February 28, 2015, at 0029 hours Newark Fire Department responded to a report of structure fire at 263 Boyleston Avenue. While responding the dispatcher advised they had received multiple calls reporting fire showing. An off duty fire chief from a neighboring department arrived early and was able to conduct a 360 of the building and provide information regarding the extent of the fire and hazards found.
NFD responded with 3 engines, 2 ladders, 2 medics and 1 chief officer with a total staff of 19 firefighters.
This is house is located on a very narrow street, with cars parked on both sides. This makes apparatus placement even more critical. Very low temperatures (-2 degrees) hampered the fire attack. The home was unoccupied and had a large amount of items stored in it, including two rooms that had stacks of tires in them. This slowed the advance into the structure and also hampered extinguishment of the fire. Additionally, power lines had burned off of the back of the house and was laying in the yard. Unfortunately two firefighters were injured during this fire. Thankfully both were minor in nature, however it serves as a reminder of the dangers of the job.
Special thanks to the members of 1-Unit at Newark Fire Department for their outstanding professionalism.

No, I had the ladder truck back up because it was blocking my view, and I felt pretty confident that we wouldn't need a 105 ft. tower ladder for a 1-story home. The only joke is your narrow vision. Go ahead and make a stupid reply if you are okay with me blocking you forever. I've had enough BS this week to last me a full year. It's your move......

As a IC on scene, he has to be able to see everything that is going on. He isn't worried about the camera not getting to see everything, he is concerned with him not being able to see the scene.

Wow. Just, wow. Matt Mckeon, congratulations. You have just earned "the stupidest comment on KZbin EVER" award. If you're going to make conversation with someone, Chief Decker is not the one you want to pick a fight with. Arguing with David Decker is the worst thing you could ever do. He's a true professional and he's the type of guy who earned everything he's worked his ass off for. Newark Fire & Rescue is one of the best. We should all be so lucky to have a Chief Decker. He's a great firefighter and a great person. He doesn't screw around. I'm guessing that's not the case with you, however

Dave, Looked like they did a great job on this one. Good communications and enough firemen to do the job! Does this dept always wait on the power company to get there and pull power? During my many years I was allowed to pull meter if we had to enter and of course they , the power company was called. We carried a fiberglass power pole and the Chief or asst or Capt where all trained about pulling meter or removing fuse at the top of poles? Just wondered. We worked hard once a year with the power company to train and make sure that no one would get hurt. Many years ago we had a fireman suited up and during his approuch he didn't have his helment on yet and he walked right into a hot line hanging down from a single pole in the yard and it took him down, threw the head down to his foot and he lived , but was in ICU for 3 months in a burn center and he returned back in service a year later. That was 35 years ago, A lot has changed during this time. The very first thing we do when we arrived on the scene of course size up and we have a great lighting system that is turned on the first before any attack is started. That at least gives our men and woman a way to see around the scene and then asap we turn on a second set to light up the entire area. We refused to let anyone move onto a scene without their helment on first...........and if the Chief finds anyone breaking this rule, they are taken out of service for a while until they go through a video training course again that shows a lot of bad things that happen. They only do this once and they don't forget again. \ As I said 35 years ago and we train hard every month and we also review every call within two weeks of the call. I also like that we have built in cameras in the trucks to make sure that we have better training and to CYA , if someone was to get hurt! These video's are very helpful and we appreciate you sharing!, Thanks JE

I laugh myself sick when I hear people complain about the poor job the firefighters are doing. Hello! Fire is an element; firefighters are mere mortals. They are at a disadvantage from the get-go. Despite all the knowledge, experience, and theory of physics of combustion, a fire can "go wrong" anytime. Ultimately, this is something we humans can't know. Although I am not a firefighter, I think I can make the above statement with a certain degree of authority. One of my cousins was a volunteer firefighter in a small town for many years. He would talk about firefighting, and frankly, I was floored by the amount of knowledge he had. But he did say at one point that he has fought fires that defied all the theory he was taught. His viewpoint was that ultimately, when you arrive at a fire, you really don't know what you're in for. He chose to view every fire as unique.

My house caught fire and basically burned down about three weeks ago. Some idiot was frying pancakes three units down (Lived in Townhouses) and started a grease fire. He ran around screaming instead of calling 911, and if I hadn't been awake at 3:00 AM that night I wouldn't have heard it, looked out of my window, and seen smoke pouring out of my building. It was traumatizing and horribly scarring, and I really hope that whoever does have to go through a house fire makes it out okay... They spread fast. yes. You may realize this, but in the moment, they spread instantaneously. I've had a plan in case this happened, or something else bad like it, and I still couldn't think straight and grab my shit and leave! Until now, I still haven't been able to think perfectly clearly.

What idiot fries pancakes at 3:00a.m.?? Further, how much grease was this idiot using? We occasionally fry pancakes, but we use a griddle, and we put about 2 tablespoons of melted butter on the griddle and set the heat to 350 Fahrenheit. Any idiot with half a gnat's brain should know that if you have a grease fire, you take a metal lid and cover the pot that has fire in it. Then you shut the stove off. THEN YOU CALL 911 and get your sorry arse out!!! Then you start knocking on your neighbours doors and get them out!!! THIS IS NOT ....... ROCKET SCIENCE!!!

Looks like a small shack from the front but looking down the driveway it’s probably bigger than it appears. Luckily there was sufficient space on the left so the house next door didn’t catch fire. Fire danger is just as real today as it was 100 years ago when some of these houses were built, so I can’t understand why some municipalities allowed wood frame houses to be built so close together as I’ve seen in some other videos.

