Waitomo was the first stop of our North Island road trip last winter. Popular for their caves and glowworms, we booked to experience the enchanting - Ruakuri and Waitomo Glowworm Caves.
Unfortunately, taking photos and videos is not permitted inside the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, because this place is sacred to the locals. We walked through the cave before we glided silently through an underground river on a boat while thousands of glowworms glittered around us.
We stayed at the Waitomo Homestead Cabins for the night which is just a 10-minute drive away from the caves. They have several cabins which are perfect for couples, families, and friends. There is a communal villa with a fully functioning kitchen and lounge area.
We explored Ruakuri Cave the next day. The tour started at the man-made spiral entrance, and then we were awed by the limestone formations and got up close with the glow worms.
Both experiences are truly unforgettable and no wonder why Waitomo caves are one of the famous attractions in New Zealand.
