So, at 9:10 when you use the example of wanting to block in God of War, that's an unblockable attack. The game tells you the attack will be unblockable with the yellow circles that come from the enemy before the actual attack. So the reason your block isn't working is because the attack is unblockable, and needs to be either dodged or parried.

The Daigo parry (the street fighter one where crowd starts going nuts) is considered the most clutch moment in competitive gaming. Not only did he perfectly parry a large string of attacks with extremely tight time windows, he also countered afterwards. To make it even more nuts, he did this on visual cues alone, not being able to hear the attack sounds that he's used to needing to hear, due to the crowd cheering so loudly

As others have said. The God of War clip wasn't you parrying. You tried blocking a heavy attack, which leaves you open for a second. If an enemy attacks you, and you press block a split second before impact, then you parried the attack. That will leave the enemy open instead of you.

In God of War: You can block normal attacks all day If you see the enemy's attack is preceded by a yellow circle, the game is telling you it is a really strong attack which you can: 1. try to normal block it---but since the attack is strong it will stagger you and make you susceptible to follow up attacks. 2. Parry it--which will instead stagger your enemy for a short amount of time, giving you a window to land a few attacks. 3. try to avoid/dodge/ run away If you see the enemy's attack is preceded by a red circle: -- run. Run. Ricky RUUUUUUUN cuz you ain't gonna block that -ish.

For a lot of games, including God of War, holding down the block opens you up for a guard break from strong enemies, where they'll use an attack that's strong enough to swipe your shield away, leaving you open for another attack. Those types of attacks are usually best dodged or parried. For Dark Souls, guard breaks usually happen when the next attack that hits you does more stamina damage than what you have left, leaving you open to take even more damage. It's the same for Sekiro as well, where if you're having difficulty timing your parries, you take more posture damage, the same amount you would when you block, which makes it easy for enemies to eventually break your posture and almost certainly kill you.

You can't just use your shield against the Valkyries. Your sheild is open because she hits 2 times. If you do not time the parry the first hit, she will bash your shield away leaving you open to her second hit. But you are gettign quite good at parries. Just need to get the timing down for that specific enemy and also start attacking more after a successful parry and you are good to go. The Valkyries are hard enemies and they expect you to have full control of the combat mechanics when you fight them (that first one is the easiest one to kill but still hard).

Right. I don't blame her for being a new gamer. Her progress is absolutely incredible. She beat Doom, which is incredible. But I do find it amusing/frustrating in equal measure that she is calling it a bad/poor mechanic when its simply a failure of her to understand the mechanic. Again though, we've all been where she is, so im not judging too harshly. And ultimately, its valid for people of all veteran levels to like or dislike God of War (Dad of Boi). Just wanted it known that its a failure of her to capitalize on the counter strike/parry mechanic and not a failure of the game mechanics.

So, video games does have something sort of similar to that momentum shift you described in a baseball timeout - fighting game players will sometimes go back to the character select screen between sets in order to calm down and reset. Often this will be done without actually picking a new character, and sometimes it is done to switch up with a new character with a new playstyle.

Ok so a few people have brought up this subject already but I want to re-iterate on it just to increase the chances of @HannaHsOverInvested to acknowledge it. God of war (2018) has this gameplay mechanic in wich the attacks from enemies are categorized in 3 groups: 1) Blockable 2) Unblockable but parryable 3) Unblockable and unparryable. All attacks wich's animation is acompanied by a yellow circle-like spark belong to the 2) group, meaning that to avoid getting hit by it, you must either dodge it or parry it (and in this context, parrying just means to press the shield block button just as the attack is about to hit you). All attacks wich's animation is acompanied by a red circle-like spark belong to the 3) group, meaning that to avoid getting hit by it you can only dodge. I really hope this helps you Hannah to better understand the game's mechanichs and reduce your frustation against it.

In GoW, red enemy attacks are unblockable and will completely ignore your shield, and the yellow ones (like the valkyrie example) will break your guard and knock your shield aside. So the issue is you need to dodge those ones and you can parry things that don't have either of those colors. I also completely understand not liking being bad at a thing but the good news here is that it was a misunderstanding and I think you'll be A-okay otherwise!

that ''HIT me baby one more time'' moment is a game mechanic that we in the FGC call it GUARD BREAK animation, you're staggered and vulnerable to her next attack... You used it several times on enemies without knowing...but those the small fries,they(some of them) can forgive you for doing that,so they never punished you for it.However the Valkyries are HIGH LEVEL Bosses that push you game mechanic knowledge to the limit...they will not let it slide. Solution: Easier: IF you did not master the Parry system to the best of your ability...dodge or Run,never block. Medium: IF you slightly master the Parry system to the best of your ability...never miss ANY of the first hits...its a double spin attack animation. Hard: IF you starting to master the Parry system to the best of your ability...DELICIOUS is the word indeed.

