As an ultralight operator who lost a friend to slow turns near the ground, I was nervous seeing this gentleman flying so slowly! Agreed, keep your airspeed well above stall when turning. I figured he must have prior flying experience, seeing how he never overcontrolled this Quicksilver. It's a forgiving aircraft, but I strongly, strongly recommend people get training before trying this! You might survive a crash OK, but crashes are expensive. (I speak from experience. ;-)

@@johnj8083 I would call Vickie at the USUA (United States Ultralight Association) and ask her about any instructors in your area. I fully agree with everything you said. I took Ultralight training many years ago and soloed. I would have kept it up but that is an expensive sport because one needs to fly at least two hours per week to keep your skills sharp Anyway, they look so safe and simple BUT one can easily be killed on one. Yes, they are generly safe IF the pilot is trained, alert and cautious.

As a pilot (Comm/inst, SEL, 320 TT) I could tell he knew what he was doing. An ultralight is quite easy to learn quickly for a fixed wing pilot with knowledge of aerodynamics and airplane operation.

is that the book that states your altitude control is your throttle NOT the elevator? sure. if you have no throttle you're going DOWN regardless of your elevator (which is actually the angle of attack control).
@rex8255
@rex8255 Жыл бұрын
@@leecowell8165 My comment was indicating that learning to deal with stalls is key, and that in general "Stick and Rudder". And the book does teach the idea that the throttle controls altitude, and the elevator is your speed control while in flight. Obviously, you're not going anywhere if you're on the ground with the engine idling. But once in flight, let's say 90 mph is a good cruise speed for the aircraft you're flying. You can use the elevator to maintain speed (if you increase angle of attack you'll slow up, and if you decrease it you'll go faster). So if you want to climb, you open the throttle a bit more, and to decrease altitude close it. For most of my landings, I'd have the throttle fully closed, and use the elevator to maintain the 70mph I was shooting for on landing. The most basic idea of the book is to create a mental model that, even if it might make an engineer cringe a bit, enables a pilot to control their aircraft well. He uses the example of some of the early automobile drivers that would pull back on the steering wheel as if it were a horses rains because that's the model they had in their head, and they hadn't quite gotten the "put foot on break pedal" model working yet. Hope I didn't go on to much, but I had SO much fun applying what I learned in that book, AND I'm still alive to talk about (also thanks to Roger Kuykendal, CFI) so I guess it worked out!

He accidentally got airborne and was forced to fly the plane. He soon discovered that any idiot can get a plane off the ground. But landing it is a lot harder. He hit the ground a 100 feet short of the runway. The result was he lost his legs below the knees and lost an eye from the ensuing crash.

The concept is to fly about 5' above the runway, still having good RPMs on the engine in case you need to flog it for a go around its not loaded up and could possibly die. Once you feel good about the landing ease back the throttle and set it down.

You did good now DON'T GET TO OVER CONFIDENT, and remember there are two things that keep airplanes flying MONEY and AIRSPEED DON'T SCRIMP on EATHER ONE! Back in the late 80's I had a Croba ultralight that I had acquired from one of the guys at the flight school on the Kissimmee Florida airport, it had been disassembled and I had to put it back togather. I already had my single engine land pilot's certificate but had never befor flown an airplane with a stick. My dad said after you fly with a stick you will love flying with a stick and he was right I did. I first flew the Corba at a small grass strip called BIG SKY on HWY 192 inbeetwin Kissimmee and St. Cloud Florida, I did the same thing you did, I would hop it off the ground and fly a couple of hundred feet in ground affect land and go back and do it OVER again until I felt that I had a good feel for the airplane then I flew it around the field for a couple of hours getting better acquainted with it to determine if it had any bad habits, it had none it was a very nice flying airplane. The only issue that I had was that ALL OF THE wing wires were conected to a single stainless steel D-ring with a single 1/4 inch bolt holding the D-ring to the frame of the airplane. I know the D-ring was adequate but it still gave me the heebeegies while flying it, at first it was creepy looking down between your feet and legs and seeing nothing beneath them and the ground but AIR, LOTS OF AIR!

You kinda have to treat this as a ME-262 german jet fighter. There was 2 STRICT throttle settings for the ME-262,,,idle or cruise speed. If you played with the throttle levers trying to vary the engine speed, the german jet would flame out. Quicksilver throttle = idle or cruise speed. Your friend almost tip-stalled it due to really low speed turn. Ultralight are a bit more forgiving, but be ready, they have a limit.

Just my opinion and suggestion.

Am i the only one who noticed this guy doesn’t have a helmet on. I know this happened a while ago so who knows if this genius is even still alive to see this.

Check with your utility to see if they can put some orange balls on those wires at end of runway, unless you make a habit of flying under em.

I can’t say I was comfortable watching him at that altitude and attitude but he was able to save it so I guess that’s good. 👍

It loves to fly slow.. but you sure don't want to make a steep turn when you are low and slow. eeesh that was pretty risky when he cut the throttle during that turn.
