In 1971, a player actually did die in an NFL game. His name was Chuck Hughes, playing for the Eagles against the Bears, he had a heart attack on the field. No hit was involved, he had a pre-existing condition.

@@Macdelaven You're right. I was one year old, so I don't remember it, I googled it. He was born in Philadelphia, so I saw "Philadelphia" and mentally put him on the Eagles. He collapsed in front of recently departed Dick Butkus of the Bears, so I got that part right.

@@Macdelaven I do too. In fact, we were watching the game live on CBS. I was nine at the time and saw it was my Dad. The player, Chuck Hughes was an All-American receiver at Texas-El Paso (UTEP) and he had a heart condition. To show you that it was a different time back then, they FINISHED the game. There was a little more than a minute to go in the game. Thankfully times have changed.
@jerrygray64711 ай бұрын
Actually, what he had was cardiac arrest. That's different from a heart attack. If you watch the tackle, he suffered blunt force trauma to the heart. It was a direct hit, which caused an interruption in the electrical rythym of the heart. That will instantly stop the heartbeat. Basically, he dropped dead on the field. Without immediate CPR to restore the heartbeat, he would've been deceased. The staff saved his life. A heart attack is different because it involves blockage in the blood flow to the heart, for example, a clogged artery.

Commotio Cordis is the medical term you thinking of and it is 97% fatal if immediate medical aid isn't rendered in 3 minutes in this case CPR. Damar Hamlin is extremely lucky this happened in 2023 as opposed to in the 90's when it still wasn't understood that well.

I watched it as it happened. I remember celebrating that amazing hit, being someone who played the game growing up, I love seeing hits like that. But as soon I saw his knees buckle my heart sunk into my stomach. I immediately knew something bad was going on. When the NFL announced that the teams had 5 minutes to take the field, fans from all over the country took to their social media feeds and began ripping into the commission and the NFL. None of us, not one single fan wanted to see that game continue.

There has only been one death on the field in an NFL game ever. Chuck Hughes. College Football had 40 between 1900 and 1905. Usually when a player has to be carried off the field on a stretcher or in an ambulance, the game restarts shortly after the player is carried off. It's outside the norm for the NFL to stop a game due to injury. Stopping the game was the right thing to do.

I had a high school teammate with a similar last name in the late 80s. He was expected to contend for a starting slot as a defensive tackle his senior year, but during that summer he was accidentally shot while hunting - by his brother, in the head. Hammer survived, and when graduation day arrived he reached a new goal - he stood up from his wheelchair, and walked across the stage using only a cane for balance, and received his diploma on schedule, on his own feet. Amazing what the human body can do when the spirit never gives up.

God, that was a scary night. And it started so innocuously from my perspective. Just after work, I was doing some stuff on my computer before sitting down for the game and my brother-in-law (who was picking my mom and stepdad up to go to my sister's house) poked his head into my room and said, casually, "We're going. There's an injury timeout, Bengals are up 7-3." He was out of the house before I realized something was wrong. It only took me about two minutes to go from "God I hope we can get the ball back" to "Holy God, I hope to God he's alright" then about two minutes later I was freaked out at how long it was taking. When _I_ heard that line about five minutes to get back, I basically yelled at Sean McDermott, the Bills coach, through the screen, *_"FORFEIT._* No one will blame you."

This is called Commotio Cordis. A physical strike at the exact split second that the heart resets for another beat. It’s one hard hit to do. The only way to fix this is the defibrillator shock and cpr. Fortunately damar got it just in time as you saw the medical staff carry one. A few years ago a law was passed in all 50 states that an emergency automatic defibrillator has to be placed in every building that’s not a house new or old as both a medical emergency device and part of fire safety. Also all games youth, school, and professional have paramedics nearby with a defibrillator in the ambulance or having a defibrillator nearby. It’s called being prepared. At least one person is responsible for medical needs at youth games just in case but it usually amounts to just a few scrapes and scratches but knows how to find everything just in case.
@ronbrooks65473 ай бұрын
Commotio Cordis but it is death. When the heart stops it is defined as death. So he died on the field and they had to restart his heart.
@FlyingMedic922 ай бұрын
This also shows how important immediate CPR is during cardiac arrest. 2 min with no pulse neurological damage occurs. If someone is getting CPR, their heart is not beating or is not beating fast enough to keep them alive. This technically means they are not alive. Thats what makes this such an amazing story and also demonstrated how Rapid CPR saves lives. Had medical staff not recognized the severity of the incident, it would have had a terrible outcome. Also as a note, most people connect heart attack to cardiac arrest. Yes you can have cardiac arrest from a heart attack obviously but not every heart attack causes cardiac arrest. There are dozens more causes of cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest just refers to the heart stopping, no pulse. In Damars case, when he took the hit to the chest, it was hard enough and happened at the exact time during his hearts electrical cycle, to cause an unstable and unsustainable arrhythmia. Its very very rare but it does happen, its called Commotio Cordis. The hit sent his heart into an unstable heart rhythm which was not one that allowed proper oxygenation to his brain. Immediate CPR and defib are the only things that correct the arrhythmia and give the person the best chance of survival. We carry drugs and medications to also help correct any arrhythmia as well as medications to restart the heart, so to speak, and speed up their pulse, but the key to survival is Immediate CPR and defib. All the meds in the world will be unsuccessful, if there is not oxygenated blood getting to the brain.

It was scary I will say that. The way it was handled was terrible. The Bills were losing and had the game finished, or the NFL rules were followed, the Bengals would have won. The Bills were given an advantage, the Bengals should have been the #2 seed. Courtney there was no reason they kept him on the field that long. And yes, they should have removed him and finished the game. When Sean Payton withdrew his players, that is a forfeit by the rules, but they ignored those. If I sound heartless, I am a Chiefs fan, and because of this, the fans of both these teams claimed the NFL gifted the Chiefs with the number 1 seed in the playoffs. The following season Hamlin was on the field in uniform.

@@wesalker3479 So the problem is that the jab is designed to simulate a disease in a way so that your immune system has raised defenses against the real one. Medical Health Today in March said that there's an elevated stroke risk from the shot, that is not as bad as the actual disease's stroke risk. That's about all I can say about that. That's also exactly right for a vaccine, particularly one that was created this soon after we learned of a disease to begin with.
