That disallowed goal against the Ferns was just the same as the disallowed goal handed to the Filipinas in their game against Switzerland. That game would also have been different if the Gilliou goal was allowed and the dubious penalty kick was not given to Switzerland.

It just goes to show what a team can be capable of on the biggest stage even with a squad almost entirely made up of players who are not professional. People really forget that in women's football, particularly in a tournament like this, huge numbers of players are not paid a salary to play football and have other jobs around which they must organise training. It requires absolute dedication in a way that many wealthy footballers in the men's game have long forgotten. These footballers train only a few times a week and do not have access to anywhere near the facilities and infrastructure enjoyed by professional players in men's leagues and otherwise. Yet media coverage continues to automatically represent such teams in professional terms. The rest of the picture remains unspoken. I just hope that the fairy tale quality of this win does not obscure the ongoing difficulties faced by those women and girls who want to play football in the Philippines, where there is no overarching strategy or long-term vision and sponsorship opportunities are limited. The World Cup is a potential opportunity for a country to leverage their renewed visibility into improved conditions. There is only so much a team like this can do without better support from their national association and a pipeline for future talent. They deserve it.

Philippines is basketball and boxing lovers.. football sadly no.. so its hard to find star players because in schools you only find few university with football field.. so the national football has no choice but to look for Filipinos abroad that qualify to represent Philippines..