I always imagine in fantasy terms: in these world there are deities who are related to battle and conflicts, and if people don't call on them, they just lazying around, drinking wines and watching mortals fight, so when someone manage to successfully parry their opponents, the gods shout with the "boom" sound effects, and you get the time-dilation effect as your reward for putting on a good show for the gods. That's why you should always go for the parry. It's risky, yes, but mortals are meant to die, and if you lose, just try again next time in the game. AND if you parried the move, the world rewards you for that.

When you parry, Kratos pulls his shield-arm back and time slows a little for you to press R1, which makes him punch with the shield. For most enemies that hit-stuns them and prevents the follow up attacks that hit you. If you don't press R1 then youre stuck with Kratos waiting for that input as the enemy recovers and attacks again. Think of parrying and hitting back as one action, its not working because theres no full commitment to the mechanic, like aiming but not shooting. Also the startup frames for the parry are quite forgiving so its easy to accidentally get a parry from a block if youre slow or tend to doubt blocking so prss the teigger multille times. There are basically no instances where a block is more efficient than a parry, so this shouldn't be seen as a negative as long as you can get the muscle memory to hit back after a parry. The parry nevhanic in God Of War honestly trivialises so much of the combat when you get good with it because the risk/reward is skewed in your favour.

In God of War there are three different attacks requiring different responses to avoid damage, they are: Standard- (no flash)- can be blocked, parried, or dodged. Parry- (Yellow flash)- needs to be parried or dodged. Unblockable- (Red flash)- needs to be dodged. The punishments for not doing so are as follows: Standard- you take standard damage. Parry- you take hefty damage, if blocking you become stunned leaving you open for attack. Unblockable- you take massive damage where blocking and parrying won't help. With the enemies tracking (your movements) it makes dodging difficult. learning to parry what moves you can help with fights immensely.

Not sure how the concept of parry is hard to understand. As an author yourself dont your characters never parry a attack from the enemy with their swords for example? And also as some commentors have said games do use attacks by enemies which cant be blocked and have to be either dodged or parried. Usually the games give some hint that an unblockable attack is incoming like a red circle or something else to signify that you have to either dodge the attack (aka move out of the way of it) or use a parry (block it with your weapon). Parrying is generally harder to do in most games than blocking since parrying requires good timing while you can block a attack at almost any moment before the blow lands on you.

So, I know others have already mentioned *at length* why the parry/block wasn't working. But, to go to the heart of it, I think the biggest thing - the source of the symptom that is the failure to block in this instance - is simply the learning curve that is gaming literacy. "Heavy/unblockable attacks," "light hits," when to use said attacks and so on are all things that many of us have become accustomed to after years of games using similar mechanics to each other. It's totally understandable that these mechanics, if not fully understood, could frustrate a newcomer. It's like a batch of vocabulary/literary interaction in a new language that is more difficult to master than the rest of the language has been up to that point. Hence the moniker of "gaming *literacy*." I'm sure you'll get the hang of it in time (if you want to; it's obviously not a hard requirement). In the meantime, take a page from the Sith and use that rage to hone your skills!

