One of the first responders not a part of EMS/Fire was Denny Kellington. He was a part of the Buffalo Bills training staff, but was the first one to administer CPR to Damar just moments after his collapse. He performed the CPR for roughly 10 minutes, some say he saved Damar’s life. The entire training staff received the Pat Tillman Award for Service, and were on stage with Damar at the ESPYs. I highly recommend watching the speech.

If you wanna look it up his name is Juan Izquierdo, the match was Sao Paulo vs Nacional. Even though he wasn't our player, it hurts, manly because a world class hospital is in front of the stadium. Medical staff took the first approach 5 minutes before he was rushed to the hospital

That’s thanks to CPR and the AED being utilized immediately. Brain/muscle damage during cardiac arrest results from a lack of fresh oxygen being delivered to the tissue because blood is not being circulated through the body when the heart stops. CPR/AEDs just simulate the beating of the heart so the blood continues to circulate through the body and distribute fresh oxygen to the tissues. If he’d not had that, he could’ve still survived but likely would’ve had permanent damage to his brain or body or both. If you have to have a heart attack, other than a hospital, I can’t think of a better place to have one than on the field during an NFL game. They have full medical teams and high-end equipment on hand at all times during a game and an ambulance on standby, so he was in the best of hands.

Just worked up the courage to watch this in the weeks after Hamlin has appeared to have survived the worst of it and begun his recovery. Thank you for putting up and cutting this together in a way that's informative without being exploitative--I and many other fans appreciate it. As a Seahawks fan, I never thought any on-field sight could get scarier than Ricardo Lockette's career-ending neck injury, but this beats it. I hope and pray we don't see anything more terrifying than this on a football field ever again.

If you think about it, on the field there were 2 teams, each team fighting for their ticket to advance towards the “Greatest Show on E” As soon as Damar collapsed, everything and everyone stood still. Two teams became one, they all dropped to their knees praying for Damar. I just wish that everyone, everywhere would live their lives like that. I know I’m living in a dreamland, but instead of Road Wars, Neighborhood Wars and Customer Wars, why, why, why do we have to live our lives in fear? If you see someone in trouble, instead of looking and running the other way, how about running to them until help arrives. I know it’s just wishful thinking but we only have one life, maybe everyone should do as they did on that football field. Wishful thinking? Probably.

To be fair, you don't know what they thought happened. The announcers didn't know he was receiving CPR until several breaks had gone by, it seems reasonable to assume the League office was equally in the dark. Additionally, I can't imagine a decision like that is made at the level below the commissioner, and who knows what info he was given. The referee has the authority to suspend play and he did so after consultations with the two head coaches.

As a lifelong Detroit Lions fan I remember a similar incident in 1971 with Chuck Hughes. Sadly he died from a heart attack during the game. He was also 24 years old.

They had to resusitate Hamlin not once, but twice, on the field. He literally needed help breathing. Amazing that he's playing this year, AND got his 1st touchdown after intercepting the ball, a few games back....

This was a MNF football broadcast on ESPN AND ESPN 2. I watched this whole sequence live with my father. I have seen serious injuries to players like concussions, broken bones. However, this was the 1st time that I saw an ambulance actually being on the field for a life-threatening injury.
@frederalbacon Жыл бұрын
Reggie Brown of the Lions also had an ambulance on the field in the 90s when he suffered a spinal cord contusion and (also) received CPR on the field. Don't blame you for not seeing the ambulance on the field, even though that was also the game Barry broke 2000 rushing yards for the season, it's also the Lions, so no one was watching.

To this day im absolutly furious that the NFL tried to make this game go on. You can see it in the conversations on field. NY was trying to force Mcdernott to get his guys back out there and Mcdermott and Taylor came together and flipped the bird to the shield.

The quick response to the doctors and whoever there giving Hamlin CPR and saving his life is really great to know to see how short life can be. My father died from sudden cardiac arrest. His cardiologist said even if he was in the hospital, with the doctor standing over him, he would at best have a 10% chance. This young man is so, so. Lucky, and I am glad he lived to see another day on and off the field.

So glad the guy is ok. I am a Union Official in Australia, and I can only speak from that perspective, when a worker (lets be honest these players are more like family than co-workers) is injured or god forbid life and death situation on a site, employer shuts down the site and after guaranteeing the workers best care, provides support and counselling to all who need it. Seemed leadership were too in shock to make that call straight away, but it is the only safe and caring decision after an in incident like this.

As someone who works in EMS and has worked several cardiac arrests on all ages. I’m very surprised he made it out without serious brain damage. Most people that come back after a cardiac arrest lose most if not all brain function. Very quick airway control and proper ventilations kept him from being brain dead. Good work to the first responders

Bills fan here. I had a very unique perspective on a few angles of this. I went about an hour and a half east of Buffalo to a close friends in Canandaigua, NY to watch this game because he is a Bengals fan. I am first a NASCAR fan before anything else and a sad reality of that sport is that sometimes that tragic feeling of waiting to see if an athlete is okay or even alive is a semi familiar one and one that I had been through a number times before (most recently with Ryan Newman in 2020). So i found myself kind of having to help out my friend group who hadn't felt that way in a football game before and admittedly it was very jarring to have that feeling during a different sport. My plan that night was to drive home after the game and instead I drove home after the suspension was called and it was the longest drive of my life. I had to get on the phone with a buddy just to keep my mind off it because we still didn't know if we'd just watched someone die. The most unique thing was my next chiropractor appointment (yes ik its a weird one). I was having back issues at the time and had to go weekly. My chiropractor was both a parent of a kid I take care of at work as well as the head chiropractor for the Bills. He talked very little about it and was very clearly haunted by what they saw on field that day. His daughter said at work that when he got home from Cincinnati it was unlike anything she'd ever seen from him where he locked himself away for the night after greeting them and hugging them all very tightly. I attended the Bills next game. Without getting into it too much, the "Nyheim Hines game" was so incredibly healing for our city and Im so glad I got to be there for that. So glad Damar is out there starting now (although thats not always what I say on sundays 😂) but even if he isnt the best thank god he's alive and still able to play!
