You also need a nomination from a source such as a member of congress , the president or vice president. Usually applicants get nominations from their state rep in congress to help them. The acceptance rate each year is very low so it is a huge deal to attend an academy .
@operator0
@operator0 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnglue1744 You can bypass the traditional nomination process and get to the front of the line if one of your parents has a Medal of Honor. You still need the grades and SAT scores though. One of the many perks for that award. West Point is one of the world's premier civil engineering schools. The Naval Academy has one of the world's premier History programs. The Air force Academy has the world's only class that teaches you how to properly sit in a chair. I think that class is mandatory.

Joseph Eddy it’s a huge deal to get invited to both these schools, and it’s intense, the amount of pressure is crazy. But what comes out is one squared away brain. I served under 5 of these graduates and although two of them had a ego the size of a football stadium they still were smart and quick. The other three well I received valuable lessons. You asked “so these are colleges;” the service academies are some of the finest universities in the world. They produce well educated commissioned officers with 4 year bachelor’s degrees, and upon graduation they become active duty officers. It is way beyond highly selective to be able to get into a service academy. The football is only secondary and all of the cadets and midshipmen are on “scholarship,” not just the football players.

The Army-Navy Game is played by the military academy of West Pointe (Army) and the Naval Academy. Think of them as universities where ALL of the students have signed up to join the military, and once they graduate they go into the military or navy as officers. The universities are ran by the military, so the instructors are all military service members as well, and the curriculum combines military training and advanced university courses. The kids who go there are SMART, and they have A LOT of work - think of them as military versions of Harvard and Yale. There have been several presidents and other high profile leaders who graduated from these academies, especially West Pointe.

I love the Army-Navy game. We give it a special place on the college football calendar, with the game being played the week after the conference championships so its the only game that day. There is so much tradition and pageantry in the game, but even more than that its just amazing to watch these guys who gave up having the fun athlete experience at a normal college to instead take a much harder path. During the game they show the service assignments of the seniors, and seeing that it really hits you that many of these guys playing on national TV in front of a crowd of 50,000+ will, in 6 months time, be sent to every far off corner of the world to defend our country. There really is nothing else like it.

Normal civilians can go because I got to go to this past year (which the second video was the intro for). The single coolest football game experience in the United States. I've been to multiple SEC football stadiums, the Rose Bowl, the Cotton Bowl, but absolutely nothing compares to going to the Army-Navy Game. There's nothing like it. One of those games everyone who can needs to go to. You hear the expression "Sing Second" because both teams gather after the game for the singing of both schools' alma mater songs, starting with the team who loses the game first, then the winner second. The excitement of the supporters for the winners is so great to be around. I sat with Navy supporters and their excitement to sing after losing the past three years was so great.

As a U.S. Navy Veteran, on Navy-Army Game day it seems the world stops for 3 hours. Like Brian Braswell said in his post, "This is THE only game where everyone on the field is willing to fight for everyone in the stands". I would add and they fight for everyone watching on T.V. or listening on the radio or on the internet. We have a saying in the U.S. Military, "We are the few who chose to write a 'check' to the Citizens of the United States of America up to and including my life". I am so proud to call myself a United States Navy Veteran. The Greatest Navy in the World!! As John F. Kennedy once said "Ask not what your country can do for you, Ask what can you do for your country!" My paternal Grandfather and I and some of my cousins can say that "I served in This Country's Military Forces". To anyone who is thinking about enlisting into the Military in whatever country you are in, go and try and search for a veterans organization and ask them why did they join? If you do enlist, you will make friends to last a lifetime. GO NAVY!!!! BEAT ARMY!!!! FEAR THE GOAT!!!!

The greatest rivalry in college football. Though it no longer has implications on the national championship game like it did in the past, it's still a big deal. Think of it like this... somewhere around the world there is a person who has no interest in American football. Doesn't care about or cheer for either Alabama or Auburn. Florida, Florida State, or Miami. Michigan or Ohio State. But this person's two grandfathers each served their country. One in the Army and the other in the Navy. This person likes one grandfather better than the other. That individual will cheer for the service of their favorite grandfather. Even someone in your situation for example, because of your engagement to a Marine, you may choose to root for Navy over Army. It's because of situations like those, there are more people interested in the outcome of the Army/Navy game than any state or regional rivalry. Army vet. GO ARMY! BEAT NAVY. 😎👍