So it sounds like (having not watched your GoW vids) your trying to block UNblockable attacks, meaning attacks that specifically are meant to break through them and punish you for trying. Such attacks are usually telegraphed by either a very long windup, or a glow effect to the enemy or their weapons and are meant to be parried or dodged.
@DonGeritch
@DonGeritch Жыл бұрын
gow doesn't have a parry mechanic exactly, but it has a perfect block mechanic. the difference is that you don't have a parry as a separete comand for your parry like in dark souls, where you press parry and you have a sort of wind up state, an active state, where the parry can successfully deflect the attack leavingenemy open for a counter, and a recovery state, where you're most vulnurable. the perfect block instead is just blocking right before being hit. like in gow you can hold block and stay on guard, and all the regular attacks will be blocked. if you do perfect block, meaning pressing block right before getting hit - you'll parry/deflect the attack, creating a big opening for a counter. if you press block too late - attack goes through, if too soon - you just do a regular block, like when on guard. you don't have any recovery to worry about with blocking. in gow enemies have regular attacks, guard breaking attacks, and unblockable attacks. - regular attacks can be dodged, blocked and parried. - with guard breaks it's best to parry them, these are the juciest parries you can get. if you take a guard break while being on guard (holding block or pressing it too soon for a perfect block) - your guard will be broken (duh). that's when Kratos' does that 'heart-presenting' move, because his shield was pushed aside by that attack. it's always safer to just dodge out of the guard break, but you miss out on the juciest opportunity to deal some damage. guard breaks are usually telegraphed by a winding-up move and a yellow halo around the enemy performing it. - unblockable attacks are mostly very telegraphed and have a red halo. those you have to dodge, or you can try hitting the enemy while they're winding it up. and that's I think mostly all you need to know about defending yourself in gow combat :)

Gunna be honest, its frustrating to watch you get frustrated and not actually learn anything from your mistakes. So hopefully this piece of advice can help: Think of it like Rock Paper Scissors, except you're cheating because you can see which they are about to choose before they throw it. Learn to recognize what an enemies Rocks, Papers, and Scissors look like, and learn what abilities you have that can beat them. Sometimes they will throw Rock, but their Rock punishes blocking. Sometimes they throw Paper, and their Paper punishes Dodging. Learn to accept that maybe you cannot Block their Rock, but maybe you can dodge it, or maybe you can parry it. OR maybe you need to be a certain distance away, or even be close to them. Either way, bosses and enemies are usually programed to have some kind of tell or wind up they do that tells you "I'M ABOUT TO THROW ROCK. ITS THE ONE YOU CAN'T BLOCK". Its... sorta like a puzzle game in this way. Which one of your tools matches up to their bullshit? Blocking against the flying attack opens me up. That means against the flying attack, I can't block, but instead I have to ___... Your job is to learn which one of your tools fills that blank in. The same can be said of a lot of these difficult games. If it doesn't work, change up the strategy. Press a different button. "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results” - Albert Einstein Also, "You waste more time trying to save time" - Unknown (unknown to me at least) When someone hates a game or even just dislikes a game, they never really want to learn how to play the game beyond it's controls, and they end up trying to beat the game as fast as possible, and thereby getting beaten by the game. If you don't like God Of War, just stop playing it. You'll never get good at something if you don't enjoy it, because you'll be too busy wishing it was over instead of enjoying the journey to greatness.

CSGO lets you call time outs, but i dont know of any other games that do. You can definitely get the enemy team "out of the zone" by calling a time out, but theyre long enough that most players dont ever vote for timeouts because they just want to play. Timeouts are basically reserved for when the best player on your team needs to take a dump

The key to getting better at parrying is to control your breathing and stop worrying about dying and progressing in the game. Just look at it as a puzzle. I need to know when the pretty pictures want me to press the button. Once you do that. You will also enjoy parrying and your chance of heart attack will go down.

Shielding in games is commonly the easy attack blocking. If the enemy is using a heavy attack or multiple attacks, those will destroy the fundamental use of a basic block. In nerd words, a "block-break" To counter a block-breaking attack is to parry it. And there are of course some attacks that are unparriable and can only be dodged. Blocking in games is the bare bones of defense and the weaker way of defense, so for more complex attacks, parry or dodge.

I'm kinda surprised that you're starting your gaming journey with God of War 2018 of all games. Don't get me wrong, it's a soft-reboot for the franchise, but being the eighth mainline game in the series, the game's main target market demographic was the pre-established God of War fanbase, meaning that the devs expect the player to have some sort of familiarity with action games. It's a VERY punishing game for a newbie gamer, so I can somewhat see your pain, lol. Your problem with your God of War clip was that you were trying to block an unblockable attack. Which is more on the fault of your gaps in game knowledge than your inability to parry. But the fact that you're trying to understand why you failed is a great step. You're learning step by step, and trial and error is one of the best teachers there is.

