Newark is a vibe. I always get a early 2000’s NYC feeling when I’m in Newark. It’s got the good, bad, and the fugly.

I was born in Newark lived there as an infant before we moved to the north end of neighboring Hillside because we had extended family there. I'm old enough to remember when the city was stable and vital, then came the 1967 riot and Newark's sad decline that lasted for two-plus decades. I moved to NYC in 1990 when my hometown was at its lowest ebb, feeling it would never revive in my lifetime. It does my heart good to see the improvements there over the past three decades with the positive trend continuing. Newark still has a long way to go, but signs are encouraging. At present, 2023, it's slowly becoming a more desirable place to live. Hopefully, in a generation, Newark will be a city well on the move. I still visit there about 2-3x/year and feel the vibe there much more comfortable than in years past.

I wanted do this before I moved to South Carolina in 2009 to take care of our now deceased parents. The downtown started rebuilding I think in late 1980s, not sure. Downtown Newark, at least when I left, was the safest area of the city. I want to thank you for filming my hometown's downtown area. Brings back so many memories. 😊

You're right, late 80s into 90's and even 2000's. It grew slowly but surely. It's booming💥now, but downtown "Brick City" never died though. Great to see NEWARK us back!

@@jairousl.parkersr.4293 I am happy for Newark's return. In another video in the central ward where I grew up. Went to Clinton Place Junior High graduated 1974. Malcolm X Shabazz High School graduated in 1977. I saw many new buildings along Clinton Avenue. One of my sisters and I were hyped up seeing the very neighborhood we grew up in. South 11th Street about a quarter block from Springfield Avenue. Brought back a lot of memories.

@Grover Mayers Jr Very warming experience, thank you for sharing. I grew up on South 10th St so not far from you but I lived closer to the Clinton Avenue side of the block.

@@BrickCityEllA Yep know exactly where you grew up. Had a classmate who lived i think about the middle of block South 10th Street, between Springfield Ave and Clinton Ave. I think just before those townhouses were built.

Unless if you have no money or disabled, visiting Newark is actually very very easy and there’s a major airport. It’s not like flying to another continent

I loved Newark in the 60s when market street was full of people shopping and the streets were full of holiday design. People were more generous and respectful to each other.I miss mecrory pizza. Woolworth. And market Street was full of all the store open. Now there and empty this and frigid market Street. Where did the happiness and excitement go?☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️