The service academies are federal institutions that provide an undergraduate education and train future commissioned officers for service in the U, S. Armed Forces. Applying to a Military Service Academy is a rigorous, highly competitive, and lengthy process only for the most determined and qualified candidates. They are the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (Army) at West Point NY, the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis MD, the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs CO, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at New London CT, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point NY. To apply prospective students must obtain an official nomination from a United States Congressperson (except Coast Guard). Students (cadets) receive free tuition, books, room and board, medical and dental care, along with a monthly stipend to cover any other living expenses IN EXCHANGE FOR AN ACTIVE DUTY OBLIGATION (after graduation they are commissioned as the lowest rank of commissioned officer in their branch of service). The service obligation is 8 years currently with at least 5 years on active duty and the remaining 3 in the inactive reserve. Different careers in the military may require different time commitments after graduation, however. As for the academy lifestyle, you can expect to have a pretty structured schedule that is strict, conservative, and requires lots of discipline. Cadets are often not able to leave campus unless permission is granted and there are also strict rules in place. Students must participate in mandatory activities from 6 in the morning to 8 in the evening, then finish homework and study after those hours. In addition, cadets must stay on top of their physical endurance and participate in intramural or varsity sports.

These are two of our five military academies. It is four years of college for very bright people who will be officers when they graduate. But it is miltary training and classwork and whatever rank you attain in your class is something that can follow a military officer for as long as he lives so it is highly competitive during those four years. The Army is at West Point, in West Point, NY. The Navy is at Annapolis in Annapolis, Maryland.

When I was in the Army, we would throw Army/Navy game parties that rivaled Super Bowl Parties. I had buddy from High School who was in the Navy and every year we would bet on the game.

West Point is the US Army Military Academy. Annapolis is the US Naval Academy....pretty much every student gets a scholarship to attend the military academies. They do not pay for it...except after graduation they do have to serve for a certain amount of years. The academies are where most of the officers are trained and educated to serve and lead the enlisted.

If you were able to go it would be life-changing you would never look at a football rivalry or the military the same way ever again. If you really want to understand what Army Navy is really all about look at some of the video that has been put on KZbin over the last couple of years then this will all make sense. Thank you for your video reactions and wishing you the best

Each branch of the military has their own academy. Navy/Marine Corps is in Annapolis Maryland. Army is in West Point New York. Air Force is in Colorado Springs Colorado. The Coast Guard is in New London Connecticut. The Merchant Marine is in Kings Point New York. The Coast Guard and Merchant Marines are not military academies, since neither service falls under Department of Defense (DOD), but both are service academies. Each academy is a university with requirements similar to a normal university, but they have additional requirements both academically and otherwise as well as post-graduation requirements as well. Applicants must receive a nomination from a member of Congress, who only get one per year. It is truly the best of the best at each academy. For football, Air Force, Army and Navy compete for the Commander-in-Chief’s trophy. Note, the President is also the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. While both Army and Navy play Air Force each year, the Army-Navy game is unique. It is typically played in Philadelphia (about 1/2 way between the two campuses) and is the last regular season game played. Many believe that it is the perfect college football game because the teams are usually evenly matched; fundamentals and disciplined play are emphasized (naturally); few, if any players will play professionally; and at the end of the game both teams line up to salute the Alma Mater (school song) of first the winning team and then the other as a show of respect.

You were so close in your summary. The team that loses has their Alma Mater played first. If you watch the broadcast everyone makes a big deal about "singing second". But this doesn't just happen for Army Navy football. The Alma Maters get played after every single sporting event between Army and Navy throughout the year.

There are a few highly recognized military colleges with long honorable military academic traditions to include The Citadel, Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and Texas Tech University, but there are ONLY three Military Academies: Army, Navy and Air Force. Of those, there is only ONE rivalry: Army-Navy. You must be a high school student of outstanding and impecable grades and character. You must demonstrate years of documented community service and athletic participation. You must have long written recommendations from the highest respected members and officials of your community and last, but not least, you MUST seek and gain a personal written recommendation and endorsement from your elected member of Congress to even begin to be considered for admission to the Academy of your choice. If admitted, you give up the "normal" civilian college experience to be treated your whole first year as the lowest of the low. You must literally memorize and recite verbatim hundreds of years of military and academy facts, figures, names, dates and history. For ANY infraction (most not even thought of in civilian life) you will perform extra duties on your free time, march long hours to work off "gigs" against you and STILL have to study long hours of math, physics, chemistry, engineering etc., prepare and wear a clean impecable uniform EVERY day, be ready to rise before dawn, participate in daily PT, clean your room and dorm areas, shit, shower and shave before you ever even think of breakfast (imagine eating while sitting fully erect with your chin literally touching your chest) and then be ready for morning formation and classes immediately after, ...all just to start your day in becoming "an officer and a gentleman/woman" in your chosen branch. The Honor Code alone will keep or drive most out. For Academy Midshipmen and Cadets, they have a multi-year obligation to military service and connot use their degrees to earn a private income or seek high-paying careers. They must continue to serve. Even professional athletes like Stabler and Robinson still had to serve their duties first. In the Army, Navy and Marines there are only two events that are considered un-official holiday events where, unless on critical duty, everything and everyone in uniform stops and all watch to support and cheer. They are The NFL Superbowl and The Army-Navy Game, or just "The Game." GO Army! BEAT Navy! (Oh yeah, look up and react to Pat Tillman, if you'd be so kind. I've watched and noted what you best react to and genuinely enjoy. It shouldn't dissapoint you at all.)