Hey, Hannah. Still watching the video, but I wanted to comment. By the time you read this, you may (or may not) already have parrying down. So, just indulge me: In your God of War: Ragnarok clip fighting the Valkyrie, I ran by it a few times and it almost seems like Kratos was in a staggered position, not a position to counter-attack. This usually means you blocked an attack that cannot be blocked, and therefore it was basically you who got reverse-parried (by powering through your block stance) and was open for a counter-attack from the boss. If you look at all the clips that Daryl shows about a successful parry, take note that it's the monsters and bosses who are in that 'stab me in the heart' position that you described Kratos being in. That is the visual tell for a successful parry. Sometimes the game will have some kind of flash, or audible cue that a parry was successful. In any case, it is most certainly a matter of timing and skill, not necessarily luck. The only aspect of luck involved is that you're gambling that you'll time the parry right and succeed in opening up the boss-and that's usually in a do or die situation in the game. A do or die situation being that you have no restoratives to fall back on, for example. Or your super mode is on cooldown and can't be used at that moment when it would be the most helpful, or you can only dodge, but it's too slow between dodging and attacking, so the boss is already gone or attacking by the time you recover. In which case, only parrying is feasible. I'd say work on it, and pay closer attention to the visual and audio cues. If you're the one that looks like they're open to attack, that's your block getting cracked open. If it's the boss in that position or similar, your parry worked. Best of luck on your further gaming adventures

I played the dad of war games without using the parry mechanic at all. And same for most games that have it. It’s best to not take the gamble most of the time and just hold block while biding your time and chipping away at tougher enemies

Hate to break it to you but the reason parrying in god of war is so unforgiving when you miss is because it’s generally considered to be a very easy parry mechanic, also it looks like you’re trying to block unblockable attacks which is why his shield goes flying, those attack have to be dodged or parried

So about things like "timeouts" in videogames; this actually does happen! Games like overwatch, Starcraft, League of Legends, etc.. when played competitively let players or teams call for "pause breaks" which will literally freeze the game until everyone is ready. Its still different from traditional sports since the game doesn't reset after the timeout, but rather resumes from exactly where it stops but it can be used for a similar reason i.e. to stop the opponents momentum. However, another difference from traditional sports is that a pause needs to have a reason for being called or its consider bad manners. like if a controller stops working, or the game is lagging unreasonably, or other competitive disadvantage. just calling a timeout to screw with your opponents psychology is heavily frowned upon in most videogames, which is very strange when you compare it to say basketball.

In god of war strong attacks cant be blocked. Red flash atks must be dodged and yellow flashes must be perfect parried/dodged or you will get wrecked.

Yes, you're going into block stun in GOW. The game is punishing you for how you're playing in order to discourage you from playing that way. You're trying to stay hidden behind your block (this is known as turtle-ing), which is generally not that fun a way to play. A lot of games thus try to discourage it because of that. GOW is doing this exact thing by including an unblockable attack in the valk's move set (indicated by that yellow circle displayed). The game is trying to drive you to try other, higher skilled and more engaging options. "Find the fun zone" is the game design mentality behind this. In order to fight that unblockable attack specifically, you'll need to sidestep or time a perfect parry. Good luck :)

What you are seeing isn’t you trying to parry it’s your guard being broken and leaving you exposed. Yellow attacks can be broken by parrying and red just dodge.

That bit about calling a timeout in basketball was really cool! It absolutely happens if you’re playing by yourself, I dunno how many times I’ve gotten stuck on a boss, googled “X game is BS” and come back 5-10 minutes later and beat it. The tilt meter is real.

One day, play the original trilogy, I bet you will be more satisfied with his response time. Ps: My dad while playing God of War after had played Red Dead 2, makes the same remarks to me, "why can't I get over this?" and I always say the same to him..."This is not Red Dead" but what I'm basically saying is that this game is about challenges and not about freedom.
@sainttoadenbomb3591

I have to agree with some other comments, it looks like you are getting guard broke not failing a parry. If you are holding the block button you aren't parrying you are getting guard broken. If you see a yellow flash as the enemy attacks you can parry or dodge but blocks will be broken leaving you open, if the attack has a red flash the attack can't be parried or blocked and dodging is the way to go. It's possible you are getting to excited and accidentally tapping the block button when you mean to hold it, no shame it happens. I've played video games for thirty years and I had to avoid taking the shield bash skill because I kept doubling tapping when I ment to parry and just got hit while shield bashing instead. I haven't watched your stream so I have to assume someone told you but in case they haven't, the Valkyrie fights are the hardest in the game and completely optional. You will have to fight through some of the hardest challenges in the game to find a couple of the Valkyries and you have to defeat all eight of them to fight the Valkyrie queen. If you do want to fight them you can totally do it. It will take practice and frustration but you got this. You are awesome and I believe in you.
