And what is the monarchy for you other than another UNELECTED level of government? Primarily, you have a parliamentary system, and a president in such a system is just a representative figure rubber-stamping legislative processes. You can also just leave out that office and have the head of government also be head of state. It's up to you. Why would you have a power hungry president? NZ is a parliamentary democracy, and why would that change after becoming a republic? You have already replaced that terrible Westminster style election system where a party with just 43% of the votes can have a "landslide majority" with the election system from Germany that gurantees proportional representation. And by all accounts, this was hugely successful for your democracy. The German equivalent of your PM is not the president but the chancellor, elected by Parliament. The equivalent of the king is the federal president, elected basically by a joint session of the federal parliament and the federal council of the states. That office is hardly something for people with power hunger. It's an office whose importance rises and falls with the moral authority of its occupant. And whether a country needs a president/monarch at all, is a whole different story... The biggest difference is simply who is the sovereign of the country, you or some remote opera king...

As a New Zealander I am appalled at Jacinda Ardern. Imagine if she was New Zealands head of state 😳 frightening. The best part of having a monarch as head of state is that politicians are held accountable by someone who doesn't strive for power but is born into it and is trained to be unbiased, think on the longest term rather than just keeping themselves in power. And are based in service. A founding that politicians never have. Jacinda is the perfect example. As a Canadian I'm grateful and proud to have monarchy in Canada. I like the fact that we have a shared monarch with New Zealand and the other Realms. I also value having a non political Head of State who's role is to ensure that there is a legitimate PM to lead a government that needs to act within the bounds of the constitution. Since the time of Queen Victoria (and arguably since George III) Canada and New Zealand have had dedicated Monarchs who put their duty first, they serve. Looking south to the great Republic to our southern boarder during the last election, I didn't see politicians putting their country first. I saw violence, selfishness, greed, and anger. I also sensed genuine instability if President Trump wanted to use his power of Commander in Chief to prevent the peaceful transfer of power. I wouldn’t underestimate the importance of the relationship of Maori with ‘Queen Victoria and her successors’. ‘The Crown’ is not just some ephemeral synonym for ‘the government’. It is clear in the Treaty of Waitangi that that relationship is both specific and personal. Whilst a Republican leaning Kiwi myself, I still see value both in the constitutional arrangement and the relationship. I also think that it is vital that the Māori perspective is front and centre in any debate we have. The gains of the last three decades are far too critical to imperil and the realities of a Republican government when we have no written Constitution require a lot of consideration. We are a long way from a solution to that and while the former PM, Sir Geoffrey Palmer has his draft, I am more than cautious about his ivory tower experimentation. He is infamous amongst officials for declaring that the inclusion of reference to the Treaty of Waitangi in State Sector legislation was essentially meaningless in law. It proved to be otherwise.

She's probably right though, the reality is that in this era NZ has very little to gain from being linked to the UK. Economicly NZ seems to be in a far better position than the UK. Per capita kiwis earn more than in the UK. These days on the world stage, the UK is very much thought of as a dieing empire of which it's citizens are clinched to the memory of. One would hope that future NZ has the capacity and sense to declare itself a republic, claim the 2 million hectares of crown land it's own, and form a constitution where by all NZ citizens have equal opportunity within their country.

Can’t imagine why NZ becoming a republic is so important. Not like it’s somehow not an independent country. Always thought it was admirable how NZ, Australia and Canada, along with others, maintained that tie to the UK. While some similar countries in the Caribbean may cut that tie in the years to come, it’s not a surprise. Their relationship to the UK was more complicated and there are still grievances. Don’t think the same holds for NZ/AU/CA. Now that the UK left the EU there is an opportunity to forge a closer bond and not be so dependent on the US.

Like how much praise can one give themselves for banning individual rubbish items that could be solved once with implemented soft plastic recycling systems but instead choose to spend 360 million on television station merging which she loves being on, she's amazingly a terrible prime minister. That's for sure. I think she likes China too much. And the wearing of the head scarf when the mosque was bombed was over the top. She is a butt kisser.

People have traveled from all over the world and seeing older people , disabled and children in the queue. I know is hard for the British people because she has been the only queen they know. I am glad she witnessed her Majesty’s observation of the treaty with New Zealand. Her majesty knew the world changes just like Queen Mary did at her time.

As a British person I would be sad to see New Zealand leave the commonwealth but if that is what they want I hope them all the best. :)

We wouldn’t be leaving the Commonwealth, we just wouldn’t have the King as our head of state any more. Only 15 of the Commonwealth countries do.

The question is not about leaving the Commonwealth, it’s about removing the monarchy and becoming a republic which are two different things.
@marcanderson86692 жыл бұрын
Try looking at it this way mate: Imagine each commonwealth country as an individual, and the group of individuals as a circle of friends just like we all have. If one of that circle of friends, like us Kiwis, decides to do things a bit differently, that doesn't mean they're any less of a friend.

The legacy of the woke movement, which Saint Jacinda represents, will be a renaissance of traditional values and their institutions. The Monarchy will not only survive it will gain popularity. Sure some countries will become republics but my guess is that more developed nations will look at alternatives, strengthen their constitutions, and evolve their relationship to the crown in order to maintain their historical continuity and memory.