You have to have a congressional nomination to even be considered for entry to these schools (Air Force Academy too BTW). Without a 30 on your ACT you basically have no chance (slight exceptions are made for football recruits). These schools are realistically just as hard or harder to get into than Harvard or Yale.

Army, the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, 4-year school that trains the commissioned officers of the U.S. Army. Navy, the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD, 4-year school that trains the commissioned officers of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. Both academies, along with the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and play at the top levels of college sports against other universities and each other. You gain admittance to the service academies by appointment from a member of the U.S. Congress, and are obligated to a minimum of four years service in the U.S. military as a commissioned officer upon graduation.

the service schools are at a disadvantage playing other colleges, and it is a huge deal that they do so well against regular colleges since there are things like weight limits that prevent the service academies from having big offensive & defensive linemen.

I'm retired enlisted Navy, the Army/Navy game is the purest game of ALL... re-read that... of ALL sports. It's about just two things, rivalry and pride. That's it, nothing else. No multi-million dollar paychecks or endorsements are involved. Rivalry and pride. How much purer can a game be? That is the reason that this one game, played one time a year, is the ONLY game in any sport that I watch like a religious event. Ask my family, they can attest to it. I get loud, I cuss, I cheer, I cry, and yes, I get drunk like a good sailor should. HOOYA NAVY! GO NAVY! BEAT ARMY!! HT1(SW/AW), USN Ret.

I went into this video thinking there is no way in hell you could explain this rivalry to someone outside of the States. These two videos are about the best way you can show it. Another element you can take in is the actual game, and how differently they play it compared to the rest of football in 2020. It's just old school. Who wants it more. The fact that these MEN can go from this game to fight a war together is unfathomable in terms of respect.

The Army/Navy game is always held in Philadelphia in December. There is usually snow and freezing temperatures. The Navy team is called the Midshipmen. The Army team is called the Golden Knights. You have to get a recommendation from your member of Congress to get into a military academy. That takes connections.

It doesn't take connections to get a congressional nomination. You have to interview in front of a panel and they evaluate you based on your resume and ability to answer questions during that environment. Army is the Black Knights, the Golden Knights is UCF. Army's mascot is a mule named Black Jack; Navy's is a Goat named Bill. The game is most often played in Philadelphia, but it has been played in DC, New York, Boston, Baltimore.

While there aren’t any scholarships required, your payment to the college is a minimum of 4 years of military service. And you are immediately promoted to and officer once you graduate. But it’s a lot of hard work to attend a military college. On top of a recommendation from a senator, governor, congressman, the Vice President, or the President himself. Good grades, good physical stamina and strength, excellent leadership skills, and the willingness to put everything of the line for your nation are required. GO ARMY BEAT NAVY!!!

Cadets and midshipmen of the American service academies are by definition elite students and remarkable young people. By the numbers, the Coast Guard Academy is actually the most selective - at least it has been in the past. The Air Force and Merchant Marine academies are the other service academies offering military commissions. But the Military Academy (Army) and Naval Academy are the blue bloods, representing the oldest branches of the armed forces. Incidentally, if you were to ask any senior non commissioned officer or warrant officer to give their candid opinion of academy alumni, the response would likely not be favorable. But, you'd better believe that any old timer Command Sergeant Major or Master Chief Petty Officer will be pulling for his own service branch during "The Game".

Appointments to the Military Academy's are made mostly by US congressmen, senators, and senior military. Having outstanding school grades is an absolute must. Only the top 1/2% of school grades are even given the chance for an appointment and becoming a cadet or midshipmen. There were only two appointments given from my high school graduating class in 1960. I could have kicked my sons butt for not accepting an appointment to the Naval Academy from a retired Navy Rear Admiral who was a neighbor in Seattle.
