Newark, New Jersey also known as Brick City earned its nickname from having so many housing projects densely packed into this physically compact city. Beginning in the late 1930's housing projects began to spring up all over the city. However what started out with noble intentions quickly turned into eyesores, essentially breeding grounds for crime and poverty. First the city started demolishing it's high rise projects in as early as 1987 with Scudder Homes. Since then almost all high rise housing projects in Newark have been demolished and replaced with townhome like structures. Former residents either settled in the new complexes or were provided with section 8 vouchers which they could then use with landlords that will accept it. Today we are visiting Mildred E Terrell Homes, a low rise 275 unit housing project comprised of 11 Three story buildings located in Newark's Ironbound section. Built in 1946 this notorious complex known for being a hot spot for gang and drug activity, violence and anything else the inner city offers is slated for demolition. We take a SPOOKY drive through to see if anbody's left!
