New Zealand Harness Racing Horses: Johnny Globe & Lordship

Johnny Globe's grand-sire was Globe Derby and he was by Logan Derby out of Sandfast. He was small in stature but as a 3-year-old he won the New Zealand Derby in a race-record 3:15 and the Great Northern Derby by 22 lengths. He won the New Zealand Cup from 48 yards in 1954. He retired after 34 wins in 99 starts, four world records and 15 free-for-all victories. When officially farewelled at Addington in December 1956 in front of a huge crowd, Allan Matson (President of the Trotting Conference) said, "I am sure it is the fervent wish of everyone here that Johnny Globe produces one equal to himself." And he did just that in Lordship.
Lordship was a small but well-formed black and inherited many attributes from his sire, the most important being his toughness. He won six top 2-year-old races and stakes of 7490 pounds. Further success in the following years resulted in New Zealand Cup victories in 1962 and 1966, this one from 42 yards. He was retired at 10-years-of-age with 45 wins and 46 placings from 137 starts for 115,190 dollars in stakes. His 16 free-for-all wins beat his sire by one. As on the track, Lordship proved capable of matching Johnny Globe as a sire, arguably Lord Module being the most well-known of his offspring.

I can still see Johnny Globe arriving at Don and Doris's property in ashurst ....I was sitting on Jimmy the pony...still so clear in my mind from all those years ago.
