:) BF: So you want to operate your businesses without someone else taking it over? JA: Yes. BF: And live in your own houses without the fear of someone taking it? JH: Absolutely, yes. BF: You want the, uh, SA: the right... BF: to not be at the whim of a king. SA: Exactly. BF: Well, gentlemen.... I've been in England for more than a decade, and I can assure you that you're not gonna get any of those rights or freedoms from them. You're not talking about defending your rights as Englishmen. You're talking about a new country. JH: A country? BF: Yes. All the colonies united. A new nation. It's the only way it's gonna work. Is that really what you want? JH: - Well, I suppose... JA: - Yes. BF: Well, that, uh, that's an absolutely batshit crazy idea. It's exactly what I want too. So... Let's see if we can sell this idea to anyone else. - Sons of Liberty miniseries (2015)

Something you might like to watch is the film “Last of the Mohicans,” which will give you a taste of what happened during the war. Native Americans taught the Minute Men guerilla warfare instead of just lining up and shooting at each other like the British always did.

Ik you take request on your page BUT if you want: Johnny Cash’s (old famous country singer) poem/song “Ragged Old Flag.” It’s a really inspiring poem about the history of the flag. It was played as a video for the 2017 super bowl. It’s something else!! Probably one of the most patriotic things I’ve ever heard!! I requested it on you website (for free) so there you can find the link.

So, a couple of things right off the bat. It's actually debated as to whether Columbus ever figured out that this wasn't Asia. Some say he did, some say he didn't, but as far as I can tell no one knows for sure and the evidence is conflicting. The fact that he thought this was India is why he called the natives Indians. While it isn't technically correct, Indian is a term that has been largely adopted by native people from the United States, and they actually tend to not like the term Native American because it's too general. CGP Grey has an interesting video about the specifics, but this is something he learned while traveling around the US and visiting Indian reservations to research a video series on them.

Colonists' frustration did not begin in the 1760s. England and France fought many wars in the 1600s and early 1700s. Often times, the French in Canada would raid the colonists in the English territories. And while England provided little military support (most of the battles were in Europe), they were taxing the American colonists to pay for the war efforts. On some occasions, young colonists were conscripted into the English Navy. The point is, the animosity toward the British government was building up for nearly 100 years before the war broke out.

Had the English just gone to the colonial legislatures and told them to raise the taxes that England needed, the whole revolution could have been avoided. Thanks to a century of benign neglect from England the colonies got used to a degree of self rule. The English Parliament decided that had to end and tried to exercise direct rule. As you can see, that didn't end well.