When I was a girl we had a park just a hop skip and a jump across from our home and the Fire House was on the other side of the park. My newbie question always is, why not put more water on the external flames on the left side of the house sooner, so that it doesn’t keep growing? The answer I think is that you don’t want to put a lot of water in while people are inside. But can’t they just spray it on the outside of the house, not necessarily deep inside where people are? Wouldn’t that help stop the spread and knock it down quickly and actually make it safer for those still inside?

My only thought is when you called for a 3rd line the two guys took their time getting their head gear on and can't they see the fire growing at the back of the building? The minute you called everyone out of the house it took 30 seconds to bring the fire under control from the outside. At 14:05 that guy should have sprayed the outside of the building with the 3rd line. 15:05 those two guys can clearly see the fire to their left and yet walk inside and at that point you have to call all men out of building. Why can't those two men shoot water on the fire without getting there head gear in place. If I was a homeowner and I had a fire hose I would be there putting the fire out in my pajamas.
@commandvisionfire
@commandvisionfire 5 жыл бұрын
Good question. First I wouldn't say that crew took their time. On the morning of this fire the temperature was -20 degrees. Several crew members had problems with their SCBA malfunctioning due to the cold temperatures. One of the crew members that you are referring to actually had to remove ice from the inside of his mask prior to donning it. The ice was likely from either over-spray from a hose stream, or water spraying out of the hydrant when they turned the hydrant on. So, there are a couple of things that factor into your question. I requested that crew to advance the third line to the interior and assist the interior crew. It is very important to always support the interior crews so that they do not get overrun by fire. Once I give that assignment they are not free to do much of anything else except what I have ordered them to do. Also, we do not typically spray water from the outside while we have crews inside. There is a risk of causing injury to the interior crews. On this fire we actually had a firefighter working inside, get hit in the head with a stream of water hard enough that it ripped his helmet off and sent it across the inside of house (you can see him exit at the 16:02 mark without a helmet). Upon ordering everybody out of the house, their job is to back out and be ready to assist the evacuating crews should an emergency arise. I cannot stress the importance of having disciplined companies who do not freelance. This causes havoc on the fireground and increases the chances of something going wrong. Once we had confirmed everybody was out of the building they hit the fire from the outside. Thanks, and stay safe.

Question, when you have say ladder 2, medic 2, ladder 3, rescue 3, is the number the designator of their station? Here the paid are similar to that but huge area so up to something like 530 for station number but the volunteer/rural is brigade name vehicle category and if need alpha, bravo etc for multiples. The paid brigade numbers here seem to be alphabetically ascending as well.

I was wondering 2 things. I notice that a lot of people park on the street. Why do they not park in their driveway? I have been up north before and notice that. I live in the south people do not park on the street. Parking on the street seems like it would have many negatives. Also what did you see that made you decide to make the crews on the inside come out? Thanks for the video.
@commandvisionfire
@commandvisionfire 5 жыл бұрын
Two good questions. This is an old neighborhood. I'm guessing the houses on this street are 100 years old. So very few of these houses have garages or driveways. This particular street is very narrow with parking on both sides of the street. Newark is a very old city (200+ years old) with all of the old streets having on street parking. As far as ordering crews out. These guys have a pretty fair amount of fire experience. They had two lines in operation and had been interior for about 10 minutes. They were calling for a third line and the fire was getting bigger. I just felt like something wasn't right. This house wasn't that big but continued to burn on the back of the house. I went with my gut and ordered everybody out. As it turned out, the room at the back of the house was full of car tires. Take care and stay safe.

David Decker Oh wow! Wonder why someone would have tires in their house. You did say there was a report that their may have been someone inside. Did you ever find the owner? What happens if you do find someone who has died in the fire are they burned up or intact but haves died from smoke? Are they left in the house until the fire is out? Hope I am not asking to many questions. Thanks!

@@lidsman2221 The occupant had recently been placed in a nursing home. If we find somebody inside who is obviously dead, as in beyond help, we leave them in place. It then become a crime scene, so we don't want to disturb the body.

Ha,ha,ha,ha... Yeah! Why didn't those those idiots in the 1800's include off street parking?!? Couldn't they see that in 100 years that parking would be a problem? It's just like my house here in the North Side of Pittsburgh, built in 1878, Those near sighted idiots DID NOT include CAT-5E wiring when they had the walls open for piping gas for lights, But NO provision for LED!!! Clearly a well-trained and disciplined department. Good incident command and everybody goes about their assigned duties in a calm, efficient and businesslike manner. No running around, shouting or other evidence of panic. One takeaway for me was the initial interior attack crew maybe should have reported packrat conditions slowing their advance. That may have led the IC to have one hose line cool down the fire at the rear and second story, instead of pushing three lines into the interior. Also, not sure I would re-position the truck just to keep a clear view from the BC's rig.

No winter parking ban? Here in Nova Scotia it is illegal to park on the streets overnight during the winter and is strictly enforced if there are snow banks. That way fire, cops and ambulances can get around ...

I was picking up on too many red flags and just had a bad feeling. We were 10 minutes into the attack with 2 lines flowing and the fire wasn't going out. Fire was getting much worse on the back of the house. Just had a gut feeling that we needed to pull out regroup and switch to defensive to knock down the fire at the back of the house.
