This episode starts out from the foot of Mount Cook in light rain, Tasman Glacier, the source of the Tasman River is our first stop. Glacial deposits, at one time the end of the glacier form a natural dam trapping the milky waters of Tasman Lake. The translucent blue glacial ice melts into the lake giving up debris scoured from the valley sides a hundred or more years ago. This is the stunningly beautiful glacial landscape of Central South Island in the making, just as described by my favourite geography teacher, his description of mother nature in action was actually happening right in front of my eyes. We jumped back into our camper-van to head back along Mount Cook Road, the wide rocky valley bottom is flat, with tumbling rivers flowing from the steep side valleys into the braided Tasman River before it widens into the vivid Turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki . The views from the road over the lake have to be seen to be believed. The lake drains into the man made Pukaki Ohau Canal, once again the sight of bright turquoise water against an otherwise arid landscape, under a dramatic sky creates a vision that perfectly captures the essence of Central South Island. Along the way to Duntroon we pass a series man-made lakes, used to drive the hydro-electric power stations that power most of South Island. Jump in and join us for a
virtual ride through a breath taking landscape.

Hi Peter, the turquoise lakes of Central South Island are unreal, its hard to believe the water is naturally the colour it is, due to the way the sunlight catches the glacial rock flour suspended in the water. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video.

Tim, Years ago, I remember paddling a canoe across Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies. The water was full of suspended silica and a constantly changing kaleidoscope of hues that danced and swirled. The world is a beautiful and awe inspiring place. Keep safe. Peter

Hi Blanka, I hope you are keeping safe and well. New Zealand is amazing, so many natural wonders, from whale watching, to live volcanoes, pretty villages, amazing landscapes and most dangerous of all, they drive on the wrong side of the road 🤦‍♀️😉. For Brits, visiting Australia and New Zealand is a breeze, they speak English and drive on the same side of the road. Have you been able to get out and about yet, or are you still restricted? I've given up on the idea of a foreign holiday this year, the chances of getting stranded are simply too high. Take care and stay safe. Tim.

@@annawitter5161 Hi Anna, I had intended to travel with Dunedin Railways on a holiday/tour train they were running from Dunedin to Picton this year. That has been cancelled and I believe they have returned the Silver Fern diesel multiple unit to KiwiRail. My future travel plans are on hold for now, but if I'm in Christchurch again, I'll let you know, it would be nice to meet for a coffee and cake somewhere. Take care. Tim.

I enjoy watching your channel, it's nice to get an insight into the rail-scene in Brazil, it looks fascinating, I'd love to visit one day. Best wishes. Tim.

Hi Robert, we are enjoying a heat wave here, I'm melting in my workshop, I cool down every now and again by sitting with my feet in a paddling pool in the garden, Lock-down has come at a good time in the UK, hows the weather in Oz? New Zealand has been successful in beating the virus, but at some point its economy will need tourists again, it will be interesting to see how quick they are to let the Chinese in again. A vaccine can't come quick enough, its the only real way that the world will be able to open up again. Take care. Tim.

@@Timsvideochannel1 You need to watch that sort of arrangement that you don't get too much vertical shake. If you can attach the camera with some sort of shock absorbtion, you can get some fairly good video content.

@@neilforbes416 Hi Niel, I was using a GoPro 7 Black Edition for the shots from the windshield, it has anti shake built into the software. Unlike early anti shake software, this really does work, the road was not really as smooth as it appears, the software ironed out the bumps.

Same photo with one doctored up with the glacier with all white top. Yet video shows current glacier with a lot of ash on top. me thinks the ground is warming the ice as well as the ash attracting heat from the sun. Recent world shut down of planes and cars and people indoors yet no change to temperature. The planet has been warming ever since the last big ice age moderated by the mini ice ages. last one in 1645 when people were ice skating down the Thames. Better warming than cooling I think.

All the glaciers in New Zealand are shrinking at the moment, although between the eighties and the early 2000's the Fox Glacier was advancing from 1985 to 2009. In 2006, the average rate of advance was about a metre a week. I keep an open mind about climate change, there is plenty of evidence to say it is a natural phenomenon, although I'm very aware of the thin ozone layer above New Zealand, it doesn't take long to get severe sunburn. The worst pollution I've seen was in Shanghai, that level of pollution must affect the temperature, so weird not to be able to see the sky.
